  1. My daughter did the first 40-something pages in the first week and then, I think, she did 1 lesson a day.
  2. I do it by first narrowing it down between spiral and mastery. I really love the concept of mastery, so I used this site to search for mastery math programs and then I read what everyone had to say about them and created a long pros and cons list, taking my daughter's learning style and personality into consideration. I settled on Math Mammoth and we love it.
  3. Thanks so much! I passed this on to a homeschooling friend that's moving to PA soon.
  4. Me too! I saw it on Facebook and I assumed that the article was sarcastic. It was too ridiculous not to be.
  5. My daughter who's in K has been doing MM Grade 1 (Light Blue) for two months now and it's been great. She had a problem with writing her numbers at first, but I make her correct her mistakes, so she's improved significantly since we've started. I say try it and see what happens!
  6. They came this afternoon to replace the entire thing after my father-in-law called them and insisted that they do so. :)
  7. "The CDC link is talking about not putting tape over the main exit hole at the end of the pipe. As in 'don't cover the end of the pipe where the CO2 is Supposed to escape'." Thanks. That's good to know. They came to look at our hot water heater this morning and I heard one of the men say to the other "If it happens again, we'll have to replace it." If It happens again? Seriously? Thank you all for the advice.
  8. We tried Beginning Geography this year and there were activities in it that we couldn't do because they would ask us to cut things out when we needed what was on the other side of the page. Was it just my copy or was yours like that too?
  9. Yup. I got that lecture when they thought my son was going to be over 9 pounds. They told me that he was going to get so big that he would squish the cord and die. He was 10 pounds, 4 oz and he was fine.
  10. Hits OPGTR Adventures in America Math Mammoth Misses Handwriting Without Tears Math U See Printing With Pictures Happy Phonics
  11. My kids don't bother bugs that are outside, but inside? I've trained them to be little bug assassins. That was never my intention, but we just get so many bugs here in the summer.
  12. Same here. Although I try to base it more on time than pages. I give my daughter a half hour and two pages. If it's too challenging for her, she can stop after that amount of time (if she was focusing). If it's too easy she can either continue or work on flash cards.
  13. If changing their baby's diaper in the restaurant was against health code violations or if Starbucks has a rule against such a thing, they should have been politely told so. It's the employee's job to be courteous to customers. Is it a gross thing to do? Yes. I'm a total germaphobe. I won't even directly touch a bathroom doorknob. But people are more important. How hard is it to kindly ask them not to do that in the future and then, when they leave, walk into the backroom, grab a bottle of disinfectant, and then go to town on that table? I used to work at a Starbucks, and our manager never would have put up with an employee being anything but kind to a customer.
  14. I attempt to use a digital forehead thermometer, but it never works for me. My 5 year old usually has to take over.
  15. If you don't mind me asking, did you wait until a certain point in the book to start grammar, writing, and spelling in addition to phonics?? I'm a little confused as to when I should start them.
  16. Memorizing typically isn't easy for her. The first section of the book wasn't easy for her, and I can't say we enjoyed it all that much. I just feel that it provided her an excellent foundation and I'm glad we powered through. She loves the book now. I often find her reading it for fun.
  17. It's different for everyone, but in our experience, I'm so glad that we did the the first 26 or so lessons even though my daughter already knew most of the letter sounds. We are currently on lesson 86, and we still use the poem. If she gets really stuck on a letter, I can say "D stands for..." and she'll finish it.
  18. The most important thing is that your kid knows the letters and sounds from the song. At first, they had my daughter and I frustrated (the consonant song is so stinkin' long), but a friend told me to let her do a silly dance when we recited them and that greatly helped her with her comprehension and enjoyment of it. Or we would say it once with a regular voice and then say it again with a silly voice. Hope that made sense, I have the flu and my comprehension is way off.
  19. Amazon prime has every episode of Mister Roger's neighborhood on it. If that alone isn't worth it, I don't know what is.
