Fashion help--tell me which dress coat to buy

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to decide on a dress coat for church and dress-up occasions. I was thinking of getting a down coat for warmth and being machine washable, but am struggling with whether or not that would be dressy enough.

Can you lend me your fashion sense and take a look?

The one I'm leaning towards, in black (warmest, decent $, long, machine washable):

Second choice (cheapest, dressiest, BUT dry clean only and not as warm):

Dh is strongly voting for the black down coat. Is it dressy enough? Thanks!

The down coat seems to be the better value. Personally, I hate having to haul anything to the dry cleaner! I think it would be fine for church or parties, but I'm not sure how "formal" your formal occasions are (I hope that makes sense! :D). It would certainly work in my social circle for both church and parties. I like the length and the overall look of the down coat, also. And, it's on sale! :D

It really depends on the norm for where you live. I wouldn't consider the former a dress coat but I tend to have a higher level of formality in dress than most folks out here in CA.

:iagree:

Here in the NY metro area, I don't think most of us would consider any down coat to be a dress coat, but I think you should choose the coat that will serve you best. If you need it as an everyday "keep warm" coat, go with the down one, or choose a longer length wool or camel hair dress coat. The "dressier" coat that you showed us is very cute, but not too practical if you need something warm.

FWIW, though, that down coat is about the most attractive down coat I've ever seen. It looks like it might actually be flattering to your figure -- which is rare with that kind of coat. It's also dressier than others I've seen, so if you need something lightweight and warm, go for it!

I like this one the best:

Hmmmm . . . I really like the third one. (sigh) Another choice to add to the mix . . . ;)

I have a dress coat, but it's short. I'm only 5'2". The down one would go almost down to my ankles. That would be frumpy in the extreme on me. Mine is more like this.

I know a lot of people are saying that the down coat is not formal enough, but I'll add a couple of caveats to that. First, the puffy down coat look is very "in" right now (starting last winter, continuing to this winter) and it is considered more dressy than it once was *if* it has a more tailored cut, as the one you linked certainly does. Still, if you are going for truly "formal" as opposed to merely "dressy" then you may well go with the second. Here's a good way to tell. IF you expect to be able to wear the coat for a maximum of 3 or so occasions in the winter season, then you probably need something formal, and should go with the second. IF you expect to be able to wear the coat every Sunday to church, when going out on a dress-up date with dh, and for at least most (or possibly all) of your social parties this winter, then the down coat is plenty dressy for your needs. HTH.
