We discovered a beaver dam on our property!

Recommended Posts

We went out for a Christmas Eve hike yesterday, and discovered the coolest beaver dam on our property. We did not get close, because we did not want to disturb the beavers, but one of my boys even discovered a stick with the chew marks in it. From our vantage point, we could even see the remnants of the small trees they had chewed off for the construction of their dam.

A friend of mine told a story about the night her dog got into a fight with a beaver on her property. She talked about beavers as if they were some evil scourge visited upon man. I, rather innocently, piped up, "But,.....I thought that beavers were Nature's Architects?" (I swear that I heard that in some reel-to-reel film watched in an elementary classroom.) She looked at me like I had two heads. She hissed, "NO, THEY ARE NOT!! THEY ARE EVIL, VILE, DESTRUCTIVE CREATURES!"

I told her that they are cute and cuddly and "I don't appreciate your BeaverHate!" We have sinced agreed to disagree about....I'm sorry, but they just are.....Nature's Architects.

That is really neat! We can see a beaver dam right off of one of our main freeway bridges and I've always wanted to stop and look more closely. Of course this would cause a major accident, so we have to go flying on by. . . Maybe you could take some pictures with a telephoto lens!

I wish I had a telephoto lens! I may try to sneak down there tomorrow to get some close-up pictures.

She was from Oregon wasn't she?

The beaver hate from the beaver state surprises me too, lol.

Nope, Oklahoma. It is surprising how many people have BeaverHate stories. When she tells her Dog vs. Beaver tales she always has quite a few people saying, "Ohyeah, Civil Engineering keeps coming out and tearing out their dams only to have them rebuild!"
