  1. We use IEW and my dd is in 11 and in 6th grade, would you mind reading her biography assignment? TIA! (It formatted strangely when I cut and pasted and the numbers are IEW stuff.) Annie Oakley “Aim at a high mark and you will hit it. No, not the first time, nor the second and maybe not the third, but keep on aiming and keep on shooting. Finally you’ll hit the bulls-eye of success.” Annie had always believed that you should keep on trying no mater how hard the challenge and her life reflected this belief. (1) Annie, the renowned markswoman, was born in a log cabin on August 13, 1860. Her real name was Phoebe Ann Moses but her sisters preferred to call her Annie. She lived in Darke County, Ohio and was the fifth of seven children. (5) When her father Jacob, who had fought in the War of 1812, died in 1866, her mother Susan remarried and had an eighth child. Later Annie’s mom was widowed again. (2) By this time, life was hard and there was not enough food. One day Annie and her younger brother Johnny were walking through a cornfield and were startled when suddenly a flock of quail flew out of the stubble. (4) Recalling the delicious taste of quail for dinner, Annie had an idea. (6) She would catch one! (3) Contentedly Annie and her brother spent all afternoon stacking, tying and setting a trap made of cornstalks. Four days later, there were three birds in the trap and the family ate well that night. (2) Despite the fact that Annie’s family was poor, they always had food on their table thanks to Annie. (1) Annie went on happily trapping until she was ten years old. (4) Following that birthday, she was given her fathers old gun. (5) When she set out hunting, shooting and trapping she ventured farther and farther into the forest each time. (3) Cheerfully selling the skins and birds to local stores she managed to pay off her mother’s mortgage! (1) Annie had never gone to school. Her mother, who was going away for a while, decided that Annie, Johnny and their little sister Hulda were leaving to stay with her friends and go to school. Annie had fun there. She mostly enjoyed school even though she was upset when two girls made fun of her name Moses. One day a man came by who wanted to hire a maid. Annie hurriedly accepted the job on the condition that they send her pay to her mother. The people were cruel and rebuked her harshly. They never sent her mom a single, solitary, shiny penny. (2) After two years, Annie ran away and returned home. (5) When she arrived she asked her mother where her three older sisters were. Her mother told her they had all married and that she had sent letters to her to tell her. The man had never given Annie the letters. (3) Shortly after Annie’s fifteenth birthday Lydia, Annie’s oldest sister, sent her a letter asking if she would like to visit. (6) So she left. (4) Arriving by train, Annie came to the station in Cincinnati, Ohio. And that is where the real story begins. (5) When Annie arrived in Cincinnati, Ohio, Lydia and her husband Joe were happily waiting for her at the station. (2) Since it was the biggest city she had ever seen, Annie was a little frightened. Lydia’s house was on a hill so when she wanted, Annie could get an awesome view of the town of Oakley. (1) Lydia and Joe who had told Annie about the great Frank Butler had an idea. (3)Merrily, Joe told Annie that she should have a shooting match with Frank and see who was the real champion. Annie just couldn’t turn it down. (4)(6)Thrilled, she accepted. Frank Butler was expecting a full-grown man. When he saw Annie he was stunned! He thought it was a joke. Despite what he thought, it could not change the fact that she was a girl or her astounding skill bestowed on her by God. The directions were explained and Frank shot first. Annie and Frank both hit every target until Frank missed the last clay plate and Annie hit it. Annie won that day but she had won more than a shooting match. Throughout her life Annie would say “I won a shooting match that day but I also won a husband.” Recalling that day, Frank would happily reply, “I lost a match that day but I also lost my heart.” (2) Before a year had passed, Frank and Annie were married. (1)Frank had to be at the theater every night for his shooting act with his partner Billy Graham. They had a poodle named George. For a closing act Billy would place an apple on the dog’s head. Frank, who was a better shot then Billy, aimed and shot the apple off the dog’s head with ease. This always brought the loudest applause. (6) Annie watched every show. One night, Billy became sick. (5) Unless Frank had a partner the show could not go on. Frank told Annie she would have to be his partner. Annie had never been on stage before but from watching Frank and Billy she knew the act by heart. Annie did all the trick shooting Billy had done. When it was time to shoot the apple off the dog’s head, Frank made Annie attempt it. She raised her gun, aimed carefully and pulled the trigger. The apple burst into many small pieces. As George rapidly ate the small bits of scattered apple the crowd burst into applause, laughter and guffaw. Annie was now Frank’s partner on stage as well as at home. Her stage name became Annie Oakley. (3) Sadly, one day Frank just could not seem to blow up any targets. He was perturbed. Annie lovingly asked him to let her try. She hit the target the first time. Later Frank told Annie that she was a better shot then he could ever be. (4) Ending his stage life Frank became Annie’s manager and took care of her business matters. And that is how the fame of Annie Oakley came about. When William S. Cody, AKA Buffalo Bill, returned from fighting the Indians he founded the Wild West Show. (2) In it he had Indians, cowboys, elk, buffalo, deer and bears. (4) Meeting Annie in