  1. That's what we're doing. Valentine's Day? No, it's Walking Dead day! ;)
  2. I'm pretending to be interested. It gives me an excuse to sit on the couch and do nothing.
  3. What curriculum do you suggest for a student who does not enjoy studying foreign languages? I'm looking for something that will (hopefully) inspire and encourage her. She is an artsy type and enjoys learning about other cultures - just NOT speaking other languages. Thanks!
  4. Thanks, everyone. If I did decide to just continue with Saxon's recommended scope & sequence (Alg. 1, Alg. 2, Adv. Math), then how does that look on a transcript? Won't colleges be looking specifically for a geometry credit? Would I list it as Alg. 1 with Geometry and then Alg. 2 with Geometry? Thanks!
  5. What do you use for geometry? I know some geometry is included in the Alg. 1 & Alg. 2 texts, but I'm not comfortable with only that. I want a full year. What do you recommend? ETA: I need a program with either a DVD or CD-ROM teacher component. I also need a solutions manual. Thanks!
  6. We had our greatest success with this one: http://www.amazon.com/Nature-Connection-Workbook-Families-Classrooms/dp/1603425314/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1454706972&sr=1-1&keywords=nature+study+connection I still have mine and would sell it if you're interested.
  7. Thanks, everyone. You have given me some good ideas and advice. More people are beginning to express interest. I will keep you all updated on how it goes.
  8. Thanks for your thoughts. I want it to be a mix of sharing our struggles and pain, but also for uplifting and encouraging one another. I want us to have some fun meetings, where we we just hang out like regular people. I also want my other children to meet other kids who have special needs siblings. I want them to know that they're not the only ones who are on this journey. Also, I feel very alone around most special needs families myself. My daughter is severely mentally insufficient with significant developmental delays. She is also visually impaired and has "autistic tendencies." It's quite a unique diagnosis combination. She is very cognitively-impaired and has extremely limited communication. Most families I know have children who can carry on at least a simple conversation and can even read. I spent all of January in a depressive state over things, and then I decided to be proactive and do something about it. I'd love to hear more thoughts about what kinds of meetings and activities you would like to see in a group. Thank you.
  9. How many of you belong to one? If you don't, would you be interested in joining one? Another lady and I are starting a special needs support group at our parish. I've had interest from two other families so far. This is something that *I* really need, but I'm not getting much response from other special needs families. I'm just wondering why that might be.
  10. Thanks. I will be using them with a co-op class that meets once a week. I'm wondering how hard it will be to tweak the activities intended for a five-day week school schedule. Of course I will be assigning homework, so I think I could make it work.
  11. I'd go with Sonlight for those ages and for what you said you are looking for in a curriculum.
  12. I absolutely HATE for my comforter to touch my face. I have to fold the sheet over the top of the comforter every night. The sheet has to be the only thing touching my face.
  13. I'd go with FIAR for a 5yo. I used it when my children were younger. We made some of our best memories during those years. We added in extras, too. It's enough to stand alone, but I always found lots of fun things to add! I have a blog with our activities as well as some Pinterest boards for a lot of the books. If you're interested, I'll link them for you.
  14. No, I don't. If it's a major purchase, then yes. Minor things? No.
  15. Anyone have experience with these? I'm specifically looking at this one to use with Edith Hamilton's Mythology in a high school co-op setting: https://www.prestwickhouse.com/book/id-300299/Edith_Hamiltons_Mythology_-_Teaching_Unit. Also, if you have any tried and true literature guides to use with this book, I'm definitely open to suggestions. Thanks!
  16. I've never used these. I am currently looking at this one to use with Edith Hamilton's Mythology in a co-op setting: https://www.prestwickhouse.com/book/id-300299/Edith_Hamiltons_Mythology_-_Teaching_Unit. Anyone have experience with these guides? Thanks! Also, if you have any tried and true literature guides for this book, please share those with me. Thanks!
  17. Yes, but it's something I learned on the job when I left home in my early 20's.
  18. I'm wondering about the possibility that my special needs daughter is going through early puberty or if she's at least only a couple of years from starting it. Recently she has been lethargic and having more meltdowns. She'll be 8 in March. *Sigh* It's been really tough already.
