Jean in Wisc
I recall reading a story where men (in Russia?) crawled up in trees one evening and spent the night shooting something--wolves I think. There were piles and piles of them coming and coming and coming all night long. Does anyone know where this comes from? Thanks! Jean Edited December 27, 2011 by Jean in Wisc grammar.... Janice H
after he is rescued from the island. Shortly before or after the wolf incident there's bear-baiting by one of his companions. Lot's of guy-fun. I'm fuzzy on the details; dd and I read it six years ago.

I'll check on it, but I don't think this is it. I read RC after my kids were born and I'm quite sure the book I'm trying to find was something I read 30 years ago. That is why the old brain is so fuzzy. LOL! Thanks--I'll check it out. Edited December 28, 2011 by Jean in Wisc Added a title
Jane in NC
Could it have been Turgenev? A Sportsman's Notebook (also called A Hunter's Sketches) seems to have included something along these lines. Sebastian (a lady)
I recall reading a story where men (in Russia?) crawled up in trees one evening and spent the night shooting something--wolves I think. There were piles and piles of them coming and coming and coming all night long. Does anyone know where this comes from? Thanks! Jean To me it sounds like a scene in Lord of the Rings where the heroes had just escaped from orcs, only to be chased into trees by wargs (sentient wolfs). They were finally saved by eagles and taken to the King of the Eagles. I think this would have been in Fellowhip of the Ring.

MIch elle
In My Antonia is the story of the wolves during the wedding party. Not exactly what you describe.

They were finally saved by eagles and taken to the King of the Eagles. I think this would have been in Fellowhip of the Ring. This is what I thought of right away, too! Although they don't have guns, of course. I think it was in The Hobbit. It also rings a faint bell of something else ... if I think of it, I'll post! Laura in CA
Perhaps "The Wolves of Willoughby Chase," by Joan Aiken? Although I think (at least in one scene) they're in a stranded train, in the snow, and the men are shooting wolves from the train .... not trees ... I love that book. :001_smile:

Carol in Cal.
This sounds familiar, but I can't place it. Now it's going to bug me!
jhschool
There is a book by La Comtesse de Segur. It might be Les Vacances or maybe Les Petites Filles Modeles (but I don't remember). At some part of the book, all the children are telling stories and one of the children tells a story of some men in Russia and the wolves are coming, and there are huge amounts of wolves coming, and there is a garrison of men defending a fort or something. It is a very small number of men and hundreds of wolves outside. I read this years and years ago. It was definitely by Segur (the story I remember), but I don't remember which book.