Kentucky, he did not believe she could shoot she was so small. But when Annie demonstrated to him how well she could shoot, he asked her to be in his show. (3) Happily she accepted. Since Annie joined the Wild West show, Frank had work to do as her manager. On a snowy -white horse Annie rode into the arena. She wore a uniform of buckskin clothing and a cowboy hat under which her chestnut colored hair gleamed. (1) Frank hastily threw glass balls in the air. Annie, who was still on horseback, aimed, shot and broke each ball before it hit the ground. Then she got off her horse and walked over to the wall across from Frank. (5) While Frank held a coin between his fingers, (6) Annie shot it out. She could even shoot the spots out of a playing card! (1) Sitting Bull, the great Sioux chief had joined the Wild West Show. Some people were not pleased he had joined for he had fought against them in the war. However Annie thought it was nice that he had joined. (5) Because Annie reminded him of his dead daughter, he made Annie an honored member of the Sioux tribe. He made her his adopted daughter. He nicknamed her “Little Sureshot”. Annie traveled to many cities with the Wild West Show. They even went to England to perform for the King and Queen and Prince and Princess of England of Wales. She did many tricks for them. (4) Leaving England, they went on to France. Then they went to Germany, the Kaiser was too sick to come. (2) (2) Despite the quiet sadness because the Kaiser could not come, she made the massive crowd roar with applause, delight and awe when she shot the ashes off the prince’s cigarette. Many men asked her to marry them. They did not know she was married because she used her stage name Oakley. (3) Oddly, Annie was sent a picture of a man. She thought it was funny, shot some holes through his head and sent it back. She told Frank, who laughingly exclaimed, “That will teach him to leave my Annie alone!” As Annie walked through Vienna, a baroness recognized her and asked her to put on a benefit show to raise money for orphans. Annie fondly remembered the orphans from her mother’s friend’s house. (6) She quickly agreed. Annie melted her trophies and made coins to give to the orphans. The world may not remember her as Phoebe Ann Moses Butler but we will certainly remember her as Annie Oakley. Bibliography for Research Paper Graves, Charles, P.. 2. Dh and I paid our own way through a state college. He went into the army for 2 years to pay for it and I began working full time in my junior year, graduating early to do so, to pay for mine. Our parents helped in little ways. Care packages with cookies and laundry quarters and one or two years they paid for books. We were always welcome to come home and do laundry or eat well for a weekend. (it was a 3 hour drive but we did it often) We went to a huge state college and I feel I received an excellent education. I probably could have earned higher grades were I not working two jobs but that is neither here nor there, I made dean's list and I was happy. DH wasn't in it so much at the time for heavy academics, he has a degree in Wildlife Biology which I always and still fondly term Zoology for Dummies.:tongue_smilie: ( ex:I had to take 3 years of chemistry while he only had to take chem 100) Over the 5 years it took me to complete my degree, especially in the dorms, I saw a lot of kids with complete and utter disregard for their parents struggle to pay for a college education. The four year booze cruise with behaviors I wouldn't tolerate in a million years as a parent. It was disgusting. Dh and I were 22 when we began college. We chose our college, did all the work to get in ourselves, all the paperwork, everything. And when we got there we worked hard because we were paying for it. An extreme example of some of the kind of behavior I speak of would be my 2nd room mate. This 18 year old, cut loose from home, with zero oversight or responsibility, would bring boys home to our room and sleep with them in the upper bunk and then go off to class leaving said boy in bed! That one was a real peach! She also devoured romance novels rather than study and flunked out her 2nd year. Bottom line, I think most kids work harder and behave better when the responsibility belongs to them. At almost 12, my dd already has a game plan to be a pediatric nurse. She knows that if she goes and works at our local hospital as a PA they will pay for her RN degree at our local community college. She also knows that she can both dual enroll and use CLEPS to place out of hundreds of dollars of credits and has already, with my help, looked up not only which ones our CC takes but how many credit hours they award. I like to think it is because we have told her from day one that it is up to her.
  3. I collect them and there is not a one in the house that I would not read again or have read again.(and again) For the kids, same thing, there is absolutely NO twaddle in the house (except from the library that my 11 year old occasionally chooses) but the shelves are packed. Classics children's books, the My Book House series, Landmarks, Childhood of famous Americans, Jean Fritz books, books that were mine and my dh's like Miss Suzy and Miss Twiggly's Tree and Uncle Wiggly and Beatrix Potter and Thornton Burgess. I have all the Lucy Fitch Perkin's twins books that were mine as well as the Chronicles of Narnia, Little House and Anne of Green Gables. I do have and keep things that are "light reading" for myself. I am a huge Robert Parker fan as well as Clive Cussler. I wouldn't part with my Dragonriders of Pern series for anything nor my David Eddings. We are huge readers, but often choose the same books over and over and so, I prefer to own them. But then again, "My name is Liz and I am a book addict"

