Our district kindergartens use Jolly Phonics.

It's not an advertised option but you can ask for it when you register. I'm only grading prealgebra so it's pretty easy at this point. I haven't seen the solutions for algebra so I'm not sure whether they're worked out.

We go to the Y most days after school.

Have you looked at Writing and Rhetoric? It's worked well for my boys who don't like to write. It's a little bit of writing every day and the activities are varied.

I would suggest Derek Owens rather than Teaching Textbooks. I know it's expensive, but it's been worth every penny for us.

I'm using Math Lessons for a Living Education but I wouldn't consider it sufficient on its own for a mathy student. I combine it with Beast Academy and use it as independent math/review. It's a unique approach but not enough in my opinion.

We used CLE LA for years, too, and are now using Fix-It and it is going well. It's not necessary to do heavy-duty grammar every year, in my opinion. I'm not using it only because I need something more independent. The tiles were a pain, but we just used a whiteboard last year.

My boys used CLE math and language arts very successfully for grades 2-5. I tried both with my daughter in kindergarten and 1st grade and she hated them. Too much writing, too much repetition. She's just not a CLE kid. I do attribute my boys' strong math and language arts skills, at least in part to CLE but my daughter is getting a great foundation, too -- just using other materials. That's why it's so great that we have so many options!

I love both of these books for myself but my kids don't get into them. Instead, we're using Claritas memory work that includes hymns and that's good enough for now.

Absolutely, stay home. I have an immune-compromised child so we tend to be cautious.

She is bio, the third of four children. She has three brothers (ages 12, 10 and 5) and often feels left out as a result. Her youngest brother has Down syndrome and a history of being very medically fragile (200+ days in the hospital during his first three years. That was a stressor for her next oldest brother, age 10, and that in fact is what led us to homeschooling. The 10 yo also exhibited ADHD/anxiety symptoms but maturity and homeschooling have helped.) She is very sociable and loves her weekly homeschool enrichment program, but at home, her behavior is a totally different story.

I've been struggling with trying to figure out my daughter's needs. She's 8, fairly bright, but is a big challenge when it comes to homeschooling -- not academically, but in terms of her behavior. I've come so close to putting her into school because she's making it difficult for her brothers to learn, but I don't know if that would just make the situation worse. (I don't want to put her into school, either, and she doesn't want to go - but something needs to change!) In reading about ADHD in girls, she has the following symptoms: [*]- talking all the time, even when asked to stop. [*]- frequent crying, even from small disappointments. When she has meltdowns, she can't calm herself and feels out of control. [*]- constantly interrupting conversations [*]- trouble paying attention [*]- having a messy bedroom, desk, or backpack [*]- difficulty finishing assigned work [*]- low self-esteem [*]- anxiety and irrational fears [*]- impulsive [*]- has started lying Does this sound like ADHD in your experience? What can I do to help her? Is seeing her pediatrician the best first step?

I love W&R and plan to use it as long as possible with my kids. My 7th grader is on book 6 (Commonplace) and my 5th grader is on book 2 (Narrative 1.)
