  1. My son is going on a rockpool trip next week at school and that is a school day. Why shouldn't you count a day at the aquarium?
  2. Do you have internet access? If you do then you could try KISS for grammar. It is free and downloadable. My ds5.5 likes the progressive phonics readers which I have put on an ereader (colour is best). They are also free. Good luck.
  3. I tried to quote but it didn't work I don't think sending him to a 6 am sports practice would go over well with my family to be fair. slightly off topic but have you noticed how so many people are convinced that boys have to be less able academically than girls at 5. I know all the research etc but from what I can see most boys are just fine.
  4. Thanks. He's only just starting I think (he is one of those kids who suddenly does stuff and you are totally taken aback). I think I will just keep quiet around my family until he lets them know.
  5. If I could search I could probably find an old thread. My ds3.5 doesn't know all the letter sounds but he knows quite a few and most letters. I was planning on just keeping on with those like I did with ds5.5 who I sent to school at 5 just starting to read. But the last couple of days he seems to be trying to sound out words on signs and labels etc. I know a lot of you had children reading early. Bother really all I want is reassurance that it is ok to encourage him when my family, parenting experts etc will all be accusing me of trying to steal his childhood somehow. Eta. I know he is a very long way off reading but he is ahead of where dd5.5 was and I got disapproval with him too.
  6. I have just read 7 famous five books in a row. These are not classics but they are decent length chapter books (180 pages range of adult size print) without pictures. I think my stepmother is getting him "little house in the big woods" for Christmas so we will read that. I try and read while ds3.5 is in the bath although the last couple of nights he has listened and only asked questions about the book.
  7. Can't help but it takes me back. I still remember my first fountain pen. I felt so grown up. We switched from pencils to fountain pens at about 7 or 8.
  8. Usborne illustrated Greek myths, Boy of the pyramids(from simply charlotte mason), the usborne maze book about pyramids, river of adventure by Enid blyton.
  9. I'm not familiar with the bob books but have you looked at progressive phonics (don't have the link but easy to google). I have them loaded onto a cheap ereader and ds5.5 reads them in bed. Last night he took a pencil and paper as well and copied out several pages. He also reads them to his little brother.
  10. Hi. Just nosy. Do you feel the 'no homework' rule is because the kids do enough in school or to prevent you becoming involved or interfering? (from their point of view)
  11. Math mammoth can be done on the screen according to their info but I haven't tried. Coolmaths4kids has some free lessons that I do like plus games.
  12. My ds5.5 goes to school. They read the reader once slowly with the teacher and their group (2 to 6 kids at the same level). Then their year 5 reading buddy comes and they read it to him/her. Then they bring it home to read to me. By then he seems to be reading from memory. The total time would be 20 to 30 mins.
  13. You could look at harmony fine arts. I haven't used it but am planning to get one of the small units when we have time.
  14. A lot of classics are sad or scary but then they probably weren't written for four year olds. Winnie the pooh - 3.5 Beatrix Potter - 4/2 At the moment my 5.5 is obsessed with Enid Blyton's famous five but my 3.5 hates it.
  15. I just started orange with ds3.5. He already knows 1 to 1 counting and numbers up to 10 so it is review so far but he is enjoying it. I envy your cheap rods. Mine cost over $50 when I bought them last Christmas.
  16. obviously she can't keep taking things all her life - but is that likely? The teacher is taking it too personally rather than treating it as a learning experience as she should.
  17. Hi. Have a look at peace hill press language arts. Maybe you could go through the years he missed?
  18. Over two hours music practice a day seems a lot to me but if she enjoys it.
  19. Or you can print of MEP reception or 1.
  20. My ds5 seems to think 6-11=-5 is easier than 11-6=5. Not sure if this is a sign of giftedness or he is just being ornery.
