  1. Yep, it specifically states that homeschool expenses are not deductible. However, school educational professionals are allowed credits for money that they spend out of their pocket that is not reimbursed by federal or state funds.
  2. I have used Rod and Staff from grades 1 and almost finished with 8. We are moving into Dolciani's Algebra series. Kinda looks and feels like Rod and Staff to me. DISCLAIMER: I have not started using it yet. I'm still collecting these out of print books. But, I have enough of them to know it is very similar to what we have been using.
  3. Joan, My copy of the Teacher's Edition and Solution Key are both "Copyright 1965, 1962." This is for Modern Algebra Structure and Method Book One. Which one do you need a copy of the title page, etc? The teacher's book or the solution key? Thanks for all your work, Mary
  4. I remember that you have very young children. There is plenty of time for HOTAW and HOTMW, save them for late middle school or early high school. Use this time with your young ones to thoroughly enjoy the SOTW's - no need to rush. History is still one of my children's favorite subjects. If I had tried to plow through it when they were 8 and younger, I'm afraid I would have completely lost them. Now, I may have completely misunderstood your post. Perhaps YOU are wanting to read these books for yourself and it has nothing to do with where your children are in history. In that case, I would also say to take your time thorugh these books. IF it feels like a chore to read any book, then you are getting little out of it. Personally, I read a few pages at a time and think upon those history facts for a while. Then, I delve back in and read a few more pages. Wishing you all the best,
  5. I have thought about taking myself through Algebra I, before trying to muddle through it with my daughter. I'm going to step up to the plate and start working through the first year of Algebra. I'll try to stay a few steps ahead of her. My husband is a mathy kinda guy, but I hate to trouble him after a long days work. Not to mention, he is already teaching them Latin, Bible, PE and sometimes Physics. That leaves me with Math, English, History, sometimes Physics and other dribble that I decide to add into our day. Thanks for the push to jump into the water!
  6. Amazon. I have also purchased from Abe books (terrible results). Currently on Amazon, there is a 1973 Modern Algebra and Trigonometry Solution Key that is by Sorgenfrey, Wooten and Dolciani, I think they are asking $103 - absolutely ridiculous. However, it is for the NEW EDITION, not the revised edition from the early '70's or the original 1960's. They misspelled solution and have a misplaced 'j' in the word.
  7. For those of you who own the solution keys to the Dolciani texts, how often do you refer to them? Frequently, sometimes, or never? Are the teacher text books with the answers enough? I have had success in obtaining two levels of the Dolciani solution keys, but am having a beast of a time finding the other two levels. The ones that I do have are in pristine condition and appear brand new (as new as a 1965 book can be.) This lends me to think that teachers never needed the solution key. If I were Jane in NC, I would have a blast solving the problems on my own and double checking the solution key to make sure the authors and editors got it right. But, alas, my algebraic skills are in the trenches and I feel that I MUST have the solutions! Or do I? I'm now at a crossroads of deciding to call off my hunt for the remaining solution keys, telling myself that I can figure out the equation if it is the last thing that I do. Or, persevering until the end when the other two are located, purchased, shipped and in my hands. Thank you in advance!!
  8. Thanks for posting this. I saw it in my PM box. Did not follow the link. Thought I would check on the General Board first.
  9. Oh, okay! I got it now!! Yes, the teacher's editions do have answers to the oral exercises - not solutions to the exercises, just the answers.
  10. Joan, I so desperately need the 1965 Algebra and Trigonometry solution key. I hope we can find a way to legally diburse amongst ourselves. I also need the Geometry solution key, 1963, 1965. I have a 1965 Modern Algebra Solution Key, a 1970 Modern Algebra Solution key, a 1973 (new version) Modern Algebra and Trigonometry Solution key (I really wanted the 1965!!) and the Modern Intro to Analysis, Solution key. If anyone has any ideas, pass them our way!!
  11. My 13 yo daughter was just diagnosed with Type 1 in October 2009. It began with excessive thirst - 2-3 gallons a day of water. I knew this because we use a Brita filter pitcher. I would keep track of the amount of water each day so that I knew when to change the filter. Frequent urination - We could not run errands without stopping on the way to the store, stopping at the restroom as soon as we got to the store, etc. Extreme weight loss - She lost a LOT of weight before she was diagnosed. I wish I would have picked up on the two earlier signs much faster. Her breath smelled sweet, like fruit. I remember having her go back and brush her teeth a second time, thinking that she did not do a proper job in the beginning. She would eat more food than her father. She was ALWAYS hungry. She would have bouts of headaches, stomach pains, etc. All related to having high blood sugar. Your doctor will be able to do a quick blood test to see what your son's level is. Or, do you know anyone with a blood glucose meter? It just takes a prick and you could see what his fasting blood sugar is in the morning before he eats. Anything above 126 - see the doctor. I think that ADA has recently changed the numbers to reflect lower levels. It may be around 100. Our daughter was 476, and I have heard of numbers up into the 700's. On a cautionary end note, if your child is vomiting, headaches, becomes listless, rush him to the emergency room. Praying that there is not another child diagnosed with diabetes.
