Ds9 is looking for good historical fiction to read

Recommended Posts

Our favorite books have been ones out of the VP catalog, as well as Bethlehem books. The Bethlehem books website also has a handy timeline that you can use to sort out which of their books to read along with the period in history that you are studying.

In LCC, Drew recommends the Roman Mysteries series and those have been a big hit here, but I'd say they'd be a very easy read for an advanced 9yo. Drew recommends them in his grade 4 history section.

My son recently started reading this series (well part of it, we went in with other families b/c of the cost so we don't have all of them). They are very Christian so be aware of that if you're not looking for that. My 9 yr old son is really starting to enjoy these.

DD the Elder has enjoyed:

Sea of Trolls (so good we've just started the sequel)

The Canterbury Tales (McCaughrean)

My Guardian Angel (Weil)

Pyle's Robin Hood

Adam of the Road

Catherine, Called Birdy (some oblique sexual references)

The Midwife's Apprentice

Matilda Bone

Castle in the Attic and Battle for the Castle

A Proud Taste of Scarlet and Miniver

Erik the Viking (Jones)

Sutcliff's Arthur trilogy (The Sword and the Circle, etc.)

Sutcliff's Beowulf

The Knight and the Squire and They Lady and the Squire -- by Terry Jones. The second volume mentions rape in passing (the horrors of the Hundred Years' War for many French peasants are apparent, but not lingered upon). These are for the most part fun adventure books.

If reading level is not an issue, Henty is the cream of the crop in our house for historical fiction. My 7 yr old, and 5 yr old think things like the box-car children are boring after listening to me read Henty's historical fiction.

The books published by Preston Speed have the easiest to read type. I buy from Rainbow Resource usually. Preston Speed also keeps a few titles discounted.
