Which audio version of The Hobbit?

Recommended Posts

I won't be helpful. DH read the full thing to my DD's last winter when they were 5 & 7. They loved it. But then we bought the dramatized abridged audio. DDs listen to it over and over and over. They love it. It certainly holds their attention. I do think the full book should be read at some point. So really it's down to whether you think you need the extra drama to keep them interested. Sorry I'm not more help.

We love this one. It is on You Tube because it went OOP. The reader, Nicol Williams, put it up because so many people loved it. He died last January.

This is his site with the original links:

Now that he has died his son is maintaining the site. I am not sure how long he will do that. There used to be an active torrent link and I was able to put it in my iTunes, but that link is dead.

edited to add: this is a single reader version. My kids prefer that type of audio version of all books. They don't like it when there are different speakers unless it is something that was originally written as a play.

Williams did such a superb job that I'm not sure if any other reading can come close. It's free and I downloaded it to our iPod last year from youtube. Dd listened to it for months and still does on occasion.

I think I spent an inordinate amount of time finding an audio only mp3 version, and I finally did, but I forgot where...

Eta From one of these maybe?

Kayray is currently reading this, I guess for librivox, but also on her podcast, in case anyone wants another free version.

I love the Hobbit. One of my favorite childhood memories is having it read to us at summer camp, after lights out, by an Episcopal nun.

On his site, that is now maintained by his son, there used to be a link to a torrent site with am Mp3. It went right into my itunes.

It is so good, that I consider it one of my treasures.

It really is too bad it's not in print. He did a marvelous job.

If you google "hobbit Nicole Williamson Mp3" you do get a bunch of hits.

He made them freely available because there was no interest in reissuing them. He wanted them to be enjoyed. They have been up on his site for years.

The link is still there and it works.

I checked it when I posted the site and it didn't work! there must be more than one link and I had the bad one, maybe?

Anyway, that is great news!

You are very welcome, we just love it.

Sorry, I didn't see this until now, but it looks like there are mp3 files linked above, which I didn't know about in 2010.

What I did was use RealPlayer to convert YouTube recordings to mp3. I do that with Adventures in Odyssey as well since I'm not fond of streaming online for DD.

Do you have to reset it each time you listen (as in, you get half way through one, stop, do you have to remember what "time" you were at and drag the bar over the next time you listen?) <- How's that for "tech speak" ;)

Well, those files appear under videos on the iPod, but I believe if you use pp's links for mp3s, then the book would appear under a different category, in which the resume button may be available. If the book is caegorized under audiobooks on your iPod, then for sure there is a resume button. I don't have the iPod with me to test it, but I don't think video files have a resume option.
