7th grade dd:

The Odyssey (she liked it)

Gulliver's Travels (did not like/did not even finish)

Blood on the River: Jamestown, 1607 (To go with our history studies. She liked it)

Robinson Crusoe (listened to this one. She said she prefers reading the book rather than listening)

The Three Musketeers (liked okay)

The Journals of Captain John Smith: A Jamestown Biography (liked okay)

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (liked okay)

That's what she's done so far, aside from her reading on her own. We are going to the Library tomorrow as there are more she wants to check out.

ETA: Oh, she's going to start "The Scarlet Pimpernel" soon. The wording is hard to get through sometimes, but it's an interesting story! Then we'll watch the 1982 movie version. I LOVE that one! :D

For assigned reading my 6th and 7th graders are reading The City of Ember right now ..kinda easy but fun to start the year off with. I found a study website to go along with it. http://http://www.mce.k12tn.net/reading52/city_of_ember.htm

Next we will read The Hobbit at their request. We will also be reading some historical fiction this year for ancient history such as the Bronze bow and the Children's Homer.

On their own for fun, 6th grade son is reading books from the Warriors series (cat adventures) and 7th grade daughter...well, I don't know what she is reading this week but she is usually reading something. We've been crazy busy this week with other things.

My 6th grader is dyslexic.

Her current free-reading choice is Pillage.

http://www.amazon.com/Pillage-Obert-Skye/dp/1590389220/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1253666972&sr=8-2

Her current assigned book is The Legend of Jimmy Spoon.

http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Jimmy-Spoon-Kristiana-Gregory/dp/0152167765/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1253667017&sr=1-1

Her last free-choice book was the 2nd Mysterious Benedict Society book. Her next free-choice book is going to be The Farfield Curse. By the time she finishes that, the 3rd Mysterious Benedict Society book will be out. After that, she'll read the newest Warriors book (if it's out yet).

http://www.amazon.com/Mysterious-Benedict-Society-Trenton-Stewart/dp/0316003956/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1253667172&sr=1-1

I'm not sure what her next assigned book will be. I try to give her 2-3 books to choose between. Her next set of books to choose from will be Brady (Fritz), Steal Away Home (Ruby), and Freedom Train: Story of Harriet Tubman (Sterling).
