blackhead/comedone remover?

Recommended Posts

My 14yo has a LOT of blackheads and whiteheads. She's been smearing honey all over her face and letting it sit there for as long as she can stand before washing it off in the bathtub. That has cleared up a lot of the pimply stuff, but hasn't done anything for the blackhead/whitehead issues.

link to thread that got her started using honey:

Have any of y'all used a blackhead/comedone remover?

Here are some links:

Do these things actually work?

I never would have thought of using honey and that has helped a lot, so I thought y'all might know about this as well.

My skin care bible (Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me) tells me that something with high Alpha or Beta Hydroxy acid is the best thing to rid ones skin of black heads and clogged pores. I think whether to go with Alpha or Beta depended on your skin type from memory. I've got a Beta Hydroxy product for DS on my shopping list for when we have some spare $$, as it's not cheap.

The honey is working well here too. My dd just started using Biore pore strips today. I think it takes a few weeks before you see any results. I'll let you know if it works, but it might be awhile. :)

if you are looking for a mechanical removal tool:

http://www.amazon.com/Revlon-Blackhead-Remover-Pack-2/dp/B000HCZ34Y/ref=pd_sbs_hpc_3

The kind with the loop just cuts the skin.

I was just getting ready to post the same thing. This kind depresses the skin evenly around the blackhead and therefore pushes it out. It works very well and will only minorly damage the skin if used to aggressively. You can buy them almost anywhere: Walmart, drugstore, grocery store, anywhere that carries makeup and skin care products.

Beta Hydroxy is better for oily skin with acne and alpha hydroxy is better for dry skin with acne. I have found that the alpha hydroxy products by Alpha Hydrox company to be one of the better products out there and they have very reasonable prices. Unfotunately, they don't have a beta hydroxy product. Salicylic acid is beta hydroxy. You can find it in many products but it is hard to find the right strength and ph balance. You need 2%. Clear & Clear Maximum Strength Invisible Blemish Treatment is a good one although it is a little high in alcohol.

Paula Begoun aka the Cosmetic Cop is a good source of information on skin care. She has a website and several books which you can probably get at the library.

Being an esthetician , I have never heard of someone buying their own remover. That scares me.

You can take them to a skincare specialist and they should only charge 10.00 and do it once a mo. or every other week. Its called extractions. Dont let them hit you up for extras.

:iagree: So long as everyone uses the cleanser, the BHA & the benzoyl peroxide at the first hint of probs, there have been very few breakouts here. BHA and AHA both work for blackheads - it does take time as you're exfoliating inside pores.

But Paula Begoun aka the Cosmetics Cop herself did say that it's ok to squeeze GENTLY. That's what an esthetician does.

I had a friend who was a trained esthetician & I know what she did on me when she gave me facials & pore cleaning extractions. I can do it myself. Don't get carried away, don't dig your nails in there like a maniac but a gentle squeeze is fine. Scrub first - I like baking soda mixed with a bit of water to make a paste. That removes the dead skin cells and exposes the blackheads. Wash with a gentle cleanser & apply benzoyl peroxide afterwards. You must use a BHA or AHA product regularly or they'll come back fast. In certain parts of the face, they come back anyway but the BHA or AHA delays it.

I do not recommend squeezing whiteheads - that never seems to end well. With those you have to be patient & attack with BHA or AHA.

Biore strips take the top off and leave the problem behind. I've had a couple of dermatologists tell me to stay far, far away from them.

See a derm or an esthetician.

Thank you. I didn't have a good feeling about those but she was determined. They might just disappear...
