Can I put a whole chicken in the crock pot?

If so, do I need to add liquid like chicken broth?

 

What if I just added curry spice and onions?

 

Any thoughts for a lazy, hopeless cook?

Yes, and your plan sounds wonderful. I would place the onions on the bottom and the chicken on top. No liquid needed--plenty will come out of the chicken.

I always add some broth, or water if i am out of broth. Not sure if it must be done.

Yes, you can. :001_smile: I put a little bit of water in the bottom just so it doesn't stick or burn on the bottom and if I want them I add potatoes and onions or whatever else I want and then put the chicken on top.

I do it all the time. I usually break up a couple carrots and celery stalks to put on the bottom and rub the chicken with Italian dressing or olive oil and spices.

I do! I usually ball up aluminum foil on the bottom of the crock and set the chicken on top of that. I add a little liquid, spice her up and she is good to go!

I like the idea of onions under the chicken! I always crinkle some foil to place on the bottom, pour a little olive oil over the chicken and sprinkle with seasoned salt. Very easy and yummy!

I do it all the time w/ no liquid at all, just rub it with spices. In the crockpot it is better to remove the skin though as it gets mushy, that helps the flavor get into the meat as well.

maybe half a cup of liquid to get it started - a lot more will seep out of the bird as it cooks! Make sure to take out any bag of guts, etc. first, too.

Since I had some broth, I put in a small amount. Then I put chopped onions, celery, and carrots on the bottom. Lastly, the chicken rubbed and topped with Italian dressing. I'm hoping for the best! :)

My mil says the skin will get crispy just like in the oven if you do no liquid. I have not tried it but I want to.

:iagree: I've tried it by keeping the skin on, it does not get crispy at all. I never add liquid to a whole chicken.

Yep, I do it all the time! One of the easiest ways to make dinner. Just throw the chicken in, season it, and let it cook on low all day long.

 

Or, you can chop up an onion, some potatoes, & carrots and put them in the bottom of the crock pot. Put chicken on top, season, add a little water or broth (to cover vegies) and cook on low all day. Hope you enjoy!

I never add liquid. It doesn't generally stick. I just throw the chicken in and put some spices on top and go. I'm lazy like that.

 

The skin does not get crispy though. No way.

I remove the skin, rub it with olive oil and spices inside and out, stick an onion in the center and leave it in there. No liquid. Put on high for three hours and then low for another two hours (not necessary but I like it falling off the bone)

:iagree: I was going to recommend this recipe, too! I usually make it with boneless, skinless chicken breasts. One day I will get the courage to try to cook a whole chicken. :)
