Denise in Florida
Just read a fascinating article about the discovery of a new family of spiders. Warning: link contains a large picture of the spider. http://news.yahoo.com/family-spiders-found-oregon-cave-195539171.html Good example of science as they find the spider, discover what it is not and then identify what it is ... a entire new family. ETA: adding a quote from the article: "They make a little web, but hang under this web. They hang some of their legs out in space. This is all in the dark in a cave. We think the legs are stretched out waiting for something to come by, like a fly, and when it hits the legs, the claws may just snap shut." Denise in Florida
I think it is fascinating that regular people are still discovering new things in the world. Most of the stuff that is 'discovered' seems to require space technology or million dollar equipment. This is just scientists in a cave. It feels accessible and real.
