  1. All of my kids had reactions to their vaccines and the doctor never felt that was the issue. One nurse told me it was virtually impossible that dd's hives were related to the vaccine she got the later that day because hives only occurred in .001% of cases. I guess the nurse needs to look up the word impossible.
  2. I haven't read the responses, but I just wanted to suggest taking lots of pictures of the things you do and making albums of them ASAP for him to browse often. This helps a lot.
  3. Im not exactly science phobic, I actually enjoyed sciences when I was in school, but I just find teaching science overwhelming. When the kids were little, it wasn't a problem, just tons of science reading and a few experiments for fun. Now that some of them are older (grades 6-8ish) I feel like I've been dropping the ball. We've just been working our way through lame science workbooks to meet the requirement in a minimal, painless way. But that isn't good enough and I feel bad about it. What does science look like in your house? What programs are good? I don't know why I can't wrap my head around teaching science, maybe because there doesn't seem to be anything sequential or chronological about it, though I'm sure there is a way to approach it that makes sense. I have TWTM and I just don't get her reasoning for the sequence she chose, it seems arbitrary to me and I would prefer something that makes orderly sense to me. Please help!!! I feel lost on this one.
  4. We've had time off for repair guy in the house and mom needs to keep the dog from slobbering him to death. Not the most fun day for me, but I'm sure it was a hoot from the kids' perspective.
  5. We eat supper at the table then watch the movie with dessert. Our favourite is Chicago mix popcorn from Costco.
  6. I'd want my most often used books which are Simply in Season and More with Less but I'm a keep it simple kind of gal.
  7. We live where it's still quite affordable to have a cottage overlooking the ocean, to spend your summers at. We can hop over to Green Gables and Avonlea Village anytime during the summer season. We've witnessed first hand the highest tides in the world and walked on the ocean floor. We've kayaked and canoed and hiked beautiful woodlands regularly. We've built snow tunnels and tunnel slides and snow slides in our yard. We've spent a few nighs in a castle and experienced a world class winter carnival. We hear locals speaking French everyday. We've gone jigging cod in the north atlantic. We've been to a ceilidh. We eat lobster regularly and don't pay an arm and a leg for it. We've toured tall ships and Theodore tugboat. We speak chiaque and franglais. We've eaten poutin rapee and poutin-a-trou, chiard, passepiers and chomeur pudding. We've been to a powwow. We've found granite arrowheads in a lake where we used to camp.
  8. When they just don't know how to tackle it, do you show them how, or put it away to try another time? I'm not talking about kids with LDs, just a regular kid, who usually knows how to approach them, but hits one that just doesn't click. The reason I ask is because our logic workbook doesn't have much in the way of instruction, just a series of puzzles with a question at the top,or a series of questions to answer. is my book a dud, or is that how it should be. I'll be honest there are some problems I'm not even sure how to approach. Not many, but the odd one. The answer key gives the answers with no explanation.
  9. I think modeling it is one factor, but I think it's more than that. I know this guy, a forty-something guy, only child. His parents are VERY hard working people. They did everything for him and when he was grown, they would go to his house and do his yard work, home maintenance etc. while he sat on his butt drinking beer. I'm not exaggerating. So I think we have to give our kids responsibilities of their own and follow through making sure they do them thoroughly. And I think our attitudes toward work are also catchy. If its no big deal to just get it done, then the kids are less likely to make a big deal about it. But then again, I was a very lazy kid with no responsibility. My parents modeled hard work but I was lazy until I decided I wanted a paycheck. I heard my family talk a lot about not respecting lazy coworkers and I didn't want to be that person. Sometimes motivation can come in unexpected forms.
  10. There may still be one or two of mine lurking in my parents basement. Dh's parents don't have any of his toys. They did, however preserve his sister's bedroom as it was when she was living there and all of her toys were still there until she was about thirty. So, it must be a girl thing.
  11. When dd was doing sequential spelling today on the computer I was very surprised to hear the voice ask her to spell boner. Here this is a slang word for an erection. I'm not sure where the developer(s) of this program originate, but from the sentence using the word, I'm guessing it means a dumb mistake. Is this an acceptable word for a little girl to hear where you live?
  12. Yes, it took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out that to go from Vancouver to, say, Japan, one would fly west. I live on the east coast of Canada, so for us the rest of the world seemed east. Thankfully, my kids figured this out much more quickly than I did.
  13. Bacon wrapped jalapeño halves filled with cream cheese.
  14. This. So much cheaper than a slicer and they do a great job.
  15. It's funny. I can sell my first home - where I had my babies - without batting an eyelash, but when it comes to our school books, I think of them as heirlooms! I have fond memories of my kids giggling through certain books, or of the questions certain stories prompted, the rabbit trails inspired by one book or another. And don't get me started the time I read aloud what happened to Cedric Diggory. A lot of these stories have become a part of who we are.
  16. I can relate to this post. Only it's not my grandmother, but my ILs. It is annoying that they cannot acknowledge I have any good qualities that I've passed on to my kids, but I also know that it's coming from a place of insecurity and ignorance so dh and I laugh it off.
  17. Dh isn't done yet, he's hoping to finish tomorrow. I don't think it's that hard, but it's time consuming.
  18. Okay, so our dysfunctional dynamic is still intact, but I'm so glad that we can have a really good laugh about these things when the moodiness passes. A couple of times since our argument dh has made me laugh about the whole thing. One more inside joke has now been added to our very long list. :)
  19. I might go with one that she wouldn't outgrow. So rather than a play house style, just a plain loft bed with enough room under for playing and a desk for later. For now, you could hang silks/curtains to make walls for a playhouse.
  20. This is similar to what I did. Different type of business, but same idea. Dh and I own a small business. He works on site and I worked from home. Eventually, as the business grew, other people took over my duties, so I'm just, sort of, the silent partner, though dh probably wishes I took the term literally, sometimes. Ha! I highly recommend the family business for couples who want to have one spouse at home, if it's at all a practical reality for you.
  21. It eliminates ring worm in people and pets.
  22. This is how I feel, so I'm not dying on that hill. He has corrected all the other mistakes and thanked me for showing him the video. The room is beginning to look great. I've told that to dh. We had a good laugh about how heated things got, so the mood is much improved and dh is no longer swearing now that he's into the groove of the project.
  23. Ohh! So that's what you guys mean when you say chicken and dumplings. I always thought when I heard that, of a pot pie filling with a biscuit top, baked in the oven. What you describe, we call Fricot (pronounced freeco with a rolled 'r') I also make my biscuits and dumplings gluten free - I like the Dunkerkinn's brand - though I likely butchered the spelling.