  5. I am sorry for your friend. The right words will come.
  6. When we did the food intolerance diet last year, we did only reintroduce one item a week and we really found nothing she was intolerant too over a 7 day period anyway. We do stay clear of any food dyes and dairy for the most part anyway and to a large extent, sugar. The facial swelling the first time was 20 days after having had strep. This week she had a positive strep on Monday and today we were in the ER because when she got up her bottom lip was hugely swollen and she had rashes and hives mostly on her upper body and I thought it might be the amoxicillin this time have had it twice in 2 months. Well, we got there and he immediately said there was very little he could do, he had no idea what the cause was, that there was a REMOTE possibility that it was angioedema and that often rashes can be associated with strep. I said but there was none of this last time, it was or seemed independent of her previous bout. Whatever. he changed her meds to erythromycin just to be on the safe side and sent us off to our allergist who basically said the same thing. Now her allergist has upped her claritin and zantac to twice daily to try to get rid of the symptoms while we still have no idea of the cause. I am getting really frustrated. A naturopath might be a great idea but way out of our finance league at present. We only just got health insurance right before all this began happening. (for which I am exceedingly grateful!)
  7. The Illiad, Homer A History of the English Speaking Peoples, Volume 1, Winston Churchill When You Rise Up, RC Sproul
  8. Basic style long and short sleeve and they sell the skirt and yoga type pants if you want them as well.
  9. And as we slowly re-introduced one item at a time, we really found nothing she reacted to physically or behaviorally. I can wonder if it is a more long term reaction but 12 weeks of that on the whole family is not something I would like very much to re-do. :tongue_smilie:
  10. It seems like every since we did allergy testing on my 11 year old her immune system has been toast! Week one they did a back full of scratch tests. Week two they did a 48 hour test with strips of chemicals all over her back. Since then she has had step twice, a viral illness and while she reacted to nothing, she has occasional rashes. The allergist put her on Claritin and Zantac daily to try to keep the skin rashes under control, treating the symptoms since we have yet to find anything she is allergic to. The Dr. said strep can cause "dermatological issues". Oh and on day 3 of the viral illness, related or not, she came downstairs with her top lip and left eyelid swollen almost shut! We started this whole sequence because we were told by our primary 2 years ago she had asthma. Now the allergist says he can't definitively say so as she is "asymptomatic" at the moment. And she remains wiped with illness after illness. Am I beginning to be paranoid or is anyone else thinking auto-immune possibilities?
  11. That could easily be crockpotted. (yes, it is a word, I just made it up my own self) One piece of corned beef, throw in pot, sprinkle over it one pkg Lipton Onion soup mix, spread over all that one can of cranberry sauce (with the berries) Put on low, do NOT open the lid and let it cook long and slow, it makes it's own gravy and is fabulous. If one ever gets tired of the onion, sauerkraut, cabbage and carrot route anyway.
  12. Then that is the most annoying age. Come to think of it, around here 5 was rough too. Well, is anything really easy? Ever? :D
  13. I know TWSS is pricey but I would use it anyway, esp. knowing I will be using it through high school. All the theme based have targeted ages on them on the website. I will share with you that the 1st edition of Bible based lessons were not as impressive as the Ancient and Medieval by Lori and I can not wait to use the US History which are upper level courses. Unfortunately for me there are no Renaissance and Reformation ones yet and that is where we will be next year.
  14. After SWI B dd is doing a class with SICC B alternating with the Medieval lessons. I think they are very well done, esp. the ones by Lori Verstegen and I would now be very comfy just using those.
  15. It has been a long and completely unproductive week. The kind where I start pulling out my hair because it isn't anyone's fault. It just can't be done. None of it. I'm fried, my eldest is sick, the kind of fun, keep you up all night vomiting sick. The little one is loving not having to do school but still does all the same activities we do in school! Strange, weird, odd and likely unrelated symptoms continue. Monday and Tuesday the fever, vomiting, and huge and angry tonsils. I did call the Dr. We decided not to make her more miserable and drag her over there. Plus, when she had strep 3 weeks ago, she had NO fever, NO vomiting, and her throat did NOT hurt. So I was thinking viral anyway. She gets up Wed am and her face looked like an airbag went off on it! Without the burns. Just the swelling. Her left eye is almost swollen shut and her top lip looks like a caricature of Angelina Jolie! I called the Dr. right away. I wait an hour. No change in the swelling so status quo. I call again and they still don't have their phones so I tell the answering service the story and they agree to pass on the information. 2 hours go by, I go work for 2 hours leaving my sister to watch her. By 4 the swelling had subsided but is it wrong that I am really p*ssed at our Dr.????? I mean clearly a strong reaction to something and considering how sick she has been, her immune system is toast a phone call might have been appropriate!!! Anyway, In share all this here because there is no room on my blog today. My dh blogged on my behalf. I do hope you enjoy it.:lurk5:
  16. I could give you scope and sequence as in the TOC, here is a link to that and samples from CBD http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=887500&netp_id=310773&event=ESRCN&item_code=WW&view=details#curr
