  1. Maybe he'll be so interested/motivated with algebra that he would be willing to put in the work to understand fractions, for example. There's no way to know unless you try! 🙂
  2. Another plug for Boden (seriously, I should be sponsored, I talk about Boden to EVERYONE!). They have lots of bootcut/straight jean options. Expensive, but they last forever. https://www.bodenusa.com/en-us/womens-jeans#nav 🙂
  3. I just don't see the "utility jumpsuit" catching on... at least I hope not... and with cropped legs, no less!! https://www.gap.co.uk/gap/utility-jumpsuit/000493756.html?dwvar_000493756_fit=regular&dwvar_000493756_color=000493756001&cgid=w-clothing-newarrivals#start=1
  4. Oh no! Seriously? I saw that "cropped flare" pants are coming in, too. That's just confusing!
  5. I wholeheartedly agree with this. I was out of place, fashion-wise, all through school. It was miserable. I spent a lot of time thinking about it and worrying about clothes. Looking back, I think I would have been more outgoing, developed more friendships, etc. if I had felt like I fit in. Even as a adult, I think about clothes way too much. I've always said that if I have kids, they're going to be allowed to wear whatever's in style, as long as I can afford it. What about skinny jeans that aren't so thin? Or maybe a few pairs of black ones and dark blue ones? Somehow the lighter blue ones look skimpier. The girls at my rural school all wear skinny jeans or yoga leggings.
  6. Soups might help. You'd still get your fiber and veggies, but there would be an automatic dose of water in there, too!
  7. Men's 5-blade razors are way better than anything for women. The store brand ones at the grocery store work fine, as long as they're 5 blades.
  8. A long time ago, I read that having too few carbohydrates can slow down your thyroid, making you constipated. Maybe have some rice along with some meals?
  9. Thanks guys. No kids in my house, so I'll be the volunteer. I guess I better go "suit up" for some serious battle! Hopefully they're not too miffed that I took over.
  10. My neighbors have 3 cats. They are well taken care of (switched to grain free food, have heated beds, toys, etc), and my neighbors love them more than anything. The neighbors watch my cat when I go out of town, and I watch theirs when they're away. It's really convenient for all of us. Anyway, this time, I noticed that the litter boxes were more full / un-scooped than usual. The boxes are usually kind of a mess, but this time it was really bad. Both neighbors are somewhat disabled, and to make things worse, were recently in a car accident. I think this is likely contributing to the litter box situation. My neighbors are really wonderful people. I don't want to hurt their feelings or embarrass them, but I'm concerned about the cats, and also about my neighbors hurting themselves by scooping the cat litter, taking heavy bags to the trash, etc. How can I help them? As much as I don't enjoy scooping litter, I would volunteer to do it a couple times a week, and to take the bags on my usual trash run. As a second question, should I buy new litter and clean the boxes (which will be a huge task... but I'm not sure my neighbors are up to it right now) while they're away? I'm just watching them for one night and one day, so they didn't even ask me to scoop the litter, just to feed the cats - I just happened to notice the state of the litter boxes. Is there a tactful way to bring this up?
  11. Yeah! You're right, that does make scripting super hard! You then have to think about script vs. reality. I think it's often better to have a general description of what should happen in a lesson, and what the important aspects are. Teachers can then go from there 🙂
  12. Maybe for some families, but not for all. It bugs me that people think easy and scripted is the way to go... because like PeterPan said, it's HARD WORK. There is just no way that reading remediation is going to be open and go, smooth sailing, no effort. That's just not the way it goes. I really enjoy teaching decoding (and LiPS), I find it really fun and an intellectual challenge. If I had no interest in it, that would be a different story. But if you'd like to learn, and you think it'll be interesting.. go for it! 🙂
  13. LiPS isn't difficult to implement. You'll have to spend a couple hours reading (and re-reading!) the first few lessons of the manual, but it's really not hard. Even if you don't do it perfectly (I certainly don't!), it's so worthwhile.
  14. That's what I do, too. Feels safer! My DH is now super nervous about ordering iced coffee in case it's actually cold brew. We did like the taste, though!
  15. A word of caution - cold brew has a LOT more caffeine than regular coffee/iced coffee, so go slowly. You can get a headache, woozy feeling, nausea, etc. from too much caffeine. Thanks, Whole Foods cold brew! 😳
  16. I think sending some to school is a fantastic idea. Life needs to get easier.
  17. No, and that's the thing... they can do the addition, subtraction, multiplication, division (kinda), and they're sort of introduced to parentheses. No exponents, thank goodness. It's a weird partial explanation of PEMDAS. It's an Everyday Math curriculum thing, and thankfully I only saw that lesson last 2 days. The kids were really confused for those 2 days though!
  18. Interesting. I guess I should try to overcome my CC prejudice 🙂
  19. I make gluten-free baked goods, but my DH can't have eggs. I hate the GF flour mixes because they have xanthan gum and other gums that make us feel ill. So, I found sweet rice flour on Amazon and it's great! It's made from sticky rice, so it sticks GF things together without needs gums or eggs. Highly recommend it for GF people!
  20. Yowza! At least he was horrified. But heck no, he's not treating you for 3 more months! I can't believe he even said that. You're not going back, right? Except to get your CD, of course.
  21. I'm torn on common core. Mostly I think curriculums are reading the limit of what kids can actually do, developmentally... so I'm kind of sour on ALL curriculums! Do kids really need to know PEMDAS starting in 3rd grade? My school actually does this. I don't get it.
