  1. I've heard about Snap Circuits on the boards, but until today had no clue what they were. I'd like to purchase a set for my kids (6 &4), but I'm not sure what I need. It appears there are a lot of different options with a lot of different price points. The Snap Jr. set is $22 on Amazon, it looks like this set comes with instructions for 100 projects. My son is the type of child who will go through the book and do every single project, after he's done he'll likely want to experiment on his own. He had a chance to play with a set today and hated to have to quit playing with it. What would you recommend as a starter kit? I'm leaning toward starting with the junior kit and then adding to it later. Is this the type of thing that I would want one set per child?
  2. I own the Snap Circuit Student Guides (yes, I made a mistake and thought I needed each level) and I also bought the Teachers Guide. I was hoping to find a clear chart that said Read Chapter 1 and complete Projects 1 - 45. Read Chapter 2 and complete Projects 46-77. That sort of thing. Has anyone actually seen such a thing in the past? I'd rather not re-invent the wheel but if I don't put some sort of limit on my son he will read chapter 1 and complete all the projects then go back to reading again. Thanks.
  3. I am going to be getting my boys a Snap Circuits set for Christmas. Unless someone here convinces me otherwise I was planning to get the Snap Circuits Extreme SC 750. How do you store your Snap Circuits? Is it ok to store them in a plastic bin or do I need something like the Custom Storage Case? What about the battery eliminator, is that something I will want to have? Thanks!
  4. I'm thinking of getting Snap Circuits for my son for Christmas. In reading the reviews I saw that it doesn't include information about how and why the different diagrams work. Can anyone recommend a book - up to a 6th grade reading level - that would explain more about electricity and would be a good companion to Snap Circuits?
  5. I recently ordered the Snap Circuits SC300 kit for my ds9 (almost 10!) and I'm wondering if anyone has used it for "real" school and not just for fun. DS is always complaining about having to do schoolwork, so I started trying to think of a way to incorporate the SC kit into our curriculum, as sort of an "end of the day fun subject." Has anyone ever done anything like that? If so, did you incorporate specific books or videos into the curriculum? I would really appreciate some advice about this! Thanks! :) Cat
  6. We're about to updgrade our Snap Circuits 100 kit. Dd8 is frantically All About Electricity right now. We can get upgrade kits that go up to levels 300, 500, and 750. Has anyone gotten up to these levels? Is it worth it? Is there some point at which there isn't much educational payback for the investment?
  7. Does anyone know of some free info on electronics that uses Snap Circuits? I'm looking for something that would walk a kid through what the different components are and why the circuits work the way they do. Also if anyone has used the Teacher's Guide and study materials that Elenco sells for Snap Circuits and could provide a review, I'd appreciate it.
  8. I bought my kids the Snap Circuit Jr SC-100 for Christmas and it was a huge hit. My son now wants to use his $50 in xmas money to buy another one. Can anyone recommend favorite kit for less than $50?
  9. Amazon will be selling Elenco Snap Circuits Green - Alternative Energy Kit in a Holiday Lightning Deal today at 3:00PM Eastern (12:00PM Pacific). This kit has excellent reviews on Amazon and we have enjoyed the other Snap Circuits kit we bought a few years ago. While I do not know what the price will be for the lightning deal, it will certainly be less than the current price of $44.62. Just be aware that quantities are limited and you must purchase through the Holiday Lightning Deal page to get the special price. Note that you will be competing with the Guheerts for this deal! ;) Finally, if you want to get free two-day shipping on this, you can sign up for Amazon Mom, which gives you free Amazon Prime for a minimum of three months. (So far we have qualified for a total of 9 months of Amazon Prime this way and we hope to extend that the additional three more months that are available.) ETA: I see that Amazon has Snap Circuits Extreme SC-750 for $72.77 right now for those that may be looking for this kit. I think that's a pretty low price.
  10. I know nothing about them but hear they are wonderful. I'd like to buy a kit for my just turned 8 yo. Any suggestions? I went on Amazon and sorted by "avg. customer reviews" and came up with SC-300. Help please?
