  1. Both DH and I are engineers. I would base what type of degree she is looking for on what she wants to do. Work in research? lab work? Design things? Teach? Office work? I wanted to teach.. I loved explaining things, Working out long problems on a white board.lol.... DH works in an office designing systems, he has a MS in EE. Up and coming fields are a place to look at too.. I know too many Civil engineers without work right now. As far as schools, look at certifications for engineering depts. Also look at what type of projects they have going on. I choose my school so I could work on a NASA trip.
  2. I also tend to watch this type of stuff when I do watch tv. The acting is :tongue_smilie: but I'll stick it out till I can't any longer. But I mostly blame this on my dad:D . He frequently talked about "survival" stuff. Wasn't extreme like some of those shows, but talked about heading for the hills if things happened. He was in the AF in the 50s (Korea). I think that says it all. (And I was a late in life child ;))
  3. when I had my twins I measured 14 weeks off (at 14 weeks I measured 28!) and I should have know, because a: I "popped" at 8 weeks and b: was sicker than I had ever been with #1&2 COMBINED... Ultrasound showed at 10 weeks. Fraternals, only family history was on my dad's mom side??? so many said that doesn't count
  4. It's been a while (let's not ask how long lol), but I remember mainly the feeling that my teeth were loose. I had traditional braces for 3.5 yrs and after getting them off... my mouth and teeth felt WEAK. I was sore. I do remember being afraid to eat anything too chewy till I got used to it. So maybe have tylenol handy if she wants it and make lots of soup/smoothies. Things that don't require a lot of chewing. I was excited to eat popcorn without it getting stuck, but had to wait a week or so.
  5. I have bought there a couple times, did you use Paypal? If so, did you send it "personal-gift" or as a "purchase"? If it was as a purchase, paypal may be able to help. I had to forward all emails between us and pics of the items I recieved to show they were not as described. If you paid as "gift" Paypal can't do anything. But HSC does allow you to leave feedback, so even if you get it resolved I would at least leave a neutral feedback so others could be cautious.
  6. I didn't read all the replies, but I remember when my dad broke both arms and was in full casts past the elbows when I was 8. I have recollections of my mom rigging up something with soup spoons and rubber bands so he could feed himself some things like mash potatoes, etc. Things that would "stick" to a spoon. Took some practice, but it did work. lol I think she did it with a fork too for steak (which she cut) etc.
  7. My 3yo twins are the same way. They want to do "exactly" what the bigs do. I made workboxes for them from a rolling cart and filled them with some sorting activities, matching, cutting and pasting, card games (dollar store for those). I also got them some pooh, mickey workbooks from $ store. I print out mazes and dot to dots for them (tons of free preschool ones on line). Having them spread out in the 10 drawers helps. They color while I do read alouds. When we do memorization 1 of them repeats with us. I do some computer time (starfall or pbs kids play). C-Rods and geoboards are great for the boxes also.
  8. I was looking at ordering from bulkfoods . com. Mainly some spices, baking supplies, etc. Has anyone used them? If so, how was the quality? Anyone have another site to recommend? I'm interested in the Agar, Egg White powder, sugar free choc chips, Xylitol or Malitiol sweetner and maybe dates and allspice. I want to make my own baking mixes so I can whip up pancakes, muffins etc. But I want to do it whole wheat, low sugar for some health reasons we have around here. I am also looking for a better source for WW pastry flour if anyone know one! Thanks in advance for any help!
  9. I didn't see the other thread, but I WAS a pretty extreme couponer. (At least my DH said so lol). I only had 2 kids then and homeschooling was tot school for the oldest only. Let me just say, that show is a set up. Kinda like other "reality" shows on tv. I "knew" some of those women from couponing boards and they admitted that they spoke to managers and had stuff ordered for them and some store "rules" were overlooked for sake of the show (like how many coupons per order, sale limits etc). That being said I used to do very well on diapers, health goods, etc. Never free as stores here do not double as much. Then I got preg. with the twins and put on bedrest and couponing stopped. After I had the twins and recovered from my csection and the 1st 6mos of "twinhood":tongue_smilie:, I wanted to go back to couponing. Guess what, I couldn't!!:glare: Due to these shows and "fraud" using coupons, manufacturers started restricting to one per person or 4 per person on the coupon and stores are enforcing it here. I now know my best prices on items we need and get a month or 2 supply when it hits that price and that's it. If I NEED it now I often get store brand. I don't have the time, etc to run around and make multiple trips to stores to use up the coupons. Just a last note, at least 1 person on that show has been investigated for "fraud" (using coupons on wrong items on purpose) and banned from some stores. So don't believe everything you see on tv!
