kwickimom
I know I had a thread about this before asking for prayers. I am still not better and I am getting worried. Ok I have had what my doc says is bronchitis for 17 days. I have never had a cough. I have been to the doc twice, made 2 other phone calls to the nurse. I am not getting better. I have been through...a Zpac and Augmentin. I have been on a nebulizer for 2 weeks. I have been on Singulair and Advair. I technically have asthma although I havent had to use any meds for a year and I have ran most of the year, so my lungs were in tip top shape before all this. One xray they told me showed pneumonia...had one last week says no pneumonia or fluid. I am on round 2 of antibiotics. I am allergic to sulfa drugs, thus there are some meds she wants to give me but cant (and I havent a clue what they are didnt ask) I am on prednisone and the nebulizer 4 times a day. I am not wheezing, I just cannot get a full breath and my entire upper body hurts to the touch. My lungs hurt like heck and sometimes I get a sharp pain, but I constantly feel like a semi is parked on me. I am dead exhausted because I cannot breathe. Has anyone heard of bronchitis lasting this long? Should I try another doctor and see what they say? WWYD? I am usually pretty persistant with ongoing illinesses. I can hardly find any info on Google with Bronchitis without a cough. I cannot continue on like this and I am wondering if she is missing something. 17 days and I feel worse. Carol in Cal.
Antibiotics should work pretty fast. If not, then you might have the wrong ones. How long have you been on these current ones? If it's more than a couple of days and you are not improving, I would say that it's time for another trip to the doctor, just in case. Perry
Most cases of acute bronchitis in otherwise healthy people last only 2 to 3 weeks. But more than 20% of people with acute bronchitis have a cough that lasts more than 4 weeks.2 But if you don't have a cough, a diagnosis of bronchitis is unusual. And even if it is bronchitis, you should be getting better, not worse. There are other things that can cause shortness of breath and pain. I'd go back to your doctor tomorrow but if she doesn't order some tests, go somewhere else. Tomorrow.

She said she is not worried at all that I dont have a cough, because I have no fluid in my lungs, just inflammation which is uncommon but it happens. Generally, when the airways get inflammed they produce mucus, but mine are not. This new round of antibiotics...I am on Day 4. I saw her last Thursday (i think it was thursday) and she still says its bronchitis.

Although most physicians consider cough to be necessary to the diagnosis of acute bronchitis, they vary in additional requirements. Other signs and symptoms may include sputum production, dyspnea, wheezing, chest pain, fever, hoarseness, malaise, rhonchi, and rales.16 Each of these may be present in varying degrees or may be absent altogether. Sputum may be clear, white, yellow, green, or even tinged with blood. Peroxidase released by the leukocytes in sputum causes the color changes; hence, color alone should not be considered indicative of bacterial infection.17Since you aren't getting better, and you don't have the *hallmark* symptom of bronchitis, I think you need more tests to rule out other things. Sounds like your doctor doesn't want to do any more tests, so I'd go somewhere else. Good luck. :grouphug:
katilac
is this a gp? if so, I'd be on the phone with an ENT right away. i'm a big believer in specialists (plus just a fresh pair of eyes to look at the situation). We get bronchitis pretty often, and no, it has never lasted that long (the lingering tiredness, yes, that can take a while to get over, but not the actual 'sick' part). I've always felt noticeably better within days of starting meds and breathing treatments. I'm also allergic to sulfa meds, and it's never been an issue when treating bronchitis. Jean in Newcastle
This is exactly the kind of bronchitis I had - only my inflammation also became peri-carditis. It took a good 6 weeks for it to resolve. And some of my inflammation is still not resolved 2 months later. This is going around. A lot of people came into the ER with it when I was there. Both my ILs have had it. It is a nasty virus. I took a lot of natural anti-inflammatories along with the prescribed medicines. I took: Quercetin 1000 mg in the a.m. and 1000 mg. in the pm Omega 3-6-9 2000 mg in the a.m. Lung, Bronchial and Sinus Health by Natural Factors - 2 tablets a.m., 2 tablets p.m. PureDefense with NAC by Pure encapsulations - 2 capsules in the a.m., 2 capsules in the p.m. Meriva by Thorne (a form of curcumin) - 3 capsules in the a.m. and then 3 capsules in the pm. (I lowered this dose gradually as I got better).
Renee in NC
Reading your symptoms, my first thought was pneumonia. How does she know you have no fluid in your lungs, just inflammation? Have you had an x-ray done?

FairProspects
Yup, we had it too and it is wicked. Dh had bronchitis and I had an ear infection that blew out my ear drum from it. Everyone I knew who got it also got a secondary infection from it and one person who worked with my Mom actually died from the pneumonia (age 44). The doctor said it is an atypical virus in that it is very mild in the young and slamming young adults/middle age people. Are you sure you don't have pleurisy? That would explain the inflammation/chest pain. Be good to yourself - this is taking a long time to get over. My Mom still has pleurisy from it and has had it since before Thanksgiving. Jean in Newcastle
Didn't you have a cough, though? I did have a cough for part of the time. But then the cough went away but I still had inflammation in my bronchial tubes.

Lolly
One year, my dd has bronchitis for what seemed like forever. It went to pneumonia. It went back to bronchitis. I finally packed her up and took her to the Naples, FL for 2 weeks. Fortunately, that was far enough south for it to be warm enough to get in the ocean. She came home breathing fine. Any chance of a nice beach trip in a southern climate?
Catwoman
I would definitely see another doctor ASAP. I hope you start feeling better soon -- you need a doctor who will keep testing until he or she figures out what's wrong and is able to give you the correct medications. Harriet Vane
I would go see an ENT pronto. The meds should help at some level--if you are not getting better and still in this kind of pain they need to dig a little deeper.

kwickimom
well...I can breathe after the nebulizer (which I couldnt do yesterday) although all the pain is still there. I got an appt to see my actual doc on Monday. I can get in to see PA again tomorrow or thursday, although I am not sure that will get me anywhere. I am going out of town fri-sun for Chrsitmas, so I am just not sure if I should try the PA again, wait til Monday, or go to ER. Our ER sucks, so I would have to go to the one thats 40 mins away and it costs me $150 that I absolutely do not have. Of course if I get really bad I will just go, but I may try and hang in there.:confused::confused: I just dont know.