  12. Amazon, ABE and various small used book stores are where I have found most of my books. Google "used books" and it will pull up some major internet book places, but also book stores that are local to you. When I googled used books in my area, it brought up a local used book shop that carries old and new textbooks. They are not a store front, but a mail order/internet type of business. I purchased all two of their Dolciani 1960's. I would highly suggest looking locally. They will be able to speak with you directly on the phone and Iwas able to specifically ask them to describe the cover to me before I made a purchase. This insured that I would probably get what I was looking for. Just a quick note, I did see a 1965 Teacher's Edition of Modern Algebra, Structure and Method, Book One on Amazon last night. I think it was around $30 or $40. I don't know who the seller is, but you could email them questions to make sure it is what you need. I have dealt with people who either won't answer questions about their book, OR tell me that the book is exactly what I am looking for. When it arrives, it is an 80's book and not at all what I wanted. The hassle to return these books is enormous. Some book sellers are easier to deal with, others are just a pain in the neck. Amazon is easier to get your money back if there is a problem. The sellers on ABE are going to refund you the purchase price of the book but not the postage. So, if you pay $4.00 for the book and $3.95 for the postage, it will cost you more money to send the book back. Try to deal with Amazon or local book stores if at all possible. I have spent a lot of time looking for these books. I know it took Beth in Central TX almost 6 months to find everything. It could very well take me a year!!! Once I have everything purchased and the sets together, I will make some notes, ISBN's, ASIN's comparisons, etc., about things I have learned on the way. Until then, Beth has listed a lot of helpful information, and this is what I use to find my books. You may want to read through her post. Best of luck.
  13. You can find these books, it just requires diligence! I have been at this for 6 weeks and have found most of what I need. There are still a few teacher's editions or solution keys that I need to finish complete years. After all this work, I only have two years complete, and only need three more items to finish the other two years. Of course, during this journey, I have wound up with other editions/publication years that have somehow matched up. So, now I have two complete sets for year 1 and various teacher's editions and student books for other years. Sometimes I return them to the seller, other times, I just bite the bullet and hang on to them. Once I have finished completeing each year, I willl have a couple of complete sets that I will be selling. and various teacher's editions, solution keys and student editions. You are right, this is hard work!
  14. This book was first in print when I toilet trained my oldest son (you figure out how old he is now!!) I was a young mom and believed everything in print. I followed the directions to the "T", and he was NOT toilet trained in less than a day. However, I was not going to give up, so I went at it for two more days and he was completely trained. I used it again on my oldest daughter a couple years later, and then 13 years later used the same method on my next daughter and a couple years later on my twin sons. It works, but not in a day. If they are not developmentally ready, you could waste weeks on it. IF they are ready, it will truly take a few concentrated days. My oldest son was 18 months, my oldest daughter was 24 months, my next daughter was 26 months, the twins were 18 months. Different levels of development. Best of luck!
  15. I am new to the arena of older Dolciani books. I have a copy of the Algebra Structure and Method, by Wooten and Dolciani. It is definately high school. The elementary algebra has been listed as college level on some of the used book sites that I visit. Not sure if it is accurate. Good luck in your search for these books! Joyfully, Mary
  16. I have used unbleached flour and freshly ground flour from soft white wheat berries. They both provide fluffy cinnamon rolls. I'm off to make some for tomorrow. If Quiver had a dollar for everyone who is making her cinnamon rolls today, she would be a wealthy woman!!
  17. Lucky you! I recently purchased an Algebra book in "acceptable" condition for $1.00. I thought that it would be fine for one of the twins to use. When it arrived it was in pristine condition and was a 1968 teacher's edition. It had been advertised as a 1970 student book. But for $1, I think it will work somehow! This is my only true bargain out of many botched purchases.
  18. Another tidbit of information to further complicate our search for these books: There are 1970's (1970, 1972, 1973 etc) Modern Algebra: Structure and Method books that are printed with REVISED EDITION and NEW EDITION. Even though they are printed in the same year, the teacher's books and solution keys will not match up with the student text book.
  19. How do I know this? I ordered "Modern School Mathmatics: Structure and Use for grade 8 and received "Modern School Mathmatics, Structure and Use" for kindergarten. The book is oversized and has picture pages. The seller refunded my money. I also ordered a solution key for the grade 8 book and received a solution key for the 6th grade book. The seller will refund the book, but not the postage. A crisp, clean, Geometry book is held together with tape and has writing on most pages. Searching and buying Dolciani's books is nearly pushing me over the edge!!:willy_nilly:
  20. My daughter took harp lessons for two years and we rented the harp from the instructor. Is this an option? Our daughter no longers plays the harp, she decided to return to the piano. Harps are so EXPENSIVE! So glad we didn't buy one. One of our boys wants to learn violin. I'm renting an instrument again.
  21. I just bought this for one of the twin's 12th BD. I purchased it at Radio Shack and paid $20 MORE than the Amazon deal!! Ughh...I should have checked here first!!
  22. I have a relative who says "li-bary" instead of library. Drives me crazy. I have even overstated the word, "You want to go to the library?" She will nod and say, "yes, I want to go to the libary." I have an instructor with an Master's Degree, who will talk about work and the small "cuticle" that she has next to the restroom. She means cubicle. They may as well scratch their fingernails on a chalkboard and it would be all the same to me.
  23. Thanks for everyone's help! I have managed to piece together one year with student text, teacher's edition and solution key. Unfortunately, it is not the year we need right now. This is going to take a LOT of time.
