foxbridgeacademy
DS is 10 and we got him a loft bed. Considering my own near death experience with a bunk bed at 13 I've bee very cautious over this.
indigomama
Four, he's seven now and he's never had a problem. We have a triple bunk now, and he's on the top, with a rail, five year old on the middle bunk, 3 yo on the bottom.
Splinter
I've put several of my kids in top bunks at 4 and never had a problem. Right now my almost 5 year old and my 6 year old are on top, above 7 and 9 year olds.
MinivanMom
We just moved ds to the top bunk. He's 6.
Dustybug
We are purchasing bunk beds at the beginning of the year, and my DD who will be almost 6 will be sleeping on the top.
Sue in WI
Oldest ds was 6 when he started to sleep on the top bunk. Now the younger 2 ds take turns.
higginszoo
6, or almost 6. I had a serious accident in a top bunk when I was 3 or 4, that probably wouldn't have been an issue, had I been bigger.
twoxcell
My older two were 4 or 5. No issues here.;)
Myeightkiddies
If I recall correctly, they were around 8 or so. We don't use bunkbeds any more due to an accident that happened about nine years ago (one fell and busted a front tooth out of their mouth and needed to go to the emergency room), but many never have a problem with them. LMD
4, for his b'day. He loves it - no issues. Though the salesperson did tell DH that the legislation was for 7+ (I think?)
KristenR
4 years old for the top.
learningmama
6, but we have extra pillows on the edge to make Mama feel better!
anabelneri
Our Ikea bed has a huge warning on it that says that kids need to be 6, so that's our rule (it's nice to point to the warning and say "see? it says you have to be 6."). We do have additional rules about it. No more than one person on the top bunk at a time. And anyone sleeping up there has to sleep with their head away from the ladder. I used to be a camp counselor, and the scariest night was the one when I woke up out of bed catching a kid who was sliding out of their upper bunk headfirst, sound asleep. After that, all kids in my cabins slept with their feet towards the opening. They would still slide out of the opening, but they'd come out feet first which made a huge difference! :)
In the Rain
About 5 1/2, I think. She had a light in her bed that she could turn on so she wouldn't have to do the ladder in the dark. She is also a kid who never gets up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. My younger dd gets up at night, so we wouldn't have put her in one at that age. jennsmile
Well my older boys were in the normal range but sometimes my youngest sneaks up with brothers and he is less than 4.
ProudGrandma
for me it would depend on the the bunk...some have better, taller , safer railings than others.
thescrappyhomeschooler
Ds1 was almost 6 when we got the bunk beds. The rail is pretty high and he's never come close to falling out.
stripe
At what age did you allow your children to sleep on a top bunk? A month shy of 6 years. However, the younger sibling does crawl up there, too, but is very cautious. Apparently most accidents happen with kids less than 6 or over 18. I gave strict warnings about "horseplay" on bunk beds, and my kids have listened. There's also a giant, ominous sticker warning the same, in three languages. I haven't had anyone fall out of the top bunk, but there were two roll-outs from the bottom bunk before I returned a rail (separately installed plasticky sort). At the beginning, I did worry about going up and down in the night, but it never became much of an issue, esp once they got used to the ladder.
