Chris in VA
I'm thinking of trying to get a local group of maybe 5 kids together who want to learn French. The class would meet once a week, do most of the work at home, and use the Galore Park materials. I would charge 8-10 dollars a class, and hire a df who speaks fluent French and is very good with kids. So, the class would cost around $300 and meet about 30 weeks. Plus cost of materials that they'd order. What do you think?
thescrappyhomeschooler
It's something I would consider as a parent if my kids were interested.
tmulcahy
$300 for a high school foreign language yes, for middle school no. I know it is only $10 per class, but it is just not something we would do. I know others who would:001_smile:

acablue
If my kids were that age, I think it would be perfect.
Melinda in VT
Caveat--my kids are in ps but we do pay for Spanish lessons for my 6yo. The price seems reasonable, but I would prefer a native speaker teaching it. DH would have to vet them for accent. :-D
Susan in TN
In our area, that would be a great deal for a year of French tutorial.
WishboneDawn
In a heartbeat. :iagree: French has been a huge frustration for us
Laurie4b
For a good foreign language class in a language we were interested in, yes. French isn't one of the languages we're interested in in our family though.

MariannNOVA
Yes - in a flash. Please pm me if you are going to move forward. I would sign up the twins. I also have tons of space if you are crunched for a place to do this - but i doubt that you are.
Tasia
If I didn't speak French, that's exactly what I would want for my oldest. We're going to be doing Galore Park at home this year.
Chris in VA
Thanks so much! Now to pitch the idea to my df....;) Do you think offering her $30 an hour is enough? It's low for this area. I would offer her more if we can get about 5 kids--I'd give her all the $, of course, but I don't know how many would come, so I wouldn't want to offer her something I can't promise. (But knowing Mariann's kids might participate is a huge plus! :D)

Rebel Yell
I would only do it if it was for a full high-school credit. I wouldn't do a high-school credit class for a child younger than 9th grade, though.
regentrude
Yes. We have wrestled with French for several years and ended up hiring a private tutor - compared to that, your class would be a steal. I would prefer the teacher to be a native speaker, but somebody who is really actually fluent would be fine. (I am emphasizing this point because I have seen very different claims of "fluency".) Price depends on the area. We paid out tutor $30 per lesson. ETA: I would be happy to start with a middle schooler, because four years of high school are not enough time to develop actual fluency in a foreign language. Canadianmumof5
We do have a french language school in our area that offers classes for elementary kids; the classes are 2 hours per week (1 session) and go for 18 weeks at a cost of $420 per student. Class size is 5-12 kids.
catz
We do something similar for Spanish here and the price point is similar too. It's been great! We round out the Spanish class with Rosetta and written homework. It's best if you can find a native speaker.
