  1. WHA uses the Socratic Logic by Kreeft text in their Logic 2 class. It has been my daughter's favorite class this year. Dr. Vierra is a gifted teacher and pushes the students to think deeply.
  2. It is definitely a thorough and solid course. We are saving the labs for a summer at home lab intensive as we moved in the middle of this school year. I'm sorry I can't help much with that.
  3. My husband is using it with my dd this year. Do you have any specific questions? It is working well for my non-science loving daughter. It is very straight forward in terms of expectations of what needs to be learned in each chapter. My husband is a doctor and has been satisfied with it as well. I haven't been very involved in the course as it isn't my strength, but I can ask them any particular questions you have.

    Baylor?

Congrats to your son Yvonne! I graduated from Baylor in 2000 with a psychology degree so I may be too old to be helpful, but I'll try. I followed the scholarship trail to Baylor. It wasn't my first choice, but I wanted to graduate debt free. I was in the honors program which was fantastic and I think has gotten better since I left. Although Baylor is large, they pulled out all of the stops for their honors students to succeed in college and beyond. I got accepted into every PhD program I applied to except one ( and I messed up the interview-not Baylor's fault) and I am convinced it was the close relationships with profs developed, encouragement in research, and mentoring I received from Baylor professors that helped me succeed. As for fit, Baylor was a definite culture shift for me coming from an east coast city. I'm not sure what it is like now. Perhaps others can help. It seems strange Baylor waitlisted him only to offer him a spot with a generous scholarship. College admissions is an enigma!
  5. Hopefully someone else will give you ideas because it sounds like this isn’t a great match for you. Logic 2 is distinctly Christian. The kids are told to bring their Bible to class and it is often used. Discussion board topics are often about applying Scripture to some issue. The class assumes the students are in Christian families. Perhaps my delay in responding will serve as a bump and someone else can point you in a different direction.
  6. From what I can tell, all 3 are fantastic options. I watched Mrs. Jester’s class last year during the open house. She is a high energy, enthusiastic teacher who kept the class moving quickly. Based on my dd’s year with DO for math I can believe the positive reviews. Next year I have two taking physics. One loves the WHA format with two live classes a week and is signed up for Mrs. Jester’s class. The other likes live classes, but wants to limit his time in live meetings. I’m hoping to get him into Clover Creek. DO is completely self paced so that might be a better option for some kids or circumstances. Sorry I don’t have any btdt advice, but thought perhaps my thought process for course selection might help.
  7. WHA’s Logic 2 includes debates in the second semester as well as philosophy. It sounds like the course might be a good fit. My dd is loving it! It is taught from a Christian perspective so if that isn’t what you are looking for, then you might want to pass.
  8. Wilson Hill Schole Academy is offering AP Latin next year
  9. I don’t have Rhetoric experience at WHA, but I did notice that Vierra and Baker have different book lists for Rhetoric if that makes your decision any easier.
  10. Personally, I don’t care about accreditation, but I think what WHA is pursuing is a secular accreditation. If memory serves me, it is AdvancEd. I guess there are parents asking for it or they wouldn’t bother.
  11. I've used WHA and Schole for Latin, but not at the LFC level. Both are great options! My dd switched to Latin Readings at Schole from WHA because of a scheduling issue. The Schole class is wonderful and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it but I think more depends on the teacher than the school and Mr. DuBose is retiring. The environment in Mr. DuBose's class is like a tutorial. They are on webcam the whole time and there are only two or three students in the class. They do a lot of sight translation and the class time is really productive. Mr. DuBose will say things like, "I've noticed you made the same grammatical mistake twice. Here is what you need to be watching for. . ." WHA's LA 2 and 3 classes were run differently. There are more students per class. They use the chat box a lot which is in contrast to Mr. DuBose's class with no chat. It is a much more social environment at WHA. My dd doesn't have a chance to get know the other two kids in her Schole class. They both use the same curriculum so you could switch from one school to another without trouble if for some reason you wanted to change in a future school year. Both have been very effective in helping my kids learn Latin. We have had great experiences with all of the teachers we have had (Hensley, Coll, and DuBose). I wish I could help with the elementary level but thought I would chime in and see if this might help a bit.
