Sahamamama
I admit, it's a pet peeve of mine, back from the days when I tutored my nephew and saw his ps spelling lists: jump bump lump (so far, so good) lady bike enough it fox Can someone say, "RANDOM?" I'm trying to find a spelling program/list based on word families, or at least something more logically arranged than the above. TIA! bbsweetpea
I use the Wise Guide for spelling along with Spell to Write and Read. When I started I wanted lists that went together as well so I have lots of free info on my computer. I have all of the Spelling Connections books downloaded. Here is the link http://www.zaner-bloser.com/spellingconnections/practice-pages.html'>http://www.zaner-bloser.com/spellingconnections/practice-pages.html'>http://www.zaner-bloser.com/spellingconnections/practice-pages.html'>http://www.zaner-bloser.com/spellingconnections/practice-pages.html These are free. You can download all (once you click on each book) or just do the english lists one at a time. http://www.zaner-bloser.com/spellingconnections/practice-pages.html I also have Spell for Writing workbooks and teaching guides level 1 to 5 but I can't find the link online. I will look and see if I can get it for you. Here it is http://www.eric.ed.gov/ERICWebPortal/Home.portal;jsessionid=JLGMs1nLvTlTV55mXZy0Z2tTqpVGThHGTRhYC3yRxMJNq22Sbphy!790695772?_nfpb=true&ERICExtSearch_SearchValue_0=Spelling+for+Writing+Student+Activity+Book&searchtype=keyword&ERICExtSearch_SearchType_0=ti&_pageLabel=ERICSearchResult&_urlType=action Hopefully that works ... scroll down for each grade Edited October 30, 2009 by bbsweetpea
nd293
What about Sequential Spelling? It has been a long time since I looked at it, but I think it might fit the bill.
christine in al
And trust it. With the placement test, the student starts every year where they TEST , not at some random " beginning second grade" word list. I like that. oh , If you are a conservative Christian, the sentences may fit you well, if not, you may want to make up your own. Take a look at them. The writer definately has an agenda. I just fix the sentences and and appreciate all her hard work on the other bits. ~c. in al Edited October 30, 2009 by christine in al more to add
Chris in VA
Spelling Power. SWO is also pretty good.
Sasharowan
We use Natural Speller. It has words arranged in lists by how it is spelled. For instance, 'er' words, 1-2 graders would have words with 'er' in the middle while older kids would have words ending in 'er'. You can pick and choose the lists they do also. LisainVirginia
I had not seen those before - thanks much!
FO4UR
I use SWR WISE Guide too. It's not built into word families...but purposely so. It spirals through the phonograms & spelling rules so your dc cannot just memorize "-ump" this week for spelling and forget the pattern the next week. If you want some other resources Blend Phonics, Word Mastery and Webster's Speller are great and free.:D http://donpotter.net/education_pages/blend_phonics.html
hopeallgoeswell
Dd uses Spelling Workout. I has a "rule" for each list. I like the way they are grouped and the lessons are short (5mins/4Xwk). We have been using it for almost a year now with dd who is a natural speller, and it is working well. CBD has samples http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/easy_find?Ntk=keywords&Ntt=spelling+workout&action=Search&N=0&Ne=0&event=ESRCN&nav_search=1&cms=1&Go.x=22&Go.y=13. HTH! Imprimis
I have used Spelling Workout with all 3 of my dc (little dd is using A now) with much success. It teaches spelling patterns, rules, and it's phonics based. SWO also teaches basic proofreading skills, which I think is helpful.
sarahv
Victory Drill is a complete (K-3rd or 4th grade, I think) phonics reader and speller. It's set up in word family lists, with all the rules in the back. I love the way it is set up in such an organized manner. http://www.victorydrillbook.com/victory_drill_book.htm
ElizabethB
Some free resources good for that age are Easy Steps in Spelling and Pollard's Synthetic Speller, linked here: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Spelling/spellingforsucce.html Random word lists are a pet peeve of mine, right below sight words. MerryAtHope
Check out All About Spelling. It's incremental and very logical, based on the Orton Gillingham phonograms and uses rules that really work. It's also multisensory. My kids enjoy it and find it effective. Here's a link. Hope you find the right program for you! Merry :-)
