  1. You probably need a root canal. I've had two instances where my dentist told me he would do the filling but it may be close enough to the root where I'd need a root canal. The first time, it never hurt again. The second time, I was in pain for the following 2 weeks until I got a root canal.
  2. Just be careful about what kind of orange juice you're giving them. Most aren't as healthy as they seem and definitely shouldn't be used as a fruit supplement.
  3. We use this Elderberry syrup, but I'm tempted to try making my own this year. Youtube videos make it look fairly easy. http://www.amazon.com/Natures-Way-Sambucus-Elderberry-Original/dp/B001E8GO6G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380312777&sr=8-1&keywords=elderberry+syrup
  4. Preventative. I try to give it to the kids every day in the winter (If I don't, we get sick every 2/3 weeks. No exaggeration). When someone gets sick, we stock up on raw honey
  5. Trader Joe's doesn't advertise, which is one reason why their products are so decently priced. They also stop carrying an item if it becomes too expensive. I haven't seen organic apples at ours in over a year.
  6. That was so disturbing. I went to a catholic school and I don't ever remember having that much homework. Ever.
  7. For math, the first thing I did was decide whether I wanted to do a spiral program or mastery. That should narrow down your options a bit. My daughter is 5 (almost 6) too and we've been doing Math Mammoth Grade 1. We take it slowly and use blocks for almost everything. We also play a lot of games (Sum Swamp is amazing- thank you to whoever on this board convinced me to buy it).
  8. I, too, had nausea 4 days after conception. I woke up, gagged, and said to my husband, "That's new. Maybe I'm pregnant."
  9. Does anyone have the link to where this article was previously posted? I'd like to see the conversation, but I can't find it. Nevermind, found it.
  10. Did anyone post this yet? I thought this was really interesting. http://themattwalshblog.com/2013/09/15/dear-parents-you-need-to-control-your-kids-sincerely-non-parents/
  11. Good for you guys! Celebrate. We're still on lesson 103, but man, it feels like a marathon sometimes.
  12. It's just some guy reciting all of the poems from the first 26 lessons of the book. There's one song, it's "Old MacDonald Had A Farm: A, E, I, O, U". I didn't find it useful at all for my daughter that's going through the book. I may end up playing it for my son before he's old enough to start on the book.
  13. We've had such a busy weekend that I have a headache. The reason that I'm physically incapable of handling weekends? Because I'm so lazy during the week, I'm sure.
  14. "As of 9:15, the blaze continues to darken. An orange glow remains over the portion of the boardwalk to the east of Jack and Bills. Smoke continues to rise. Crews continue to stream water over multiple buildings." From Jersey Shore Hurricane News
  15. Terrible. I can't stop watching the coverage  . Side note, I really hope Christie doesn't make any "Stronger Than the Fire" commercials.
  16. Thank you all so much. I've been googling/reading up on everything that was mentioned. I started using our old math-u-see blocks for math yesterday and it really helped my daughter grasp a concept she's been stuck on. Thanks, I'm looking into it. I've heard it mentioned before, but I've always avoided anything with the word "project" in it. I'm starting to realize that I can't, because that's exactly what my daughter needs. I've read a lot of negative Winter Promise reviews based on people never receiving their items are only receiving some. Did you have a positive ordering experience?
  17. I was homeschooled through high school, so I was at home. I woke up that morning, my father told me that a small plane had accidentally crashed into the WTC. I was watching the news when the second plane hit. I was living in North Jersey at the time and we could see the smoke from our house.
  18. I've been going back and forth about which to use too. I decided to try Spelling Workout first because it's so much cheaper. And if it doesn't work out, we'll try AAS.
  19. Thanks so much, guys! I will definitely consider all of this. I really like the idea of lapbooking with history and science and just tackling every activity that's included in the curricula we use. marylandhsmom, we have our blocks from using math-u-see last year and I plan on watching every one of those videos!! She's definitely going to love the games. Also, I've been debating over whether to try Draw Write Now for handwriting because handwriting is the only subject that she dreads doing. I do have to say though, I told my husband that the only thing I would never do for homeschooling is Unit Studies. But you know what they say, never say never.
  20. The more I do school with my daughter, the more I realize how different from me she is!! The problem is that I have no idea how to cater to a hands-on, creative personality. She's got a couple months left of kindergarten (We do it differently. Her school year changes after her birthday) and I'm not sure if my first grade plan is right for her anymore. So, I have a bunch of questions. If you have a child that's like this, what do you do for them? Are there particular curricula that you have found helpful? Should I just try to make science and art as hands-on as possible and just let the other subjects be? Any suggestions/personal experiences would be helpful. Thanks!
  21. We've been using it for the past couple of weeks. We started out doing the whole thing, but the little crafts were too time consuming for us. We just do the readings and coloring pages now. It doesn't really seem worth it to me.
