Harriet Vane
I'm trying to decide on a dress coat for church and dress-up occasions. I was thinking of getting a down coat for warmth and being machine washable, but am struggling with whether or not that would be dressy enough. Can you lend me your fashion sense and take a look? The one I'm leaning towards, in black (warmest, decent $, long, machine washable): http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?upc_ID=29165281&ID=480425&Quantity=1&EXTRA_PARAMETER=BAG&PseudoCat=ba-xx-xx-xx.index Second choice (cheapest, dressiest, BUT dry clean only and not as warm): http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?upc_ID=29229924&ID=502394&Quantity=1&EXTRA_PARAMETER=BAG&PseudoCat=ba-xx-xx-xx.index Dh is strongly voting for the black down coat. Is it dressy enough? Thanks!
amydavis
The down coat seems to be the better value. Personally, I hate having to haul anything to the dry cleaner! I think it would be fine for church or parties, but I'm not sure how "formal" your formal occasions are (I hope that makes sense! :D). It would certainly work in my social circle for both church and parties. I like the length and the overall look of the down coat, also. And, it's on sale! :D
specialmama
I like both, but hey, do you have a Winners near you? You can get them cheaper than that. :D
Crimson Wife
It really depends on the norm for where you live. I wouldn't consider the former a dress coat but I tend to have a higher level of formality in dress than most folks out here in CA.
Old Dominion Heather
I like the second one. I am not a fan of down (on me) unless I am going sledding. But, I might change my mind if I had to go to lots of functions where I had to stand around outside or if I lived further north.

If you need it as an everyday "keep warm" coat, go with the down one, or choose a longer length wool or camel hair dress coat. The "dressier" coat that you showed us is very cute, but not too practical if you need something warm. FWIW, though, that down coat is about the most attractive down coat I've ever seen. It looks like it might actually be flattering to your figure -- which is rare with that kind of coat. It's also dressier than others I've seen, so if you need something lightweight and warm, go for it! Cat

JoyfulMama
Hmmmm . . . I really like the third one. (sigh) Another choice to add to the mix . . . ;) If *I* were to buy myself a dress coat, that would be the one. Classic, warm, not bulky. Worth it to dry clean it after each season. cjbeach
For dress in cold climates I always wore the 3rd coat Heather posted (minus the hood). Single or double breasted long black coat- I think that's pretty much the standard dress coat (with leather boots, leather gloves and a dress scarf). justamouse
If you're using it to trug about town and for just staying warm, then the down, but not for dress. Get a nice camel hair or wool for dress and the down for snowball fights.
elegantlion
I like the 3rd one Heather linked. I would go with the charcoal, shows less than black and would be classic for years to come. I don't think of down as dressy either.

Yes, I should have mentioned that my black coat shows EVERY little piece of lint, fuzz, and dog hair. Definitely consider the charcoal! LauraQ
I know a lot of people are saying that the down coat is not formal enough, but I'll add a couple of caveats to that. First, the puffy down coat look is very "in" right now (starting last winter, continuing to this winter) and it is considered more dressy than it once was *if* it has a more tailored cut, as the one you linked certainly does. Still, if you are going for truly "formal" as opposed to merely "dressy" then you may well go with the second. Here's a good way to tell. IF you expect to be able to wear the coat for a maximum of 3 or so occasions in the winter season, then you probably need something formal, and should go with the second. IF you expect to be able to wear the coat every Sunday to church, when going out on a dress-up date with dh, and for at least most (or possibly all) of your social parties this winter, then the down coat is plenty dressy for your needs. HTH.
