  1. I'm not sure if this counts as "free" but I am homeschooling this year, and most likely will next year too, with "no additional money" by selling what I'm done with and only using that money to buy the next things I need.
  2. This was what I was wondering. Maybe if you could share a few more details, we could help you find other solutions. FWIW, this is a homeschool board, and most of us aren't going to encourage you to put your children in public school. ;)
  3. It wouldn't be terribly difficult. It's just a matter of doing it. ;) It's really just like assigning a report in history class or science class, but no, I didn't get it done very often.
  4. It would partly depend on the age(s) of your child(ren). Level A is for 3rd through 5th graders age-wise (not necessarily ability), level B is for 6th - 8th graders and level C is for 9th-12th grades although advanced 8th graders would do fine with C also. The SWI is the beginning point if you want Mr. Pudewa to teach for you. Start with the SWI for the age of your child. If you have multiple ages, shoot for the middle. After the SWI, you could do the SICC for that level, but after that it would depend. This would be a good time to go to one (or more) theme based books. Each of the SICC's is definitely for that age, so you wouldn't want to put a 6th or 7th grader in Level C, because Level C is definitely high school level work.
  5. IF you use the recommended book On Teaching Writing and IF you remember apply the writing lessons to other classes, then it's enough through about 5th or 6th grade. From 7th grade up, though, many of the writing assignments are in the reading teacher's guide as compare/contrast essays, etc.
  6. So far, it's a normal winter in the midwest. Ours is supposed to hit about 11 a.m. We are expecting about 20" plus winds up to 45 mph. My mom heard that we haven't had a snow like this since 1967. I was 2 then so I don't remember for sure. ;) I know we've had bad winters before (in the 70's and early 80's), but I think they were because of multiple storms, not just one storm like this.
  7. It could probably be a lot of things, but my first guess would be hormones. :D
  8. Yes, we are in central Illinois also, and the forecast is for 18+ plus 20-30 mph winds (gusting to 40+). It has been 12 years since we had a snowstorm like this, and the last one before that was 1985.
  9. I'm sure there must be something you can do online, but this is the one I've used. It sure pegged our oldest child (now 21) well. Unfortunately, the shipping will probably cost you more than the test itself.
  10. In Illinois it varies. Costs depend on the agreement between the college and the high school. Usually, the high school pays for the class as long as it is something not offered by the high school. This would make it free to the student. For homeschooled students though, the "high school" is the parents, so the parents pay for the class(es).
  11. what do you like equally well for chemistry and physics?
  12. We like it....most days. ;) It is very rigorous, and at least for us, it's not as independent as previous grades. DD needs me to teach it, but she's doing fairly well. I think they have all the testers they need. I believe they hope to spend next year with the corrections and printing, but it wouldn't cost you anything to ask. :)
  13. I have no experience with Math Relief, but my dd went to CLE's new Sunrise Edition of Algebra 1 (field testing) after the 700 level and is doing fine.
  14. My DD's twin!!! I just posted the same question on another forum, except that we are doing CLE's Sunrise Algebra 1 (field testing). I'll be :bigear:
  15. Thanks to all of you! We're definitely not "in the mood" for another surgery. We'll be more than happy to try all of the above ideas. Thanks again!:001_smile:
  16. My dd says to put the cartridge in the ds lite. For some reason Mario Cart will not work in the dsi. It comes up with an error message. If they put it in the ds lite, the person with the lite can go into multi-player mode and invite the other person. HTH :)
  17. Several years ago (approx. 6 years ago) ds (now 11) had surgery for a sebaceous cyst on his ear. Instead of stitching it, the doctor just packed it, so when it was healed it left a small hole. Yesterday we noticed that this spot has become slightly swollen, slightly bruised, and tender to the touch. Does this sound like it's coming back (it never bruised before), an infection, or something else?
  18. Yes, if you have a game with multi-player mode, they should work together. Some games are funny. DD and DS have one game that HAS to go in the DSI to connect, but most can be put in either one to work. Then the one with the cartridge has to go into multi-player mode and "invite" the other one to play.
  19. ACE has been used successfully by many people. Like anything else, it works well for some but not for everyone. You will want to check with the school though to see HOW they use the placement tests. ACE does not recommend placing students above grade level no matter how well the student does. If the school follows ACE's recommendation in this, your children would only be given the placement test to determine "gaps", not to place your children ahead. In that case, I agree with those who say your children will most likely be bored.
  20. I agree he shouldn't have to study for an algebra test. I see your other two are using CLE math, and I was thinking he was too. Is there a reason he isn't? I highly recommend it, but I know you are familiar with it. :)
  21. :iagree: I agree. They can even work on it for a while, take a break to eat a snack, and come back to it later.
  22. I'm glad you mentioned that. I did think that SICC-B finished what SWI-B started. I went to the IEW site to check it out and you are so right. I didn't realize that SICC-C covered even more. I thought it was just at a higher level. Thanks!
  23. Right, but you will need both the SWI and the SICC if you want him to teach everything that's in the TWSS.
  24. I don't know anything about Essay Voyage, so I'm no help there. I would guess from what the others have said that you could get by without EE.
  25. :iagree: DD and I find Ibuprofen to be a "girl's best friend".
