Katiebug_1976
So...Amazon.com still says they are not released yet (and won't be until Jan. 16th). Does that mean if I order them through Amazon.com they won't ship them out until after Jan. 16th?

Dana
When will the TM be available from Amazon It is there - but it's nasty... you have to click on the options for the book (paperback/hardback). One is the student manual, one is the teachers' edition. :glare: Student book Teacher's book My student book is shipping, but the teacher's book won't be until next week. Katiebug_1976
I just got an email from Amazon that said Writing With Skill (both books) & The Creative Writer should arrive between Dec. 30 & Jan. 4th (much better than the earlier date of February 6-10!). I'm so excited! I can't wait to get them!
Mom2boys
Can I gently suggest that next time you order from Peace Hill Press instead of Amazon. You may pay a little more, but think of it as making a contribution to support these forums, from which we all benefit so much. :001_smile:
jeri
I bought the downloads since I have lots of kids who will use it! I must say that I am so impressed with this series! I finally feel like I have a "how to write" series that gives my kid scripted things to write about, clear directions, and help for me. I think my only con is that the writing samples she uses are a bit over my sixth grader's head as a number of them are from adult non-fiction books. but on the pro side of things, they give him excellent information on science and history, and we sometimes head down rabbit trails in those areas. (For example, today we looked at a Discovery channel snippet on hydrothermal vents, a topic about which he knew nothing.) Lov this set! jeri homeschooling a 9th, two 6th, and a 4th 8th and 5th in ps

I know that supporting them is always better, but this time it just came down to $$ (either buy from Amazon or not at all). We have a very tight budget, and this was not a scheduled purchase (I barely squeezed enough $$ together). So, I had to put my dc's education first this time. I hope I didn't offend anyone...if I did, it was not intended.
Osmosis Mom
I believe we should feel free to purchase where we want. It is not like PHP will loose money on an Amazon sale, is it? I needed two SM and one TM and think I saved close t o $20 by ordering from the most economical place.
Jim
Not long ago SWB offered a detailed insight into how the book business works. It's worth a read. At the end of the day dealing with Amazon has it's pluses and minuses. Yes, they cut into PHP's profit margin but they increase the volume of sales. Either way, PHP does enjoy a benefit. I was surprised to read her description. I've found booksellers to be mum on how the business works and I thought it said a lot about SWB that she willingly offered an insight. Both are/were extremely inexpensive and I feel like Susan does a LOT to help us all out (the forums, the YouTube videos, convention/workshop, etc) that buying directly from PHP is one small way we can pay it forward to them. JMHO. Obviously if there's a real financial issue then you need to do what you need to do. I'm just saying that with PHP curriculum, trying to get it as cheaply as possible is just not on our family's radar.

Dana
Do I need to purchase both the TM and the Workbook? Thanks! Yes. SWB talks about that and there was some discussion on the Logic board a while ago about it. You could search for her post on it... The student book is directed at the student. The TM has the student instructions but not the excerpts. It also has rubrics for grading and questions to ask the student.

Blue Ray
Hi all, happy 2012:001_smile: Can someone clarify what this book is? I see the free sample pdf on her web site. Is this book the same book? Thanks PS: The free pdf for Writing Skills, level 1 has been a gift. My budding writer is enjoying it.

Blue Ray
What age level are the books for? I don't to see any mention of this. Thanks. I may stand corrected, but I thought it was for anyone at a 5th grade writing level & up. My son is age 11.5 - he is enjoying both books thus far. However, he likes to write. :)

LisaDSB
Can anyone tell me whether the student book for Writing with Skill is consumable? Do I need a separate copy for each child? Thanks!
TC5
Can anyone tell me whether the student book for Writing with Skill is consumable? Do I need a separate copy for each child? Thanks! It doesn't have to be consumable. There are quite a few pages that ask the student to underline or circle words or write in the margins. For that, I'm kind of wishing I'd bought the PDF. Then I would have had my son read the lessons on the computer and would have printed those consumable pages. But, when I asked here, I was told there were very few pages with such instructions. I should have looked closely at the sample before buying the hardcopy. In the first 15 weeks of lessons (through page 208), I counted 33 pages the student is expect to write on, plus the appendixes, which should be pulled out and placed in the student's notebook. That's way too many pages to legally photocopy. I sometimes consider buying the PDF, too, as I intend to use this with all of my children. But so far, I have had my son do these parts orally, or he has written on other paper when possible. Either way, we are keeping the book clean for the four younger brothers. If you need just 2 copies, you might want 2 student books or one book and a PDF to print select pages. I'd go with the latter, as it's maybe a bit cheaper and seems so wasteful to write on so few pages of that wonderful book and ruin it for use by someone else! MomsintheGarden
I agree that there are too many pages that require writing, circling, underlining, etc., to be able to copy the softbound student book and resell it. I have 5 children to teach WWS, and ended up buying the softbound TM & SM, and the pdf SM. We use the books to read, and the pdf to read and to print out the workbook pages that we need. When we're done we'll sell the SM and TM because I'm guessing the program will be revised before my grandchildren could use it. :) Our 6th grader has almost finished WWS. He has been challenged by it, but I'm glad we stuck with it. GardenMom