  12. I think asking Mr. Lawrence directly for parent e-mail reference is a great idea! When we were first considering Latin at WHA, Mrs. Hensley gave me a student’s e-mail and my dd emailed back and forth with her. It helped us decide this was the right switch to make and as a bonus my dd became friends with her and they have even met up irl.
  13. We also just joined the intro class with Mrs. Lange. She did a great job of bringing my son up to speed. At least this year while she is building her school, she seems open to adding new students.
  14. I would definitely check directly with the teacher. I haven’t had this situation arise, but have found the teachers to be understanding in general. I would hope the rule would be bent for this, but not for a vacation.
  15. RootAnn, that description of Pre-Calc sounds amazing! That is basically how Schole's Latin 4 is run as well. There are only 3 kids enrolled and one never comes on Thursdays so there are only two or three kids in the class each session. The tutorial environment is so time efficient with lots of sight translating and on the spot corrections like, "I noticed you missed that grammatical construction twice just now. Be looking out for this. . ." My dd doesn't have a lot of homework for the class, but is still learning a lot and just as important, loving Latin.
  16. This school year is disappearing here! We are in the middle of a move across country and WHA classes are keeping two of my kids on track in the midst of chaos. Here goes: GC 3 at WHA: This class has been a lot of fun for my daughter. She tries to persuade everyone she knows irl to take a Mr. Etter class. She is definitely challenged to think through issues and develop an opinion, and not just memorize lots of history facts. Logic 2 at WHA: This class continues to be stretching and dd is loving it! Geometry at WHA: We are still really happy with this class and Mrs. Smith's ability to guide students through Jurgensen. Logic 4 at Schole: Incredible, but sadly this is the last year for this teacher, so I don't know what next year will be like. Latin 2 with Mrs. Coll at WHA: My son is enjoying this class. Mrs. Coll is so nice and understanding! Logic 1 at WHA: This has been an easier, but fun class for my son. (I don't think it is easier for everyone, but ds is mathy.) They use the Nance text and he enjoys Mr. Martin's teaching style. GC 1 at WHA: Mrs. Bailey has a very warm teaching style and seems to care that her students are successful as they read hard texts.
  17. I remember that class from when my dd had Mr. Etter for GC 1. It was so much fun that some of my younger kids wanted to watch the archive! My dd took Logic 1 with WHA and they also use the Nance textbooks so your child should be in the same boat as the WHA kids. Kreeft is a big step up; Logic 1 was easy in comparison to Kreeft. I'm pretty sure that Kreeft textbook is what Patrick Henry College uses for their logic gen ed! I have a 7th grader taking Logic 1 this year and I'm considering giving him a year "off" before taking Logic 2 after seeing the class.
  18. Mirabillis, this doesn't address your AP science question, but I learned from Mrs. Stublen that she has had some students self study for the BC portion and do well in her AB class. I'm not sure if that is something your child would be interested in, but it is an option.
  19. I agree with RootAnn. I greatly respect the Barrs, but for my language loving dd, it wasn't the best fit. It was taking more time than I thought was balanced. She is thriving with the Latin Alive series 2 and 3 at WHA and 4 at Schole due to scheduling issues). Her stress level is low, she still has medals on the NLE and desires to take AP Latin next year with Mrs. Hensley at WHA. Switching for us was the right decision.
  20. My son had Mrs. Salmon last year for Latin 1 at WHA. It was a good class and prepared him well for this year. Prior to that he had LFC A and most of B at home. I would not bother with C, but would go ahead and move into Latin 1. Latin 1 starts from the beginning and doesn't assume previous knowledge so one wouldn't be behind jumping in there. I agree that Mrs. Salmon is very organized and gives the kids lots of practice in class with the fundamentals of Latin so that they have the tools to move on and be successful.
  21. For Logic 1, if you are okay with the Nance textbook which is clearly written by a Christian and an opening prayer usually from the Book of Common Prayer, then I'd guess the class would be ok. If in doubt, I'd try to look at the textbook and then you could always e-mail the teacher. Logic 2 focuses more on philosophical ideas and is more deeply saturated with a Biblical worldview of the purpose of mankind so I'd guess it is less of a fit for a secular homeschool family. For example, a recent discussion board asked for a position on an issue and then the student was to explain what the Bible said about it. I hope you find the right fit for your kids!
