  1. Yep, and the sad thing is that it has been happening for years and years. I have two older children (30&28) who attended ps. M. Monroe received more attention than the founding fathers.
  2. We used SWB's writing suggestions (dictation, summary, outlines, etc) when ds was younger and then her rhetoric level recommendations (Rulebook for Arguments, Oxford Guide). I must say that ds is a good writer. Plus, he can write a paper quickly which I think will help in college. Case in point (which is why I responded to your questions:001_smile:) - he has a paper due this morning at 7:00 comparing the epic hero/Aurthorian (romantic) hero/ tragic hero. He has procrastinated for days (can we say 17yo boy;)) I woke up at 3:30 am and noticed the lights were still on in the den. I got up to investigate, and found him finishing his paper. He can write a quality paper in no time which I attribute it to the rigor of WTM . Put on your ear muffs (to silence the doubting voices) and stick with it-It WILLl pay off!
  3. I hope someone can help you:001_smile: Ds used Jacob's, but not independently.
  4. I have three "books" waiting to be read on my bedside table  Maybe the Nook will motivate me to get the others read. FWIW, if you are trying to decide between a Nook and a Kindle, the complaints against it have been corrected with the 1.3 update. I like it and can't wait to use it.!!!
  5. Although we have only used the British Lit (book 4-I think?), I really like it. I think it is much more "mature" than other programs.
  6. I would like an ipad too, but it is the cost factor. I have researched until my eyes are glazed over:D, and they both have their pros and cons. I read that the Nook was slow, but that the 1.3 update fixed that problem; is that so?
  7. I received a very sweet card from my dh an 4 kiddos (two are married) which contained a picture of a Kindle and a Nook. Sooo, now I have to choose.?? Which one do I want?? I jokingly said that is why I had 4 children- so I could get awesome Mother's Day presents. Can you imagine what Ms Dugger ( I don't know the mom's name) will get on Mother's Day when her kids are grown??
  8. Soda is for baking Pops is our grandchildren's term of endearment for my husband "Soft drink" or "coke" (lower case c) is a drink
  9. Top grain (full grain) leather is more expensive, but is very durable and will withstand pets and kids. Split grain is less expensive, but less resistant. Check the label underneath before you buy. I have a leather coach, chair, and ottoman which still look great despite two teens, two grandchildren, and two dogs!
  10. Wow, what a difficult position to be in, Cynthia. I think that I would let the grades stand. What about the poor 8th grader who studied diligently and asked questions, etc. What would he (and his parents) think if he found out that the older students were allowed to take the test again. He earned his grade, the others did not. Something for nothing is a reflection of our society, is it not?
  11. Yep, and then your kids find out that the answers are subjective- "ANSWERS WILL VARY" DD said, You mean there are no RIGHT answers? "Then what is the point??? Can't I just enjoy the book?" -------------------------------------------------------------------- I enjoy SWB's story about her brother (the hive computer guy :001_smile: ) who did poorly in Freshman comp because he was required to keep a journal about his daily impressions/expectations. To him it was just another day.
  12. girl, boy, boy, girl grandchildren; boy girl How perfect is that???
  13. In college I couldn't focus during Economics and statistics classes, two subjects that my ds, a sr next year, will be taking. It will be an interesting year:rolleyes:
  14. My dh just told me that I received a package in the mail today. I'm sure it is LoF statistics. I'm on my way out the door, but I'll look it over tonight so if you have questions about content, I'll try to answer. Warning: Statistics and Economics were the two college classes that made my eyes glaze over.:D
  15. I have the book, but there is no way to choose 25 discoveries. The book is 700+ pages and covers from 500BC to present :svengo: 500 AD to present is covered in 1 year intervals.
  16. Before my dd began ps (9th grade), I would have agreed with you; however, after viewing the course level in advanced algebra and advanced geometry, I now say that it is about the same level :(
  17. I don't know if you are interested in Math-U See, but they offer calculus. http://homeschoolcalculus.com/
  18. I'm new to knitting and recently joined Ravelry. I have a few of you listed as "Friends". Does anyone else have an account there? I enjoy seeing what others are making:001_smile:
  19. knitting (I'm new to this, but loving it!) reading growing my herb garden hiking and canoeing (well, not so much since I hit 51) and of course... grandchildren
  20. This is not intended to be snarky :001_smile:, but for an older student, I would buy them a Franklin speller and not worry about it.. Some people are natural spellers, some never get it to click. :001_smile: I would spend my time on writing.
  21. :iagree::iagree: Yep, we are reviewing logs today because it floated away, yet it is vitally important. Ds did very well on the test in Foerster alg 2 and in CD pre-cal ( at the beginning of this year). sigh. Thank goodness for homeschooling
  22. :iagree: Having lived in two Asian countries, I agree. I will add that in Singapore the teachers that teach elementary subjects DO NOT have an "elem. ed." degree. If they teach math, they have a math degree; science, a science degree. This is a HUGE DIFFERENCE. Years ago, when I realized that I had more science and math than most elementary teachers, I decided that it was possible for me to teach my own children.
