joannqn
I hate bugs. I'm not even all that fond of ladybugs. So, I wasn't all that happy to find this guy in my garage, though the homeschooler in me used our bug viewer to scoop him up...with chills running up my back. He's about an inch long, maybe a tad longer. Do you know what he is? Picture at my Facebook because I can never get photos big enough to get good details here. Kebo
I vote for earwig. That's a pretty big one, though!
Punchie
Looks like a heck of a big earwig.
Tree House Academy
Earwig was my first thought too...but it does seem awfully big.
Jeanne in MN
Earwig. I think it looks big because it's under a magnifying lid. He's harmless by the way. :)
Jean in Newcastle
Yup. He's an earwig.
joannqn
Yes, he's under a magnifier. I thought it would give better detail, but he's still an inch or more in length. And heck, yeah, he's harmless! He's dead. Breathed some alcohol fumes, he did. Still gives me the creeps though.

nd293
Sure he's not Made in China? (The bug-in-the-rice was my favourite thread of last year! It still makes me smile to think about it.)
jenn&charles
Looks like a potato bug?
Heather in AL
Why, oh why did I open this thread and look at that?!:ack2: I can't help with the I.D. but it sounds like the other ladies have it under control. My vote is "Made in China" (I, too, loved that thread, but don't know why I opened *that* one either!!) Why can't all bugs be made in China? Saille
I hate earwigs with a red-hot fiery passion, but I love: http://www.whatsthatbug.com/
jplain
Rove beetle? Oooh, yes! After looking at the pics I vote rove beetle. Google tells me that they're often mistaken for earwigs.
joannqn
Rove beetle ? Yes, it looks more like that. It doesn't have the back pincers like an earwig. Sure he's not Made in China? (The bug-in-the-rice was my favourite thread of last year! It still makes me smile to think about it.) Absolutely sure! Unless it has teeny, tiny batteries in it. He was pretty darn unhappy about being put in the container.
Teachin'Mine
If it doesn't have pinchers, which hurt like heck when they get you, it's not an earwig. It sure does look like them otherwise. Looks like you've found what it is. :)
joannqn
Thanks for your help. It looks exactly like a devil's coach horse beetle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocypus_olens
