Skirt wearing families!!!

Recommended Posts

"LO" is little one.

Jen, where do you find skirts for you? I have the worst time finding anything reasonably priced!

For my dds, I have found a few skirts at Penney's - most are too short, but now and then they have ones that come to the knee or longer. There are a couple on this page that I would try for my dd.

I like some of those skirts.

I find mine at the Thrift Store (St Vincent De Paul). I go on Saturdays when they have their 1/2 off days. I would LOVE to make my own but i need to get my sewing machine fixed (needs tuned up and a new electrical cord). I have issues finding the girls longer skirts though. They are shorter than knee length and to me thats too short.

Today Im wearing a Khaki floor length skirt with a blue sleeveless top (not tank top) and blue flip flops. The girls are wearing basic dresses. :) All from the Thrift Store.

I second sewing when we can't find what we want at thrift stores. A-line skirts and tiered skirts are simple without a pattern. Michelle has a good site for how to measure. And there are some really easy skirt patterns you can buy. You can use one pattern and change it up a bit to get different looks. Sewing skirts for LO's is really easy and doesn't take much fabric. I have even taken apart a skirt I really liked and used it for a pattern to make my dd skirts.

I find most of mine at thrift stores. The broomstick styles tend to be the longest ones, and I prefer mid calf. Because I wear plus sizes, I get my basic denim skirts (my version of jeans;)) from the Woman Within catalog. I wear skirts exclusively (because I prefer the way I look in them vs. pants), but my daughter wears pants/shorts/etc most of the time now. She wore skirts more when she was younger. I did find a dress with what I considered a reasonable length at Cato's last fall for her, but we need to look for a summer dress now (plus she's taller, so that will make a difference).

I've seen some folks take skirts that are too short and add a tier or ruffle in either a coordinating or contrasting fabric to lengthen them, but that's not much easier than sewing an entire basic elastic waist skirt for a child. I've tried making a few skirts for myself, but am not sure what I'm doing wrong. They never seem to come out as I had envisioned them.

As to how many, I have two denim skirts, one black denim skirt, two multicolor printed cotton skirts, and two or three multicolor broomstick style skirts that I rotate through. I wouldn't mind a couple of additional denim ones since I wear them like most folks wear jeans and they do end up fading. I move the faded ones to be yard/work clothes (and don't count those in the list above). I tend to wear solid tshirts/knit tops with the prints and printed tshirts/knit tops with the multicolored ones.

Hmm. Apparently I'm the only one who buys new clothes here. I have four regular skirts and a couple formal ones, and then the same for maternity.

I like Junee's:http://www.junees.com/

modestclothes.com has a bunch of place.

I get dd's off of ebay usually. Some years The Children's Place has them.

Pricey, but heart-breakingly cute:

And:

Obviously the tops aren't modest...

This whole page is too cute:

What's the difference between a sleeveless top and a tank top. I have always used that as the definition of a tank top?

I make something similar to this:

http://www.rei.com/product/810699/horny-toad-chaka-skirt

for my older girls. My version is a bit swingier. One likes her skirts about 2" longer than the other. I can whip one up in about 30 minutes if the serger has the right color thread already on it.

Those are really cute but pricey. Did you just make your own pattern?

I just lay out a worn-out one on top and whack away! You inspired me and just made a striped one that I hadn't gotten to. I usually make them almost full circle, but as I was cutting this one the other-way-to (stripes to go vertical) I folded in the sides 9.5 inches.

One of the tricks I've found with LOTS of sewing for growing kids is to keep a sewing notebook. My children are not average-sized. They have really long arms and legs. So, it is helpful to know that I made a saddle seat outfit out of pattern # XXXX and added 12" to the length, 14" from hip to thigh, took out 2" in the hip and took up 3" out of the bust (yes, I have made just that alteration on a pattern). That allows me to look at a show shirt that fits one kid and know how to reproduce it.

This looks a lot like what I just made, only I ran the stripes the other way:

One of these days I'm going to do a double-layer skirt, with the top layer asymetrical. Unfortunately, our WONDERFUL fabric store has closed, leaving us without a place to purchase cotton knit. Joann's is terrible--it disentegrates and fades.

Thank you! I'm only a so-so sewer, but I have a friend who can *help*:D.

I really like these styles and I need some flattering still- losing-baby-weight skirts.

Have you bought from fabric.com? I wonder how their quality on cotton knit would be, they have some nice fabrics and decent prices.

Somebody PM'd me about our teen girls making skirts for them. Thank you! :001_smile:

Youre Welcome! I cant wait to hear back from you about it.

to me: A Tank top is like spaghetti straps or wife beater (are they actually called that? idk) thingy guys wear. A sleeveless top is exactly like a shirt but has no sleeves.

Sounds cute!!

Thrift stores in my area are reeaalllly lame. I guess I'll have to break out the sewing machine. I'm not much of a sewer but everyone's posts are very encouraging. :)

Thanks.

I have heard that some thrift stores mattering on area arent that great. Its a shame they arent universally good. :( we have St Vincent De Paul and if i go about 20mins away there is a Goodwill. I like both but the St Vincent seems to have a better selection on clothes. Now there is 1 thrift store down in Kentucky that has .50c Mondays but I havent been down there in awhile. I liked their selection when i did go.

The thing that bugs me is when they dont have the clothes organized by size! I dont want to have to look through a whole rack just to find my size. KWIM?

Our local fabric store has a variety of skirt fabrics. They are cute and already have the elastic....just measure the waist and sew up one side. They have dresses too. I add straps to those. We don't always wear skirts, can't really teach ballet in one ;) but DD would wear nothing but skirts if she could, but sometimes, laundry just does not get done :)

I realized that sounded snarky, not my intent, sorry. Where I grew up all of the above would be tank tops. :001_smile:
