  1. I am too...its really annoying. My mother (who still drinks Coke nonstop all day), raised me on soda, and its just killing me now. I am just really have to try to go cold turkey and treat it like an alcohol addiction or something. I can't have any junk food in the house at all! (Plus DH comes home from deployment in one month, it would be nice to lose a few, if ya know what I mean?) :grouphug: Good luck to us all!
  2. We had FROST on the ground yesterday morning... and today its 73 degrees and super muggy... and now everyone is sick:glare: But it is beautiful up here in Upstate NY...the trees are turning and we've had leaves on the ground for a couple of weeks now. I just read in the paper that we only had 20 days over 80 degrees this summer. It was a cool, rainy winter. I really hope that doesn't mean that winter is going to be awful again!
  3. EXACTLY what we were told with DD. But she desperately wanted to "go to school," and we gave in. We took her out 2 months later. The "new" wore off...she came home crying everyday that she didn't want to go to "baby school" any more. She said that she wanted to go to school to learn something and that all they did was put her off in a corner to read "baby" books... (and we had taken her in when she was 4 to be tested hoping to put her directly into 1st grade because we were worried that this would happen, and we knew that she was socially and emotionally above even most 1st graders----after sitting patiently through 3 hours of testing, they told us that even though she tests high enough to move up, they just don't do that:confused:) It was very frustrating. Nevertheless...here we are - homeschooling.
  4. LOVE THEM!!! Funny you brought it up because we just put the MST3000 movie in our Netflix cue!
  5. Earlier this summer I went on an Apocalyptic kick: 1984 Lord of the Flies A Clockwork Orange Fahrenheit 451 Brave New World Anthem - Ayn Rand We - Yevgeny Zamyatin (the 'father' of this genre) We the Living - Ayn Rand Right now, I just started taking a class at the University on Folklore... The books are great - somel of the different and earliest versions of the old folk tales and fairy tales that you've always known. It also includes some modern versions which are quite good. Definitely interesting and definitely NOT for children for most people- better to PRE-READ!!!! Anyway, if you want to know where your kid's fairy tales came from... Folk & Fairy Tales Ed. by Martin Hallett and Barbara Karasek, and Favorite Folktales from around the World ed. by Jane Yolen.
  6. Quiznos and Schlotkys (sp?) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe these two haven't been named!!!
  7. Oh thank you! Great ideas everyone! We have many horse people around and many cattle/dairy farms nearby...I think I will hit them up for their leftovers - hmmmm, might be a good project for the kids!
  8. Well, I just have to say that I was able to pick up Lasagna Gardening yesterday at the library, and I can't put it down. We have very rocky soil, which used to be a horse pasture. It's good dirt, but after trying to till up a small patch last year, we had almost given up. Dh is deployed this year, so I didn't do anything...and he promised to build me some raised beds for next year, but I can tell that he wasn't all that excited about it (he gets back at the end of Oct., and they are slotted to leave again next Sept. -- we have much to do to get ready for winter, and he has a million projects that he wants to get done). So, this book has restored my motivation and confidence! I know that I can get some beds ready for next spring now by myself. Thank you for all of your advice!!!!
  9. I don't know about the ferry, but you can drive over the bridge (it has a toll - it was like $1 when we were there..), and there is parking around the beach are and in town. The hotel is on the Ocean side not the Bay side, so I don't know if the ferry goes over there...seems to me you would have bit of a walk if it doesn't. Oh, and there is a wonderful park on the Bay side that is just on the water called Tidelands Park (right next to the Marriot, if you just want to hang out and let the kids play at some point. Its huge with a nice playground, walking paths, and lots of grassy areas to just run around and get some energy out while you can sit and watch the ships pass by. When the Navy ships are coming in and out of port, the sailors line the sides of the ship in their dress whites while going through the bay. It is quite a sight!
  10. You may want to look around for a D.O. in your area, just as another option. Many I know like to work with Naturopaths and are more open to alternative styles of treating a person. They are licensed to diagnose and work as an MD is, but are taught to treat the person as a whole as well as preventive medicine, nutrition, and Osteopathic Manual Manipulation. I am not downplaying Naturopaths in any way, in fact, quite the opposite! Just trying to throw another option out there for you.
  11. Thank you Dooley! Great suggestions, and I totally agree about Mission Beach. And Barb, if you haven't ever tried one...have a fish taco!!! They are stupendous!
  12. We love Coronado .... lunch, walking around, check out the beautiful hotel... and if you are lucky...some Navy SEALS running down the beach --- ;) Also, someone help me out...there is a lighthouse that you can tour right there close to the city.. ugggh! can't remember the name!!! Have fun!!! I have many fond memories of San Diego!!!
  13. Years ago in Dallas RHD Memorial Hospital was named Dedman Memorial Hospital... not really sure why they renamed it:confused: In Waukegan, IL there is a beauty shop/supply store, and on the side of the building was a sign saying "100% Humam Hair"
  14. Sending prayers to all of our troops! We have lost 4 in our troop this deployment on Jan. 28th of this year. They all had kids...it has been a tough year for our troop. Please keep 6-6 CAV from FT. Drum and the families of the fallen on your list. Thank you for this thread.:grouphug::grouphug:
  15. All that I can remember from my really young days (4-9 years old) was that my father and I watched M*A*S*H and the Benny Hill Show together....at the time I thought that those were the only shows on TV:confused: But later in life... I love Seinfeld, Cheers, and the Cosby Show. :D
  16. I don't think I saw this listed but.. First Knight with Sean Connery, Julia Ormand, and Richard Gere - it's the story of King Arthur and Camelot. It is rated PG-13 for some brutal medieval battles.
  17. :iagree:Absolutely! I forgot to add that! I don't know how many times that being dehydrated has been my biggest enemy....migraines..aches and pains...etc.
  18. :grouphug: I know its frustrating. We've been Active duty 20 years between the 2 of us, and I'm telling you that it is a rarity for things to go smoothly (at least in my experience). I still get upset about the way things are run, and so does DH. You are DH's support, and that's about it for now. It's easier once you are active duty to be friendly with the other wives...and sometimes voicing concerns to the right "friendly" wife can work wonders within the chain of command - but that doesn't always work either and sometimes backfires. But definitely, a wife calling up people never seems to help the husband's position. Your dh sounds like he has his ducks in a row, so he just needs to stay on it and stay on it... eventually things will work out. The pps have given good advice.
  19. I had been getting migraines for years. I did the Excedrine migraine and a Coke therapy - and also tried Imitrex (back when it was a shot in your leg - yuck!). I would eventually get over them, but they always came back. I have to say that the only way I have gotten rid of them is when I ate VERY healthy, took my vitamins, got off of the caffine addiction, excercized daily in some way. Whenever I start eating crappy, drinking soda, food with lots of chemicals they come back. I know that everyone is different...this is just what helped me. BTW these things also totally changed the character of my menstral symptoms - I tend to have WAY less problems with both the emotional and physical problems. Lots of hugs to you...headaches are crappy.
  20. :lurk5: I have been meaning to go through that list as well...I have never heard of a few of the books.
  21. Many many years ago....they used to have $100 hops to Honolulu out of LAX in the off season (summer)----grrrrrrr---can't remember which airline....that was about 8 years ago, before any 2001 and the airlines had so much trouble. But I just wonder if a travel agent might be able to find you some sort of off-season deal nowadays? good luck!
  22. You guys are inspiring! We are now talking about moving up our date on this. If DH gets stationed back in Alabama for the last 3 years, we are going to get rid of everything (except the tools have been added to the books in storage) and RV on post. The base at Fort Rucker has a nice lake with RV sites - and then we can take off on the weekends and holidays. Hopefully without the house payments, we will be able to pay the RV off by the time he retires... ahhhh what a nice dream!!! Retired...no debt...go anywhere we want... well, at least for a while :001_smile: But then, we can live in the RV while we build a house somewhere....ah the possibilities!!!
