Books about Missionaries...

Recommended Posts

What are you using this for?

ETA, these are people in countries where Christianity is illegal/persecuted. Some of what they have is very difficult stuff. Not for the faint of heart.

These folks:

persecution.com

https://www1.vombooks.com/ (their book site)

have a magazine they send out, as well as a web site, and TONS of resources.

Here's what I've got on my shelves:

Both of these are early elementary, as the stories are short:

  • Missionary Stories and the Millers
  • Hero Tales by Dave and Neta Jackson (several in the series)

Longer books which cover the life of one missionary:

We've also read some amazing missionary stories from more contemporary missionaries. I've gotten the names of these books from the Sonlight Catalogue:

  • Catching their Talk in a Box: the Life Story of Joy Ridder by Betty M. Hockett (There are apparently others in the series -- Life-Story Missions Series published by George Fox Press)

  • And the Word Came with Power: How God Met & Changed a People Forever by Joanne Shetler and Patricia Purvis

Both of these were fan.tas.tic and my son and I couldn't put the book down.

Hope this helps!

Please list books about missionaries...biographies, compilations, ect.

Please don't assume I know the more "well known/obvious" ones...I don't. List them anyways!:D

Thanks!:001_smile:

I've been known over the years to *highly* recommend the YWAM biographies called Christian Heroes Then & Now, written by Geoff & Janet Benge. It's a series of 30-35 books. They are well-written, and exciting to read; we've read them all and some of my kids have read them over and over. There's another series out there called Heroes of the Faith, I believe, and I do not believe these are as well written at all. I remember reading these, after reading the YWAM ones, and thinking, "Ick!"

I'm writing with a purpose in mind, I'll be honest, but my opinion is honest and if you search around a bit you'll see that others highly recommend this series, too. What I mean is that I'm now selling all our copies. They are in very good condition and I'm willing to talk about price; you can get them new from YWAM for $6.99 each. I believe we have all of them except the CS Lewis one. If you're interested, please PM me.

Greetings :) A second vote for the YWAM series called Christian Heroes Then & Now, written by Geoff & Janet Benge. My dd 9yo is on her 3rd book and loving them! I read the Gladys Aylward one and enjoyed it myself. It's been a great way to talk about geography, missions, living our own lives for the Kingdom, etc.

I am sending you a very long list of books about the countries/missionaries around the world. Some of the books are no longer published (00P), and you will have to search used/rare book collections to find them. Most of them are worth it! Some of the book you see repeatedly are collections of missionary stories put together for people to enjoy. The ones by Christian publishers are out of print, but I found many of them online (I think the Alliance Church put these out). They are called the Junior Jaffrays series and may be found under that name. I have done a lot of research to find these books. If you've read down to the bottom, you will find publisher names, which I hope are up to date. It has been a while since I've done this research, but I'm sure you could Google the companies . I have also included a couple of publishers whose web sites you can check out for more selection- I.E. Voice of the Martyrs (they have a large selection of absolutely wonderful books).

Through Gates of Splendor is a classic about Jim Elliot and was made into the movie End of the Spear (I don't think it has been listed yet).

That's a great classic.

Bruchko is my all time favorite. Easy read, compelling story. 19 year old who just gets on a plane and flies to south america without a dollar to his name or an agency to back him. Incredible story.

One of our all time favorites was "King of the Cannibals", the story of John Paton in the New Hebrides. (motherdear, you spelled it Payton, I think it's really Paton, and since he was English, maybe they pronouce it like Payton ?, but at any rate it's spelled Paton. We pronounced it like the General in WW2, Patton.)

Gripping reading. I forget the details of whether it's really gory or scary or anything, I just remember being glued. We read it aloud in the evenings.
