  1. Wondering if there are two series. Is it Tuesday Next or Thursday Next?
  2. :grouphug:My husband is a senior pastor:001_smile: I didn't read the posts of the "thanking the church staff" thread, but when I read the title, I knew it wouldn't be long before animosity surfaced:confused::confused: Hope you have a blessed week!
  3. Yet another fiction question:). I have a lot of favorite classics, but I'm curious- who is your favorite contemporary author, and what is your favorite book??
  4. Thanks. Your replies are always interesting. Nice to know I'm not alone:001_smile:
  5. When my now 28 yo ds was young, we faced this issue. He had a history of recurrent throat infections which finally resulted in a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. Following the surgery, the surgeon said his adenoids were huge and were obstructing his airways during sleep causing sleep apnea. Bed wetting ceased, he gained weight, wasn't cranky, and no longer had dark circles under his eyes. It was an amazing change.
  6. I agree with most of you-meh. I'm almost finished with "Death in Holy Orders", and although I haven't read enough of her works to form an opinion, i must say that I'm disappointed in this book. But... my problem is this: I haven't read much contemporary fiction in years; I usually read nonfiction, but needed a change and was excited to join the reading challenge here at the hive thinking it would be fun to enjoy a few current, light reads. But, most of what I have read has been disappointing, KWIM? What happened to the feeling of not wanting a book to end? Is it me?
  7. Hmm, how about MUS calculus or LOF statistics or PA homeschoolers AP stats?
  8. May I post here? I'm not sure which "reading group" I joined So... I finally finished Sharon Penman's trilogy - When Christ and His Saints Slept, Time and Chance, and The Devil's Brood (wow, almost 2000 pages total) I learned a lot but need a break before I read more of her books. The Chatham School Affair http://www.amazon.com/Chatham-School.../dp/0553571931 - very thought-provoking The Dogs of Riga http://www.amazon.com/Dogs-Riga-Henn...9207737&sr=1-1 The last two are very different from what I usually read, but I needed a few light reads. KWIM?? I plan to read Middlemarch next. __________________

  10. Dh's degree is from Baylor; mine are from state schools. Ds will go to a state school for undergrad and then out of state for vet degree. Dd is undecided. A friend of ours tells the story about his time as a JAG in the navy. Several were talking about where they recieved their degrees (all elite schools) and how much they owed in student loans. They asked him where he recieved his law degree. He told them U of A. They asked how much he owed in student loans; he said, "Nothing". Finally someone said, "Wow, and we have the same job with the same pay." If mmy dc recieved scholarships to an elite school, that would be great, but I would not want them to graduate deeply in debt.
  11. There is only Costco in the Philippines; it is in Manila. Doesn't help if you lived on another island because it cost too much to ship your purchases, but you could at least buy a few creature comforts:001_smile: Jakarta, Indonesia had one also, but then again it doesn't help much if you live elsewhere.
  12. It's not my usual thing either. We were in Ecuador a few weeks ago, and I found them as I was brosing our firend's books. Did you like Faceless Killers? I'm trying to decide which to purchase next.
  13. I just discovered author Henning Mankell. Fun reading! Do any of you read his books?
  14. Can you help discuss pros and cons of the murder of Caesar? Pro: protecting republic (a senator was responsible for protecting freedom against tyranny. Didn't want democracy ( felt that only morally grounded men can govern themselves, and the crowd ws very fickle) con- he hadn't done anything wrong! the republic was weak and corrupt the conspirators weren't protecting Rome-they were jealous of Caesar any other points to make??
  15. sorry- my computer is doing strange things!!
  16. has anyone used this? Do you have to give credit card info to sign up for the 30 day trial period? If so, is it easy to cancel? P. S. My friend gave ds a one-year subscription to a magazine. For months after the subscription expired, they charged her a small few every few months (not having a monthly fee ensured that it was easily overlooked). When she finally tried to cancel, the automated message did not give a "cancel" option, and she could never reach a real person. It took her a long time to get it worked out.
  17. We arrived in a country where we were supporting nationals who were build orphanages as well as other projects/ feeding-programs etc. We had just arrived at the airport which was dismal and had numerous armed guards with machine guns. My dh and the head of the organization had to step away to complete all the paperwork, so he handed me a briefcase containing over 20K and told me to watch it for him. Needless to say, it was difficult to keep my composure.
  18. In South American countries, a packet of mayo is included in every bag of Lay's:001_smile:
  19. :iagree: We used Traditional Logic then Rulebook for Arguments and Kane's The New Oxford Guide to Writing.
  20. BTDT It does hurt, especially when it is your last student to HS.
  21. I'm finishing Sharon Penman's trilogy of Henry and Eleanore, and would like to watch the movie from Netflix- which version do you recommend?? I think I know which version you will choose, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Thank you:)
