Dog food recalls -- high quality brands

Recommended Posts

If you feed your dogs any of these brands of dog food manufactured at Diamond Pet Foods, check the product code and best buy dates, because they have been recalled.

People are getting sick from handling the foods: http://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/dog-food-05-12/index.html

Solid Gold and NutraGold pet foods are also made at Diamond Pet Foods, according to Wikipedia, but they are not subject to the recall right at this minute: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_Pet_Foods

The Natural Balance link didn't work. I just bought this last night, since Solid Gold was giving him diarrhea.

The link works for me, so I don't know what the problem is.

Just Google Natural Balance Pet Foods. In the right hand column is a bright yellow box entitled Voluntary Recall Information. Click it. There is a long list of products.

States that are NOT affected by Natural Balance's recall include: Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

Dh just showed this to me this morning.

Weird thing is, I thought I had read way back when that *all* dog food could potentially cause salmonella in humans. My kids are always supposed to wash their hands after feeding the cats and dogs.

"Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian."

Not Diamond again. We lost 3 dogs 2004/2005 during their last recall.

I am so sorry to hear that. You must have been devastated.

This recall isn't for the sake of the dogs ... it is because people are getting sick, and their pets can be carriers even if the animals have no symptoms. Of course, dogs who do not have healthy immune systems are at risk, too.

"People who are more likely to get salmonellosis include infants, children younger than 5 years old, organ transplant patients, people with HIV/AIDS, and people receiving treatment for cancer." http://www.cdc.gov/healthypets/diseases/salmonellosis.htm

No deaths have been reported so far, but according to the CDC (link in original post) illnesses that occurred after April 1 might not have been reported to them yet because the process takes 2 to 3 weeks.

Until this morning, we fed Aidan Taste of the Wild. Now I'm thinking of making his dog food myself. I trust my kitchen and my cooking methods, mostly because no one has ever gotten sick from my food and because I clean my kitchen and prepare food in strict accordance with the CDC's recommendations.

Thank you. Ours isn't on the list. It must be new enough that they took care of the problem. My 18 mo old loves to eat whatever cat or dog food she can find. :ack2: So it's good to know it's ok!

I wouldn't want that to happen.... It's really not food that's safe for humans :(

I bought 2 bags of dog food in the last 4 years... I'm on my second of Wellness... Glad that's not on the list :( I usually feed raw....

Hope all the WTM Pets are ok! :)

(And sorry about the dogs that were lost before, due to bad dog food :()

Dog food is not safe for human consumption. The best way to prevent your baby from eating it is to leave the food down for a maximum of 20 minutes each time you feed your dog, and to keep your baby away from the food bowl during that time.

me neither as the link is dead?

The link worked just fine when I posted it, but Diamond has since set up a special website about the recall. Here is the new link: http://diamondpetrecall.com/diamond-expands-voluntary-recall/

I changed the links in my original post as soon as I found out about it.

For Kirkland food:

To determine if their pet food is recalled, consumers should check the production codes on the back of bags must have both a number “3” in the 10th digit and an “X” in the 11th digit. The best-before dates for the recalled brands listed are December 9, 2012 through January 31, 2013.

For questions, call Diamond Pet Foods via a toll free call at 1-866-918-8756, Monday through Sunday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. EST. Consumers may also go to a special website, http://www.diamondpetrecall.com, for more information.

So I have to assume the info in the OP is wrong.

In fact, since I posted the now-dead link, Diamond set up another website specific to the recall and killed the link I originally posted.

The new link is: http://diamondpetrecall.com/diamond-expands-voluntary-recall/

Instead of assuming I posted erroneous information about the recall, all you had to do was Google Diamond Pet Foods.

Never assume that I went to all that trouble to post extensive info on this large pet food recall, only to be wrong. Instead, Google Diamond Pet Foods.

Here's another site to check - she sends out emails, too, with the new information:

Well, we don't feed it to her! She doesn't really get to the dog food, since we measure and feed him and he eats it all. (he's fed in his crate. He's occasionally growled at the kids while eating, so we don't risk it) The cat food is a little tougher, since he (was) fed on demand. She thinks his bowl is her personal snack container. I've taken over feeding him and give him just what he'll eat right then, but things don't always go according to plan. And if he begs the kids instead of me, we'll see her carrying around the cat bowl a little later. She likes it so much that if she's nearby while he's eating she'll sit by his bowl and shoo him away. Which we, of course, don't let her do. Bu it was pretty funny watching the poor cat stand there wanting his food while she took over.

Eta- I thought pet food was supposed to be safe since so many kids do eat it. ??

I didn't think for one minute that you were feeding your baby meals of pet food! I just would not have let my children eat even a smidge of pet food if I could prevent it, no matter how high quality the food is.

Production standards of Pet Food vs. Human Food (this pdf is from The Honest Kitchen, a pet food manufacturer -- I don't have time to find totally unbiased sources)

So, what's up with Diamond, anyway? :glare:

Wasn't it that company last time too?

(I have two 50 lb. bags outside my garage, but the wind is blowing like crazy, and I just can't get up the gumption to go check right now.)

They make a lot of different brands.

I feed our GSD Taste of the Wild and did not even realize it was made by diamond.

Yes, what is up with Diamond? Our vet (and the local farm supply) recommended it. I was reluctant, due to the previous recall, but we've been using it for our dogs and cats for over 6 months with great results. I'm bummed out that there is an issue again :glare:.
