Meat mallet alternative?

I don't have one...what else could I use to pound my steaks?

How about a rolling pin? Put the meat in a thick plastic bag first.

I don't have a rolling pin, so I'd use a hammer turned sideways or a can of beans.

I wouldn't recommend this, just for the safety issue, but this is what I do: I take a glass tumbler from my cupboard (it has a heavy bottom), cover the meat with plastic wrap and pound with the bottom of the glass.

 

Disclaimer: Do not try this at home. I am not a professional and will probably cut my hand one of these days. I reeeaaally need to get a meat mallet.

the back side of a butcher knife works really, really well. Just be careful not to whack yourself with the front side as you hammer.

 

Also, go in one direction, turn the meat, go again, etc. until you get a criss-cross pattern.

I used a hammer with the meat inside of a plastic bag, but it did kind of tear the meat up a little. I think the rolling pin idea is a good one! I do plan on buying a meat tenderizer mallet though!

The back of the ultra heavy ice cream scoop... The meat stays in the bag, and you whack it!

I use my rolling pin and put the meat between sheets of wax paper.
