  1. It's funny you would mention your child seeing the order and organization and such. We struggle over here...lots. I've been working with them...whew.. It could seem like none of it was doing any good. All of a sudden out if nowhere few days ago my dd12 that has had so much reading trouble...picked up a book and wound up reading 2 and a half stories from different books. Then today?? Now, I haven't been able to get any details out if him. Trouble with what kind of details etc. He wrote a book! Pictures, a story and it was a story that he completely made up himself! It was complete sentences , well constructed sentences. Used adjectives ( he could t rember what an adj. Was last week lol) I mean....it was like a page off of wwe! Beautiful and all around very well done. Visualizing and verbalizing helped a ton, but...I attribute his being able to write as well as he did, to wwe. He has severe LC, so this for him was like...4th of July lol. ;) If you kep teach-in wwe, you will see the fruit later. Nothing has gotten through to him. The systematic incremental approach, you just can't beat. I know it seems like...woe...what is this really doing for me? Well, it does. One day you'll notice..hey, my kiddos a pretty good writer :)
  2. Sorry. I can't edit that last part off. This old slow phone...ugh
  3. That's good.good Schooling I know has to be comforting . Hubby gr
  4. I'm trying to understand what your asking here. Are you wondering if maybe you have a 2e kid? Or if you are thinking it's curriculum? Or what
  5. Awesome :) it's a fun crazy ride and some really great ladies here. Tons of experience here for us to draw from. Love these boards!! :) And Singapore math haha
  6. Yea....teach-in to the test. Ugh. I thought they all did that. The schools have pressure to be A schools, because....thst draws families with money. Which in turn...brings money into the county by way of taxes and thriving businesses. Maybe Lecka, are your kids in a DOD school? You guys on post? They do t have that pressure. They operate on the rotation system ...this unit in...this unit out lol. You living off post? Civilian schools have to make the A, which means....teach for the test.
  7. Oh. Yea....when we pulled our boys out of PS. We had a couple meetings with the teachers just before that... All of 2nd and 3 Rd grades had taken out spelling completely! I was shocked. They said...they didn't have time to teach it. Ohhh...k. Makes sense lol
  8. Promise...you can make it fun :)Let him choose the story . Act excited to do a math problem to show dad ( I make dad act enthusiast lol) And praise his handwriting :) I say my boys are like...puppies lol...praise em and they get so happy lol
  9. Yea, agreeing with peaceful isle. You gave to have the workbooks. They really won't retain just watching the videos without taking it to paore in the workbooks. I know it's expensive. There very thick books tho. Once you get them I think you'll see why they cost so much. There's alot of meat in there. Plus enrichment activities. Lots of practice . I was thinking about what was said about buying g the books that would be written in, that would be alot of work for mama to erase the answers and where another child had worked out the problem ...like..alot of work. I'm just trying to save you much trouble and money. BC if you buy them written in...I think you'll get really frustrated and wind up buying new anyway lol
  10. Yea....you really do need the workbooks. That's where all the work is practiced. They need to work the problems plus, the workbook gives problems that are unique to mus.
  11. Ahhh. Well , those eval trips are hard. Hard on me anyway. It's always nice when it works out that you can combine business and pleasure :) Seeing old friends. That's such a shot in the arm isn't it? I love going to see old friends. There are some I've really been missing lately. So glad you got to do that :)
  12. They probably were afraid "friend" was code for attorney Baha! ;) ...and prayer :) I know i was and I'm sure others were too, praying for her in this. That can be scary. She did awesome :)
  13. Wow!!!!? That's sooo awesome! Very very happy for you. Man...that's just fantastic. :) Ha-ha citrus...they be like...ohhhh no...we don't want problems lol. So very cool. You did good girl! :)
  14. K...thanks. I typed in math in focus...but I didn't add the 3 part. I got only 1 manual and tins of other math books that weren't MIF ir Singapore related at all. Ugh. I'm such an electronic idiot lol. Usually hubby or DS 20 does it for me. Hubby out of town, DS is living it up before he goes back to work lol I would see if I put on the classifieds here that I needed it if I would vet a response . There are things in 3 thst my youngest... Just isn't getting. On a positive note tho, it gives DS 12 an opportunity to "teach" it to him which we know....is how those lil kiddos cement that stuff :) Mixed bag there lol Man, you've been traveling alot this summer huh? :) good for you. I wanna travel!!! (Cry-y voice lol) Enjoy it girl. :)
  15. Yes...EKS is right. Definitely the hig. I read what swb wrote about it and she said a homeschool mom should choose the hig, and don't teach without it as it is rich with additional info on 'how' to teach the Singapore way. It's very different than how we teach math and have taught math here in the U.S. Not only that, it's loaded with oral practice of HOW to teach the kids laterally, picture ( bar models and the partsbto whole and whole to parts method). There's alot of info in thst hig. Have fun with it, my son told me just yesterday , mom, I like spending this time with you and bonding :) awwww! Welcome to the boards, they have helped me alot :) Good first post! :)
