You have had lots of great suggestions so far so I'll just add a few.

The Albert Marrin books are great for rhetoric level, and I am enjoying the Hewitt American Tales reader. We aren't covering American history this year, but I am using this as a reader and nighttime read aloud for my younger girls. It has short biographical stories of American historical figures wrapped into a sweet little story of a family that loves history. Not great literature, but nice stories for grammar stage.

Build It Yourself series. For American history, that would be:

Great Colonial America Projects You Can Build Yourself!

Great Civil War Projects You Can Build Yourself

I've looked at many craft books because I love crafts. No matter how little my kids are, I don't want to spend time making something that we're just going to throw out or that I don't think is cool. I thought this series was the best series, these two books in particular were my favorite. (There is also a WWII book, but I don't remember loving it. I'll have to look again.)

For little guys: Fritz books.

For really little guys: there are early history readers by Step Into Reading (listed in the VP catalog). Nice.
