Krista in LA
We were at VBS last night when I overheard dh talking to someone about Juneteenth. He had mentioned that he was on the phone with someone from NY who didn't know what it was. I interjected into his conversation that I had never heard of it until we moved to Louisiana. He gave me an odd look but kept talking. Next thing I know, he is trying to remember which Shakespeare play Juneteenth is from. I felt compelled to interject again and ask what the emancipation of slaves in Texas had to do with Shakespeare. Apparently he got the ides of March from Julius Caesar confused with Juneteenth.

G5052
The bad thing is that I could see myself making an error like that! Seriously, I am SOOOO history-challenged. DH is much more informed than I am. Yet another case of homeschooling making up for gaps in my own education...
Lolly
It just seems that my wires are getting crossed these days. I can say Juneteenth (which I have never heard of before btw) and think I have said Ides of March. The other day ds wanted to know what D Day was. I started talking about Pearl Harbor. Dh thought I was crazy. Maybe I was, I know what D Day is!!! Honestly.
Margo out of lurking
Consider the possibilities...I bet a lot of people wouldn't know that it has nothing to do with Shakespeare, and you could see how far this urban legend goes, lol. ;)
Storm Bay
So, just what is Juneteenth? I have lived in 4 states, 3 provinces & 1 European country, and while I have heard the term a couple of times have no idea what it is. I got the idea that it has something to do with the emancipation of slaves in this thread, but is it a certain date? What, exactly, happened on this date? I didn't have to learn it for my citizenship exam.

I didn't have to learn it for my citizenship exam. It is June 19th and commemorates the date June 19, 1865 when slaves were freed in Texas. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juneteenth http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/JJ/lkj1.html I had never heard of it before we moved to Louisiana despite the fact that is a state holiday or observance in 3/5 states I lived in prior to here. Kelli in TN
That is very funny. I bet my Illinois people don't know what it is either. I did not know until I moved to TN. Our city has a big Juneteenth celebration every year.
Night Elf
Maybe I shouldn't be homeschooling my kids then? I've never heard of Juneteenth! I grew up in Louisiana and Georgia.

Oh no, that's not what I'm saying. It wasn't because of not knowing what Juneteenth was, it was just funny because he was just so matter of fact about it being from Shakespeare. Like I said, I had never heard of Juneteenth before we moved here.

txbloobonnet
Wait! That sounds exactly like something a homeschooling father would get confused about! Thanks for the laugh. :)
Sahamamama
... when the local newspaper ran an article explaining it, and showing photos from a church's celebration of the event. I think it's great that we in America can celebrate freedom from slavery! Hopefully, someday, all the people in the world will be able to join in and be free from slavery. http://www.freetheslaves.net/NETCOMMUNITY/Page.aspx?pid=183&srcid=-

Big Buckin' Longhorn
That's hilarious! I'm a Texan, so we've grown up with this holiday. Turns out, my son guest posted on my blog regarding this very subject. http://twomomshomeschool.blogspot.com/2008/06/happy-juneteenth.html Enjoy!
