  1. I noticed in WWE, she stops copywork after 2nd grade. When do most people on this board stop? Also, why do you stop when you do? Thanks! Hot Lava Mama
  2. and when I was reading the WWE book, it said that poor spelling is because they don't have the "picture" of what the words look like in their head well enough. I got the impression that in that situation, I should stay back (ie: do not move forward to the next level) with the copywork and dictation. I'm not exactly sure how we are going to proceed. My ds is really great at narration, and can put pretty good sentences on paper, but the spelling is terrible. We have made some progresss with AAS, but I think we should have done more copywork/dictation. I think I might go back to the 3rd grade copywork/dictation and do the 4th grade of everything else. Not sure if that helps, but let the board know if you figure anything out! Hot Lava Mama
  3. new that WTM didn't already kind of explain. In fact, some of the wording seemed very familiar. Given that, I am happy that "I" got it because the "copywork" and "dictation" thing wasn't happening here. Just one more thing to try to find something appropriate for them to copy or dictate. I will use it with all my younger kids, and maybe for some remediation for my oldest. If you feel you "get" the copywork and dictation thing as it is explained in WTM, you probably don't need it. Just do what she told you to do in WTM grammar section. If you aren't getting to that stuff, or feel like you aren't able to find appropriate stuff, then I would recommend it. Good luck from a fellow "junkie"! Hot Lava Mama
  4. Can anyone give some suggestions for movies from Netflix for grammar stage: SOTW book 1 (dd 6) SOTW book 3 (ds 9) Thanks! Hot Lava Mama
  5. abstract. It's very hard for them at this age. My dd was the same way. She still gets them confused from time to time. I stopped her 1st grade math progression to work on number recognition for a whole month. With some kids, it just takes longer. If you break from it for a short time, and come back to it, it might be better. For math, instead of trying to figure out the "symbol" for 10, have her count ten things. Then have her sort ten things, etc. Don't worry about the symbol part of it for a short time. Hope it helps! Hot Lava Mama
  6. I understand that LfC A was cleaned up of most of the "errors" that it was plagued with. Does anyone know if any of the other ones were also cleaned up? (i.e.: B & C) It's a fun program, but I really can't handle a ton of errors! Thanks! Hot Lava Mama
  7. go to the library, my dd ALWAYS wants to get some. I always whine about it but then give in. Dd has such a pretty face, how can I resist! I find them annoying for some reason! Hot Lava Mama
  8. it uses a lot of different things...games, sorting things by first letter, cards, etc. It was at a good pace for my ds, but moved too fast for my dd. So what we did (since it was very expensive, and I didn't want to get another program) is that we took each lesson over 2-4 days...depending on what was being covered. That way, we slowed things down, and she seemed to "get" the concept better. We have been very happy with it, and I will use it for my other ones coming up. Good luck! Hot Lava Mama
  9. Home schooling is REALLY, REALLY hard. I also don't think it is for everyone. That said, you should consider the reasons why you want to home school. Put on a list the reasons why you think it is for you, or not for you (do both). You will know from the list which reasons are more important, and you can go from there. If you do decide to keep going, you need to realize that YOU (and dh) are making this decision because its the right thing to do. (just like eating veg's etc. that they may not "like" at the time) Not to be too critical, but have you asked her "why" she doesn't like to home school? Are you putting too much pressure on the reading thing? Quite honestly, maybe she's just not ready to do that yet. If you just drop it for a while, the pressure will be gone, and maybe some more fun will come during the day. My dd was a slow reader, too. I worried and fretted, then just dropped it for a while. Hoping and praying I was doing the right thing. We picked it up later and now she reads two grades above her level. You never would have guessed that since she seemed so "behind" for such a long time. I wish you luck. Hot Lava Mama
  10. Think how much easier it would be to "clean them up"! :tongue_smilie:
  11. each one of you. I only have 4 kids, the youngest two (4yo and 2yo) can be VERY difficult at times. Geez, I thought MY schedule was tough. I couldn't even imagine how hard it would be with more. You ladies are awesome! Hot Lava Mama
  12. which, by the way, is the only thing I used for my ds. He did great with just this, but he is a "mathy" person, and didn't need much else. I didn't even have to drill his math tables, because he "just knew them". My dd, however, was a different story. She wasn't getting it so I purchased the TM and it has a lot of extra stuff to do (mostly using different ways to get a point across) to get a certain concept across. For example, use different counters to do addition problems, the next day, use animals but a slightly different way of presenting the same information. I am convinced she would not have done as well if we did not have the TM. Hope that helps. Hot Lava Mama
  13. so what do you do when they don't listen? Just wondering. I know things go better when I hold firm, but I have a hard time with my two youngest (2 years and 4 years). What did you do if they didn't listen? ie: what was the punishment or action that you took? My older ones seem to know that "that isn't a good choice" kind of a decision when they do things they know they shouldn't. And, honestly, I really didn't have much of a problem with them when they were younger. But my two youngest boys...aye yi yi! What do I do. It seems like some days their entire purpose in life is to make me crazy. I think I need different ways of handling them than I needed with my first two. Can you give any advice? I couldn't even imagine my head would still be attached to my head if I had 6 little ones the ages of yours. I'm so sure "my head would explode!" So...what do you do with stubborn ones who don't listen? Thanks! Hot Lava Mama
  14. World map U.S. map 3 Latin charts cursive alphabet roman numbers food pyramid (all are in my kitchen..thus..this one) parts of speech "what to do when we are angry" (I have 3 boys..thus, this is needed!) using context cues measurements (if I had more wall space, I would hang a ton more!) 15. by grade. I had some things that "spanned" several years, and could never find anything. Now I have bookshelves with entire shelves devoted to only one subject. I can't believe how much it has helped! I don't spend valuable school time (defined at baby is SLEEPING!!) looking for stuff! Hot Lava Mama
  16. and I was very concerned because he had just been discharged from ICU for epilepsy. I thought it was related to that. I spoke with the pediatrian and some specialists, and they all said "ticks" are VERY normal at this age, and especially for boys. And the more attention you bring to it, the worse it becomes. Also, the "tick" changed from one thing to another. All in all, it was about 1 year of different things, then they just went away. That said, I would still consult a doctor just to make sure it isn't anything else. I know how completely "freaked out" it can feel to you (the mom), but you have to try really hard not to draw attention to it. I had to talk to my younger kids and make sure they didn't tease about it. Once I spoke with the doctors, my mind was eased about it, and I was able to deal with it a little better. Good luck. I hope you find out what is going on. Hot Lava Mama
  17. Can someone help me? Is there nothing "fun" out there for Greek? A crossword type or connect the pictures or sticker kind of a book? Anything? Anyone? HELLLOOOOO (she says with an echo) Is anyone here? :) Hot Lava Mama
  18. figured we got the most out of the program. My ds knows the alphabet really well, and memorized the words. But, it wasn't explaining anything. I don't know what all the "," and other marks meant. It just seemed like I was guessing at the meaning of stuff too much. I researched (via this board) some other programs, and many people seemed to be happy with EG. I have the program now, and it seems a lot better. I think we will understand stuff a lot better. I will still go the same route with my other children. We took it slow, and really, really learned the alphabet and all the sounds. I think it will be a lot of help when we move on. Good luck. Hot Lava Mama PS: Still seeking a "fun" book for greek...along the lines of "Ludere Latine" from Memoria Press
  19. We are starting Elementary Greek (after 2 years of Hey Andrew) this fall. I am looking for any kind of "fun" book that I could use with it. (ds is 9) We have the Greek Decoder from CAP, but it mostly covers the letters and sounds. Is there anything out there that I could use? Hot Lava Mama
  20. is improving QUICKLY) a terrible speller. We went through levels 1 & 2 quickly, and are almost done with 3. It's the only program that has worked for him. Everything else we tried would not "stick" with him. He would ace the spelling tests, but it never carried through on his other work. It took a while to "get" how to do the program. Now that we are using it, I think I understand it better. Good luck. Hope you have some success! Hot Lava Mama
  21. instructions for the lessons, and not the "answer book". Answer book, you don't need. I, personally, would recommend the TM. It has different activities to do with the child that is not included on the worksheet. I didn't use the TM for my ds for K or 1st, but he "got" math really easily. My dd, though, was a tougher case. I purchased the TM and it made a big difference. It just gave me more things to do with her to get the concept across. So, I guess it would depend on how easily your child gets math concepts. If it's easy for him, you probably don't need the TM until about 2nd or 3rd grade. Otherwise, you might want to get it if the concepts are not getting through. Good luck. We have been very happy with Abeka. Hot Lava Mama
  22. I just purchased IEW's Teaching Writing structure and style, and also their Student Writing Intensive A. I watched the first TWSS disk, and also pre-viewed the SWI-A disk for the first lesson. So, how do I schedule this for a "just starting 4th grade" boy? I was thinking: Day 1: watch disk and we discuss...walk through the exercise. Day 2: talk about it again, have him do the underlines and outline. Day 3: have him "say back" the story from the outline then write it Day 4: improve the paragraph and type it into the computer. Day 5: do another exercise by himself to see if he has the idea. Too slow? Too fast? Am I missing something? Thanks for your help. Hot Lava Mama