  16. Farmers almanac. I can't remember when the first one became available , but my family members ,of their most precious books handed down , aside from the family Bible...next was the farmers almanac. I could be wrong , but I'm thinking cookbooks came ...wasn that around the turn if the century ? The 1900's timeframe? Of the 10 books you were listing /brainstorming about a little bit upthread. I would think to add.. In some homes certainly the strongs concordance, Shakespeare still. Though I believe the shift from British books became a bit less prevalent as America started to accumulate our own sources , probably Shakespeare would have been one of the only 'entertainment' books available. I definitely think Ben Franklin s autobiography , not exactly sure of the original publication on thst though. Farmers almanac , as told by my grandmother before she passed, was a staple as per ber relatives journal writings. I'm goin to call my uncle. He's 83 and has devoted much time to proven genealogy, tracking down diaries passed down by family members. Apparently, my relative were prolific writers. For their own pleasure , satisfaction, and for future generations . We have boooks and books of compilations of things recorded, family stories etc. My uncle has proven us to have landed at sewells point ( Sewell is my maiden name) in va in 1634. They est. Sewells point where Norfolk naval base is now built *around* . they allowed my family to keep thst very tiny plot of land. I should have the word *keep* in quotation, as it was a fight for my family to keep that. The Navy finally caved. One of my great great great ish lol, grandfather's fought tooth and nail to keep it. My uncle actually had a list of what was in the bookshelves of our particular families bookshelves in the mid to late 1800's . he found this based on the writings of our ancestors . I have copies of some of the writings, my uncle made me a nice book of geneology, important facts, books owned and those read, some of their writings. Ben Franklin autobiography is what led me down this bunny trail lol. All or most of my paternal relatives owned a farmer's almanac . I remember reading through family papers, the disputes pre 1900 of what should be included in the almanac. I chuckled. Struck me as funny. Someone needs mentioned orphans. This originally struck me when my big kids were younger. 1800 - around late 1940's , orphans were common. I read , a personal writing by i forget who, there were more orphans than kids with parents, additionally, of the kids who had parents, having only 1 parent was more common than I would have thought . This was due to wars, sickness, famine, but it struck me , more from wars and anything else . Fathers fought the war, mother.wound up sick and died. Then you have ww1 that brought even more of this. But I know, that's a later timeframe. Fascinating . I'm going to see if I can't dig out some of those copies of writings. ....and...call my uncle :) Have alot going on here with the little boys, wish I had more time to dedicate to this. I enjoy it :) ETA: I'm pretty sure on that date of sewells point landing. It was 1630 something and I'm pretty sure was 1634
  17. Ha-ha..I was just comin back to ask you. I'm not finding it at all...I know it's a bother...but would you please mind sending me a link? I'm sorry to even ask...but...me and electronics... Well. Ugh. Not my thing. Do you mind me asking if you could possibly send a link?
  18. Awesome. Thank you so much. I'm soooo excited :) Nite :) my migrane bootie gonna go put this fraction 'fun' haha...day to bed :)
  19. Really??? Wow. That cheap? Man, thank you for doin that onestep . Idk where I'm lookin on Amazon lol. You know I don't know what I'm doin online :) Hmm. Lemme go look. I am gonna need 3a and 3b for my youngest. Gonna go look...thank you so much for doing that.
  20. McGuffey's are mine!! Lol. I'm battling a migrane. Fractions with my APD child got me today . I so enjoy chattin with you , I hate I'm missing this thread today...gotta get rid of this before it blows wide open and I start getting sick from it. Vaquitita , hubby gonna get with you in the morning and do the 'paperwork' on 'em. I so...very excited :) Migrane migrane go away...don't come again another day haha ;) Oiy:/
  21. It normally takes us, including breaks, about an hour and a half to 2 hours. My boys need lots and lots of review though. They have some learning challenges . With my big kids though, it took us around an hour. Math is just something I have always felt like needs a decent amount of time to really get the orders of operations down. For my nt kids, around an hour, LC kids hour and half to 2 hours but that includes lots of breaks :)
  22. I looked at Amazon. I did t know about abe. I was thinkin maybe fewer people use it? Idk. You see Singapore for sale a good bit. The sell the level they've finished to vet the next level. That's how I got my 4. I'll check Abe, and keep looking on Amazon . I've looked here too on the classifieds . I'll keep looking. My little guy is going to need MIF along side reg SM. I kinda figured you kept them for reference or review. Good stuff there . Bet you never thought you'd hear me say THAT huh? :)
  23. We like AAR and AAS . I also use rtlt , and phonics pathways. Phonics pathways maybe sounds like what you're looking for. It's not scripted, it's O-G, and has a really cute funny encouraging guy who every page gives cutsie lil encouraging sayings :) I've used phonics pathways with all 5 of my kids. I and they love it :) It's not that expensive and the O-G method is proven timeless method. Actually, all I recommended ate O-G. We like the rtlt alot too . it has the elson readers in it which again, a proven timeless set of phonics readers. She does word analysis in it too. Phonics pathways has lots of word family practice . I dont think you can beat it :)
  24. Ya know onestep... As I think about it and I've noticed this before...I don't really see too many used MIF's. Even when I've looked on like vegsource. What levels are you using? Do you sell yours when you're done? Or do you keep them for review ? I'm a book hoarder I've realized lol . I keep everything. It's good though cuz occasionally a new homeschooler comes along and money's tight I can pass w/e I have that's useful to them. Will you let me know if there are any you want to get rid of and what levels they are? We're all over the place. I have reg SM 2,3, and 4. I only have MIF in 2B . I would t mind getting the upper levels for my youngest. Or, if you hear or know of anyone . even maybe real life friends thst use it and wanting to get rid of any levels.
