  1. My dd needs a little remedial work and I was thinking a copywork book might be lovely. But I don't know what "style" it is. I do know it isn't ball stick or d'nealian or zaner bloser.
  2. Life in the Great Ice Age and a really fun video that is still hugely popular here, Dinosaurs, Genesis and the Gospel.
  3. I left a comment on your blog, and mistyped twice! I can totally sympathize. My Mom was throwing a birthday party for my twin and I on Saturday and we had really been looking forward to it. Lots of family we adore but don't regularly get to see. Rowan wakes up with a 102 fever. And throws up. And is miserable but oh that child........ 5 minutes into my first-born being ill, and make no mistake, she was ill, I wanted to kill her. The whole drama queen act. Unbelievable! Do you remember in the movie Arthur when Hobson did a death scene in jest, grabbed his chest and made horrible death-like noises? (or, insert any exaggerated death scene in your mind) She did that all day. Seriously! ALL DAY and all day yesterday too. Anyway, commiserating with the mysteries of childhood behaviors and missing things we look forward to. My beloved had to stay home with her and I was really bummed. Not much of a birthday without my husband at my side.
  4. The ESV study Bible (lots of notes = extra reading) The LOTR trilogy which I suppose counts as 3 Riverside Shakespeare
  5. My dh got them at 32 and I never saw or dealt with anything like it ever. He should have been hospitalized and was not given the antiviral due to an HMO screw-up. Baking soda packs helped to some extent but it was impossible to keep him comfortable long. I feel so bad for your poor kiddo.
  6. Hi Cheri, For me, once I found Tolkien, nothing was the same again. Once we ran through the Hobbit and the LOTR, nothing else compared. We do love the Chronicles of Narnia very much and there are many books we have laughed, loved and cried over. Understood Betsy is a huge favorite and we enjoyed the Little House series. The thing is though, once you have fallen in love with Middle Earth, you can't really ever go home again. No matter what I read and enjoy the sense of something missing lingers. I wanted the Children of Hurin for my birthday but no one remembered. I shall have to go do the unthinkable and actually buy myself something. I am sure that I could be considered irrational but it is how I feel. As an adult I adored the Belgariad and the Mallorean series by David Eddings, the characters were worth falling in love with even if the writing was not stellar. They were rollicking good fun and I love them. Pretty sure I could read them with the kids too. But they are not rich in prose and image and beauty and blah blah, you get it, they are not Tolkien.
  7. We began at grade level for 1st and 6th in Language Arts, Reading, and Math. Rod and Staff was just making me nuts after 4 years of it and dd was frustrated as all get out. I panicked a bit when the CLE math arrived, there was a fair amount of topics we had never covered. I called the company and they were fabulous. We used the first LightUnit, which reviews the previous year, to teach the things she had not seen before and then moved on with no problems. I was actually going to use R&S for 1-4 for my younger (since I already had it) but when I saw how rigorous CLE was, I decided to just start with it. The Language Arts combines spelling, penmanship and grammar so we got rid of two other texts and that was lovely to streamline. I am not thrilled with the reading but it is very good and I intend to use it until 7th when I can make the move to Lightening Lit.
  8. I almost never buy new. With a small to none budget Amazon's used section is my best friend. I also go to our state used curriculum sale every July which is better than Christmas and CBD's warehouse sales. I also buy on http://www.homeschoolclassifieds.com
  9. They are so wonderful to us. I go online to select materials for the week (or month) and they come right to my branch. The folks there are a delight. I was also able to get a teacher card so I can keep materials out for a whole month with a renewal available also. Even with the main library closed for renovation for some time, I have had no problems getting what I need.
  10. We spent 8 years with a similar scenario. It is so very wearying sometimes. This too shall pass. Take Mommy time outs, then do what you do best. YOU are a very special lady!
  11. I understand and applaud the obsession! I listen to the books every night at bedtime and read them once through annually. I can't help it. Hi, My name is Lizzie and I am a Tolkien addict.:p
  12. Thanks for posting. They are probably well beyond my skills but the kids will have a blast.:)
  13. Hey Amy, Do you carry your stress in your neck and shoulder muscles? I always have to ice those when I get stressed to avoid really nasty headaches. 15 minutes on each side a couple times a day. If it works, you will know it soon enough.
  14. I found the Critical Thinking materials to be prohibitively expensive. Love the Dandylion series, Rainbow Resource has them or Prufrock Press. From there, we went into The Fallacy Detective this year for 6th and are loving it. Thinking Toolbox for 7th then the series at Memoria Press.
  15. Both dc have a helping list to complete by supper-time. Most of the time they get chores done before breakfast. For every chore not completed by supper they lose 15 minutes off bedtime. They are being trained slowly but surely to do these things without my nagging.
  16. CLE Language Arts, Math and Reading Apologia Elementary Science with lapbook and we are reading through all the "Among the _________ People" books by Clara Dillingham Pierson Lively Latin (dd is a strong reader, we did Prima Last year) My Book House books d'aulaire's Greek Myths and Famous Men of Greece 50 Famous Stories Retold gymnastics guitar and theory with Music Ace and a rotating Charlotte Masony sort of Hymn, Composer, Artist study with a bunch of different materials I have put together.
  17. and we really enjoyed it. DD is a strong reader now at 6 and we are doing Lively Latin this year.
  18. In fact, other parents joke that if my dd is on an outing then theirs won't get hurt. An extreme example. She put one foot in front of the other wrong on her 8th birthday and managed to fall doing it and snapped both arm bones! Walking!!!!!! Other than that she is always banging into things that she knows are there, tables, chairs, door jambs. I think she just lives at full speed.
  19. 1st - 7th Christian Light Education 8th Lial's Basic College Math 9th Lial's Algebra 1 10th Jacobs Geometry 11th Lial's Algebra 2 12 Lial's Calculus
  20. Sing N Learn is a wonderful little company that specializes in all things audio to help teach and learn. It is a homeschooling family business run by Sarah and Fred Cooper. They tend to answer their own phone and are wonderful to deal with. I also love Timberdoodle, though ti has already been mentioned. The Baldwin Project is one of my favorite free internet resources and has been such a blessing to me that I am now helping to transcribe a book for them. Another free and helpful site for me has been Old fashioned Education which outlines K-12 with free old resources and great books lists.
