good small gift ideas for boys ages 5-9?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for any ideas under $10 for my nephews for Christmas. I usually get them a couple of books and then one or two little fun things. They are getting older and I'm less aware of what this age range likes for the fun stuff.

Thanks!

My son just got a hand-buzzer which he loves (from Amazon) for about $3.00. He also got fake poop, but I'm sure you don't want that. He loves practical jokes. He got some of the fake gum from Five and Below once.

I just saw something on Amazon that might be good. My 7yo grandson loves to make paper airplanes. On Amazon ( please someone, teach me how to link!) there is a book that has the airplanes printed on the pages. You take out the page and follow the instructions for folding them correctly. It comes with stickers to decorate and is under $10. I put it in my cart for my grandson's b-day in September.

My son loves those. They are now making Hero Factory. Loves those too.

These are the ones my oldest son likes. He, and my younger son, have a hard time with the fine motor needed for the teeny tiny legos. He also likes being able to mix and match the body parts.

Now, all my kids love the mini figs from Lego. We often buy the mystery packs and even bought one elusive one off eBay ;)

Pocketknives - All I'll say is know the child you are giving it to VERY well. My stepdad was convinced that "all boys need pocket knives" and so my oldest son got one about 5 or 6. It was a tiny little knife. He was in my mom's back yard, trying to cut a twig off a stump, and made a spiral slice all the way around a finger. He did NOT need a knife, an argument I made before the appearance of the knife, and I threw it away. I have known other kids who were FINE with them. I would probably clear that with the parent and be VERY sure that I'd seen a child safely use a knife before.

Other things my boys like -

Making tents - a box of old or mismatched sheets/blankets can be a lot of fun. I also saw these cute little pop out A-frame style ones on Pinterest. I've thought about making them for mine as gifts.

Playmobil - the people mostly. I don't buy big sets.

Imaginext - for my youngest it's the people and vehicles. He doesn't like things like dinosaurs (which my oldest loved :() or fantasy stuff like the DC comic themed ones.

Razor Scooters and Skateboards - you can sometimes get deals on the scooters, and the boards are like $9.99 at Walmart.

Kit/Instructional gifts - Klutz books or things like book of yoyo tricks and a cool yoyo.

Cute science kits - the "grosser" the better!

Water beads - these are cheap and easy to use. Just buy packets of floral beads in the craft section at Walmart - $2! They come in a rainbow of colors and we love to bounce them, squish them, experiment with them (will they grow in coke?), slice them with plastic knives, etc.. Even my 13 year old thinks they are fun, not that he says it aloud...

DUCT TAPE? I know my DD is planning to use some of her bday money to buy Duct Tape. It's HUGE with girls around here, but I've seen a few boys using it. I'm trying to convince my oldest to make a hammock :D My youngest son wants some just because DD has some.

Paintable models. Could be planes or cars, but my kids like animals. I've seen inexensive kits.

Weird pens and pencils. If it has a goofy topper, smells funny, lights up... they are interested.

Gum/candy baskets if they are allowed gum and/or candy. Before I took mine off sugar, one year I gave them a dvd with a movie theater size box of their favorite candy in their stockings. HUGE HIT!

Cool slippers. My kid love robes and slippers.

Well, for little boys, you can give them something they can play with but not that dangerous. Like Fisher-Price products. Choose a toy that would be appropriate for their age. There are a lot of best little boy gifts around the web.