  11. I haven't seen them yet, although I know many on here like them. What do you do with them, exactly? (I think she's going to enjoy them, but they will be totally new for her. I'm getting her more biology-oriented science stuff for Xmas! THAT I understand! :001_smile:)
  12. I asked this question in another thread, but I only managed to kill the thread. So if any one knows I would greatly appreciate it. I am looking at purchasing a Snap circuit set for ds. I am not sure if we should only purchase the SC-100 to start or go with the Student training program for that level or higher. Are the student training programs worth the extra cost? Also, if you by the student training program do you need the set too, or is it included? For example, if you purchase the Elenco Snap Circuits SC-100 Student Training Program do you need to purchase the Snap Circuits Jr SC-100 as well? Is the training program just an addition to the set? Thanks. Danielle
  13. Do you think it would be better to start my 7.5yo son off with the Snap Circuits Jr. set or the Snap Circuits SC-300 set? This would be a Christmas gift and his first time using them. I know he'll love them as he loves all things experimental. In terms of longevity, I'm thinking the 300 may be the best option?
  14. We own the beginning set...the one that has 100 projects. For Christmas we plan to upgrade and buy the actual upgrade to the 300 set (which means we aren't buying an additional set...just the upgrade.) But while we are doing that, I thought it might be good to buy any other additional pieces (I can buy individual pieces) just for fun...for example, we need more whirly dirly things...so if you were to recommend any other "extras" what would they be???
  15. I bought the super duper SC-750 with teacher guides but would like some background information on electricity written at my son's level (he's 3rd grade but reads at a higher level). Thanks!
  16. I'm planning an electricity unit later this year and want to use snap circuits. My understanding is that they come with an instruction manual for directions to creating various projects. (If that's not accurate, please correct me!) What did you use to go along with these? Living books? I'm looking for some kind of spine to give a basic knowledge of electricity. My own knowledge is seriously lacking. (Around 4th grade level seems to be right for him with science and reading.) Any suggestions??
  17. I just ordered the SC-750 with student guides. I haven't received it yet but I'm so excited. Anyone have some favorite projects they care to share? I want my son to be as excited as I am!
  18. I've seen snap circuits mentioned several times on these boards, so I finally googled them. Wow! I think Zee would L.O.V.E. them! So, can you help me out? What are the best sets or whatever to get for just starting out with them? TIA!
  19. I'm interested in getting some of these and was wondering where the best place to purchase these is? What set is best for getting started and which have been your favorites?
  20. I was thinking of getting this for ds, but I know they have a flying saucer kit that he would really enjoy. My question is in the 100 or 300 kit do you make a flying saucer or would I have to purchase it separately? Thanks:001_smile:
  21. He is about to be 10....where did the time go? Anyway, he is into legos BIGTIME, but has ENOUGH. I want to get him snap circuits, in the hopes of channeling a new interest there....which set is best? The 300 one, here http://www.amazon.com/Elenco-SC-300-Snap-Circuits/dp/B0000683A4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1266029040&sr=8-1 Or the Green one here... http://www.amazon.com/Snap-Circuits-Green-Alternative-Energy/dp/B002PLNSRY/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1266029040&sr=8-8 Or, other suggestions? He is also really a huge reader, spends tons of time reading books (thus my addiction here to FSOT), and big into Star Wars. He is also getting a lightsaber. Anyway, ideas?
  22. In case anyone is interested in buying a Snap Circuits set, Amazon has one on a Gold Box Lightning Deal right now for only $29.99. The deal just started at 1:00pm EST (10:00am in the Amazon PST zone) and it's only good for as long as supplies last or until 12:00 PST, so if you want one, you'd need to decide on it quickly. Sorry if I sound like an infomercial, but I've been planning to buy one of these kits for a while, and this deal shoved me off the fence and we're finally getting one. Here's a link to the item page. Look for the Gold Box Deal icon in the top right hand corner of the page and click on it. You need to order it from the Gold Box page or you won't get the lower price. It costs more than $25, so it qualifies for Free Super Saver Shipping, but you won't get it in time for Christmas if you go for the free shipping option. (I don't need it for Christmas, so I chose the free option.) Hope someone else is able to get this! Cat
  23. I want to get ds11 his first snap circuit kit but have no idea what to start with at that age. Any suggestions?
  24. Which snap circuit kit would be best for an 8 year old science lover?
