Frosting a camoflage cake?

Is there any way for me to do DS' cake in camoflage? Suggestions wanted & very much appreciated.

I've made tank cakes, as well as some airplanes with a 2-tone color scheme. I just frost the whole thing one base color (green for camo) and then splotch on brown/dark green/black blobs and sort of smear them a bit. It looks fine, but of course, I'm no pro, LOL.

If you want to do fondant, use a base color, then put pieces of the other color(s) on top, roll it out until smooth, then put it on the cake.

I've done it using different colors of browns and greens and using a star tip on a decorating bag, so the whole cake was iced in small icing "stars", but in a camouflage pattern.

 

You could also try icing it in a base color, and then using brown, green, and black wilton spray icing colors.

I did the splotch method with vanilla icing colored camo green and tan and chocolate icing.

It is really forgiving. I used a doll skirt pan but a bowl would work, turned it upside down and had a mountain. It was frosted with camo colors and decorated with micro mini tanks and stuff. Have fun!

Here's my pic from last year. The frosting was a little fluffy, which is why is looks a little weird. But ds thought it was fabulous; he thinks I'm the best mom in the world, lol.

 

I made vanilla and chocolate frosting, and then blended the two for light brown, and tinted the rest of the vanilla green. I have a note that I should use dye paste in the future to make the green more vibrant.

I'd get a dark green and add black to part of it to darken it even more, then swirl the two colors together on the cake.....

I went to the store today and found black food color and green food color. But do you think I could find a camo green, a brown, or a tan? Did it occur to me that I could blend vanilla with chocolate or chocolate with green to come up with the other colors? Nope.

I'm definitely no pro, but I thank everyone for the suggestions! Thankfully he is a great 6yo boy and he'll just be happy if it's remotely camo looking! :D You have to love little boys!

Thanks, Chelle, for thinking of me to help with this! I agree with using the two colors of frosting and mixing small amounts to make "in-between" colors. That's probably what I'd do. I'd love to see pics when it's done - sounds cool! :)
