  1. I've had PCOS since about the age of 13. Doc put me on BC to regulate, but that really messed up my system. I found that the only way I am able to lose weight is to go very very low carb. I've lost 40 lbs on multiple occasions with this method. I think it may have something to do with PCOS and insulin resistance as others have mentioned above. My cycle regulates beautifully when I keep the weight down, but as soon as I start gaining, the cycle is thrown out of whack. Paleo is a great option for a PCOS friendly diet.
  2. Last year my dd6 fell in love with Renee Raudman's reading of The Railway Children. She listens to it over and over and over. The problem is she now refuses to listen to anything else, especially anything narrated by a male. This is making it very difficult for me as I wanted to use the SOTW audiobook this year as part of our history curriculum. Anyone else have this issue where dc gets stuck on a particular narrator or book? Tips? Ideas to wean? Allow the indulgence?

  4. Congratulations to your son! For those of you who have kids who play chess competitively, do you have any tips as far as resources/books/websites that you recommend. My dd6 learned to play from a stellar chess player(family member who isn't around often) and I do not have the strategy skills/knowledge(beside knowing the basic moves) to teach her and she is begging to play.
  5. My dd6 is still young and fairly slow at reading quranic script, so our memorization routine is done completely orally. I recite the ayah(verse) to her and she repeats it back to me. We continue until each verse is perfected with all of the correct rules of tajweed applied. Once all of the individual verses of the surah are memorized, she connects all of the verses together to complete the entire surah (chapter). She is also responsible for knowing the order of the chapters. So when she recites she starts from the final surah (114) and works her way backward until she reaches the last verse of the surah she is currently memorizing. There are many different methods of hifz(memorization of the quran) and they vary by culture and geography. Some cultures use a tablet(video posted above) where they write down the portion to be memorized each day and then erase it once it is memorized and then continue on to the next portion. Many people now can just use a copy of the mushaf (a printed copy of the quran) and memorize by listening to a qari (reciter of quran) and following along in their mushaf. The one thing that you will find consistently among those who memorize quran is that they have a qualified teacher who is certified (through the ijazah process) in tajweed (the science of the recitation of the quran). This is part of the oral tradition of the quran, and the legacy of its preservation is through it being passed down orally from teacher to student. The cadence of the quran really makes it easy to memorize.
  6. This is completely false. Millions of muslims across the globe memorize the entire quran and also recite the entire Quran from memory during prayer in the month of Ramadan. Many muslim children spend a couple years memorizing the entire quran during their youth. The preservation of the quran is not through the text but through the oral tradition of recitation and memorization. If all of the quranic texts on earth were destroyed, it would not impact the preservation of the quran because there are literally millions of huffaz(memorizers of the quran) in the global muslim community.
  7. My dd(6) had similar complaints so we took her to see the ped. She was referred to the cardiologist who did a bunch of tests and confirmed that everything was ok with her heart. He said it was a type of joint pain and said that the pain would persist until her teenage years due to growth. He described the pain as being similiar to the sensation of hitting your funny bone. The vibrating pain can actually be quite painful and he suggested a pain reliever for easing the discomfort.
  8. My daughter has similar issues and as momacacia mentioned upthread, Ramiel Nagel's book Cure Tooth Decay has been a huge blessing for us. We follow the protocol outlined here for the most part, and it's been great for dd. She's been doing Cod Liver Oil, bone broths, no sugars/breads/rice for almost four years now. She is healthy(by the grace of God) and teeth have improved greatly since introducing the dietary changes. As far as the different types of broths go, all have vital nutrients, but grass-fed beef is one of the best as momacacia mentioned. Also, if you want your chicken stock to gel, add in chicken feet. This will create a very nicely gelled chicken stock. Fish stock and shrimp stock are also extremely powerful in healing teeth decay, and they do not taste as horrible as they sound. They are also relatively cheap to make since fishmongers usually will give you fish carcasses and heads virtually free of charge. If you do a fish stock make sure to use the head as it is rich in iodine and other nutrients that help with teeth healing.
  9. I loved the scene with Sasha on top of the walkers! Father Gabriel really is getting obnoxious. I cannot wait to watch the spinoff this summer. AMC really does have some of the best shows on television! Madmen, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Killing. Anyone planning to watch TURN:Washington's Spies?
  10. Great article. Really needed this advice! Thanks for sharing.
  11. UmSami, I'm so so sorry to hear this. :grouphug: :grouphug: "For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease" (Quran 94:5).
  12. My mom had a power port placed for chemo around three years ago. Doc said it is good for five years, and it requires flushing every three months approximately.
  13. Just ordered! So thrilled with the total cost and the free shipping. I even bought a few extras to give to other homeschooling families because the prices were too good to resist. Thanks Peace Hill Press!!
  14. Greetings All, DD is five years old and I'm so thrilled to have found this WTM community for our first year of homeschooling. I have definitely been lurking for sometime reading all the advice and info in the various forums. I look forward to connecting with more of you as I am sometimes overwhelmed and subsequently paralyzed by all of the information/curriculum choices out there and the constant fear of picking the wrong one. For our K5 year we are doing Handwriting without tears MUS Alpha SOTW 1 Finishing up OPGTR Arabic (Reading & Verse Memorization) and of course we are voraciously working our way through the local library shelves!
