Suzannah
I like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Polder-898-90-Clock-Timer-Stopwatch/dp/B00004S4U7/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1269653920&sr=8-9 I can stick it on the fridge or wear it around my neck. It can count up or count down and the beep is loud enough to hear if I have to leave the room. Good luck!

Mom0012
I love the Time Timer http://www.google.com/products?q=time+timer&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-Address&oe=UTF-8&rlz=1I7GGLL_en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=5nOtS7WmG4L88AbRjL3cCw&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=3&ved=0CCkQrQQwAg because the kids can see exactly how much time they have left. creekmom
I bought each of my kids one of these timers this year. They use them for math drills, fluency tests, memory work, etc. I've been very happy with them. http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/seo/ca%7CsearchResults~~p%7C2534374302100491~~.jsp
FO4UR
I bought mine at Target. It goes up and down....and is magnetic. I use all 3 of those functions regularly.

Ravin
I'm planning on getting DD a watch/timer, the sports type. She can wear it around her neck, I can set an alarm on it to remind her when to come inside when she's playing up the street...and ideally it could also do a countdown so she'll stop asking things like, "how many hours until my swimming lesson?" every ten minutes for 9 or 10 hours. Finally, she likes doing timed lessons and I can often get more work out of her in certain subjects that way.
plain jane
Do you plan to use it a lot? Is your computer on during school time? I have my laptop on all the time so instead of buying a timer, I simply use a free online one. It works perfect for math speed drills or letting us know when our time is up in different subjects. This is the one I use. I like that I can use it to count up as well as down. Just thought I'd throw it out there as something to use until you find one you really love. :)
PeterPan
I use an Oxo timer I got at the hardware store of all places (Lowe's). They keep them in the kitchen section. It's just the bees' knees, with numbers so you can put in your specific time, etc.
