Well since Apocalypse Now is influenced by Heart of Darkness and not a direct retelling, I will mention a couple of other book/movie combos in a similar spirit.

Kurosawa's film Ran is based on Lear; Throne of Blood is a retelling of MacBeth.

The Coen brothers based O Brother, Where Art Thou? on the Odyssey.

My favorite musical version of a play is Kiss Me Kate (a retelling of Taming of the Shrew) which one can see on stage or as a film. This may not be on topic with the OP's request, but I look for reasons to quote the following:

The girls today in society

Go for classical poetry,

So to win their hearts one must quote with ease

Aeschylus and Euripides.

But the poet of them all

Who will start 'em simply ravin'

Is the poet people call

The bard of Stratford-on-Avon.

Brush up your Shakespeare,

Start quoting him now.

Brush up your Shakespeare

And the women you will wow.

Just declaim a few lines from "Othella"

And they think you're a heckuva fella.

If your blonde won't respond when you flatter 'er

Tell her what Tony told Cleopaterer,

And if still, to be shocked, she pretends well,

Just remind her that "All's Well That Ends Well."

Brush up your Shakespeare

And they'll all kowtow.

A favorite from my childhood: Emma and Clueless

Now I have to watch Clueless!

It's worth noting that neither of the Coens had ever read The Odyssey when they made O Brother (at least that's what they claim). The movie is very loosely based on what they knew of the story.

How weird! On the other hand, contrary to my expectations director Walter Hill really was reading Xenophon while directing The Warriors. Apparently he wanted Orson Welles to do a narrated introduction tying in Greek themes, but the studio refused.

The Painted Veil
