  1. My ds will be entering the logic stage this year, and we want to do a "biography" book that has information about all the artists and musicians listed in TWTM book. (Logic stage, page 429 through 433 the second version of TWTM). Nothing too complicated. Maybe their name, what they did, a picture or whatever of their "work" and whatever else we can get. The problem is that I am not having any luck finding good stuff in the library for these people. Most of the books are WAY too long to read. Are there any good books that would incorporate many of these people? Thanks Hot Lava Mama
  2. I started WT1 after a bunch of other writing programs for my ds. He HATED writing. I always "knew" how to write, but wasn't able to teach it very well. We switched to WT1 and he did really, really well. I can't even believe what a difference it made. We are almost done with WT2, and I am so sad there isn't a WT3 for him to do next. Amy did a really great job on both of them, and she will answer any questions you have! I know because she has answered a bunch of questions for me. She's very helpful and very responsive. Good luck! 3. I remember seeing it when I was very young. It was about some guy who was sick, so these doctors shrunk down some other doctors to go into this guy and fix whatever was wrong with him. It was an old movie when I saw it. I thought it was called "The Incredible Journey" or something like that, but I can't find it on Netflix. Does anyone know what I am talking about and know where I can get it? Hot Lava Mama
  4. My ds HAD to move to learn. He would not retain anything unless he was moving so I got an "exercise ball" for him to sit on when he needed to concentrate. It worked wonders. He's older now, so I give him some "silly putty" type of stuff to play with while he works. My dd, however, can't wiggle and retain anything at all. I insist she sit still and not play with anything, and then she retains the information. Hope this helps. It worked wonders for us! Hot Lava Mama
  5. What kind of community service projects do your kids do? I would like my ds 10, to do something to temper the "gimme's" that seems to be coming with the nearing of Christmas. We just told him about "Santa", so now he knows the gifts are from us. He is already creating a long list of stuff he wants. We have never had this problem with any of them. When we take them to the store and say "no, you can't have that", it's never been a problem. So, now what? Thanks for your help. Hot Lava Mama
  6. Has anyone used any kind of computer safety class for their kids? I want to let my ds 10 on the internet, but would like him to take a "safety" class first. Also, do you use a filter of any kind? If so, what do you use and what do you like and dislike about it. Thanks Hot Lava Mama
  7. Does anyone know where I can get those glow in the dark stars that you can stick to the ceiling? We want to make some of the star systems on our ceiling. Thanks! Hot Lava Mama
  8. Are those 2-3 hours over and above the "reading" for stuff like science and history, etc. Or does that include the things you read during the day for various subjects? If it's over and above, WOW, I need to get on the ball! Hot Lava Mama
  9. It's great! Even my 3yo can sing them! Hot Lava Mama
  10. the difference between "no one" and "noone"? I always thought it was two words. I have seen it referenced several times in our spelling book as one word. Is there a difference between these? Are they both correct and acceptable? Hot Lava Mama
  11. the eyes and what they do. Specifically, the cornea, iris and pupil, lens, retina and optic nerve. Any ideas? Hot Lava Mama
  12. I was wondering what I should be retaining for my 4th grader and 2nd grader? I am going through all the files, I was throwing out most of it. I kept the tests and quizzes for math, a handful of samples for writing and grammar. That's it. Should I be keeping more work samples? If so, what else? I am talking strictly about the "work" the kids do, not the "permanent records (such as course of study, etc. that I am required by the state). Thanks for your help! Hot Lava Mama
  13. SOTW (any of the volumes) with Diane Waring? Also, I need a schedule that combines MOH and/or SOTW with "Our Island Story" and "A History of US". Anyone? I didn't see anything on Paula's list. Thanks Hot Lava Mama
  14. We will be using Apoligia for science next year. I was thinking of starting with Exploring Creation with Astronomy. Is that the best one to start with for the series? It will be for a 5th grader, 3rd grader and K. Also, do I need the "science kit" that goes with it? I saw it in "Homesciencetools.com" for $30.95. Seems kind of expensive, but if it has all the stuff, it would be a time saver (I would also be more likely to do the experiments if I already have the stuff and I don't have to search for things). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Hot Lava Mama
  15. But, can I borrow your "school motto"? We need it here, too! I can relate! Hot Lava Mama
  16. you are not properly testing the subject area. You are testing something different because "you" will recognize all the words and pronounce them properly (whereas your son or daughter might not know the word). They are testing the word recognition as well as "understanding" what they just read. Hot Lava Mama
  17. Anyone know where I can get a song to remember the periodic chart? Thanks! Hot Lava Mama
  18. superman. He would put his superman costume on several times a day, and tell me, "Mom, the floor has turned to HOT LAVA! I have to save you!" Thus, Hot Lava Mama!
  19. We are on lesson 2 of LC1. On one of the worksheets, we are asked to traslate this: They are preparing. So we start with "I prepare" (paro), change the o to a, then (what we thought) add "sunt" (which we thought meant "they are".) But the answer is paraNT. Why? I understand that NT is "they", but why not add the sunt? Also, same issue with this one. He is overcoming. We thought it was superaest. (change supero to supera....then add est for "he is") Why is it superat? Thanks for your help. Hot Lava Mama