  10. Has anyone tried embellishing these? like maybe fabric appliques or adding a tier to the little girls dresses?? Are they good sewing quality? I would love to dye dresses and leggings to match for DD and then embellish from ALL the fabric I have around.
  11. Just used mine. You have to wait and enter the certificate and password after you enter shipping info. It is on the same page as the cc info. Just click checkout, but be sure to enter the gift certificate code before the cc.
  12. We have a $ type of store here that I've never seen elsewhere. Every day they get fresh produce(sometimes organic). It's next to the library, so I used to go every time I hit the library. I could find 3pk romaine hearts, 1lb of strawberries, 1lb pkgs of baby cucmbers, 2-3lb bags of apples, 1lb bags of baby carrots (same brands as major stores) all for $1@. Depending on season I can sometimes find pkgs of blueberries, etc.We live near a produce distribution center, so I think these are the extras they did not sell that am that they do not want to carry over to tomorrow. I also find loafs of 100% whole wheat bread (sometimes regional brand, sometime sara lee). They also have lance brand indiv. pkgs of peanuts (5 for $1). I also get DH bottled juices (minute maid, snapple, V8) for 2/$1 so he doesn't have to buy at work from the vending machines for $1-$2 each. I know not everyone had $ stores like this, we didn't where we used to live. We also have dollar tree, which is nothing like this. I will not buy the ???? brands, because who knows what's in them and some things are actually NOT cheaper when you compare ounces, etc. I also sometimes get hand soap, coloring books for the twins, scotch tape, gift bags, some craft items (pom poms). I would also agree with some of the above that many of their pens/crayons, etc are not worth it. At the one store I also find lysol tb cleaner a lot. If you have ethnic markets near you those would actually probably be cheaper for produce and the like. I shop at several nearby and get avocados 5 for $1, tomatoes 4-5lbs for $1, bananas for .39/lb, etc. Without those stores I could not feed the family on the budget we have.
  13. Hi, I'm not sure exactly what type of access you need to restrict (time and/or content), but there is software for computers out there to allow access to a list of approved websites only and/or restrict time. Some cost, others are free. You can do it with parental controls in Windows. I would make a list of 10-15 sites that are allowed then make her own log in and try it out. I found that is important, because let's say the child wants to go to lego.com, if you do not input it correctly, when they try to go to the "friends" site, it won't let them because it is friends.lego.com, make sense? So I always give it a spin when adding new sites, etc. I'm not familiar with ipods, but perhaps only allowing her to play with apps on that and turning off the wifi on it? That would work on my android. My kids know screen time is only 1. all morning and afternoon chores/work done (so usually after 3-4pm), 2. Good attitude (we actually have a paper stoplight with names on cards, green light=good, yellow=warning, red=time out, 2 reds in a day and no screen time) and 3. exercise done.
  14. Well, then add in teaching a second language... Dh and I can converse in that language, but the kids were just learning. We used to be able to discuss things in front of the kids in the 2nd language, then the oldest started to become more proficient, more than I realized! He was picking up from not only class, but also our conversations...so... um "Mom, why are you and dad talking about _______ ?":glare:
  15. Not a garage sale, but recently moved, and finally found a thrift store that sells used books...got loads (125 books:D) for around $65 including some for ancient rome, some classics and tons of reading books for the kids! Everyone there was amazed. I just said, well that should last the kids for a month!
  16. I haven't seen this mentioned, but I use Trail Guide to world geography. I got the CD that has all the levels on it. My 2 oldest study the same area each week, so I can read books that go along to all, but the older level just has a bit more in depth questions. This is in addition to history.
  17. I got this this morning, just waiting for my code. They have tons in the children's non fiction History section. Ancients, Castles, etc... Plus some bios for American history, etc. There is also a lot of historical fiction. Now I need to trim some from my cart lol!
