Susan in KY
I read through part of book one—it seems tame. I am bothered by the "buy the cards, play the game" commercialism/gaming. What does the hive think?
clarkacademy
I have read books 1-3 and I love them LOL!!! They are pretty good adventure and all nothing really bad and it all talks about different places in the world as well as quite a bit of history. mom31257
My dd has read them and really enjoys them. We did buy her some of the card packs at a Scholastic Book Warehouse sale. The link will help you find out if there is one in your area. They were 50% off that way.
Allearia
Well, can't help you with a Christian perspective, but my ds (8yo) is obssessed with these books. In fact, we had to go to the bookstore right after it opened this morning to buy Book 7 and a new card pack that came out today. There is a lot of marketing with these books. Lots of kids like collectible cards, and there are a lot. Then going to the website, always new info there. They talk about playing the game to win prizes, but we haven't really seen that. A lot of cards have codes or other puzzles associated with them and you solve them to get new clues on the site. There are also fake news reports and interviews on the site as if the adventure is happening right now. You can also supposedly play a game with the cards but ds hasn't done that, he probably would if he knew anyone else who was into the books. They are mostly collectible cards with famous people, places, clues on them. There are a lot of history, famous people, science, and geography references in the books and cards. They do encourage buying more and more card packs to get more clues. So lots of brilliant marketing to get people to buy more stuff, but some educational value to balance it out. I feel better about buying these books than pokemon or other cards. I haven't read them myself, just part of the first book, so I am just assuming they are all similar to that. AFwife Claire
We get them out of the library, where all the packs of cards are removed, so the commercialism has not been an issue at all for us. My boys know cards are available, but they have never asked for them or really been interested at all in getting them, or being on the website, or anything. However, they are incredibly excited whenever a new one comes out, and we immediately put our name on the waiting list at the library! We are conservative Christians, and there hasn't been any content that bothers us. I've read I think the first 5, and I have actually enjoyed them and learned something! Ah, I just remembered that I do not enjoy some of the sibling bickering, and how they occasionally call each other names. But the brother and sister really do hang on together and stick up for each other, so there is some positive role modeling there. I've made sure to emphasize that they do not always honor each other with how they talk to each other, or think about each other, and that I absolutely do not want any name-calling here! So far it hasn't been a problem.

newbie
My dd does not buy card or play game. She just reads the books and likes them.
cougarmom4
We love the books, too. My kids haven't even thought about the cards...so it hasn't been an issue at all for us.
Granny_Weatherwax
DS started the series when it first began but lost interest after the second book. He thought they were boring. The best part of the game was the web site which he also lost interest in shortly after losing interest in the books. The books are inexpensive but buying the card packs in an attempt to get the clues is crazy.
