  1. I took dual enrollment for English at Emory University in high school 11/12th grade. Future english major... But for 9th and 10th honors I remember Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm, A Tale of Two Cities, Wuthering Heights. I'm sure there were many more I don't remember.
  2. Looks really really good! I'm getting braver to do something similar after seeing your pic!
  3. He did enter his college - but it is a huge school. It only suggested our roommates and bridesmaids/groomsmen. :) Most of the others are friends who have moved on from our church or moved away. Some older clients but not connected with his employer... He doesn't even know any of their email addresses. We only have the closer friends' mailing addresses that aren't stored in our computer - just an old fashioned paper address book. Wierd.
  4. we don't have facebook accounts, he hasn't accepted linked in connections yet, and none of these people are in our email contact list either. The only thing I could think was they clicked on his profile bc we did know them...
  5. determine 'people you may know'? My husband let his lapse after signing up. He went on to update it and it linked to about 40 'people you may know'. They were all people we really did know - old college friends, friends who moved away, old business clients etc. He doesn't have contacts and hasn't googled any of them. Does that mean these are people who looked at his profile? The internet is so wierd...
  6. I loved the series! I am glad I waited. I must confess I had reservations about the series early on and wanted to wait until she was done before I jumped on the bandwagon. I didn't know where it was headed. Then, my husband and I decided to have our children wait until about 12yo so they could read them all without getting scared. I'm sooooo glad I waited bc I could read them straight through without waiting for the next book. I don't know how all of you waited! Didn't you forget details before the next book came out? My daughter finished the series a couple of weeks ago. My son is on #6, but he's reading quickly. :) I'm dying to read some books or lectures about the entire series... I'm going to buy Repotting Harry Potter for my bday or Christmas. My library had The Gospel According to Harry Potter, by Connie Neal. It was very weak imo just skimming it though. I am glad I didn't buy it. Any suggestions? I wasn't sure about the Granger books, there are so many. No girl character in children's or ya lit compares to Hermione! We just love her. She makes it seem so cool to be smart!
  7. He has a lot of building sets: 1.Technic - several sets 2.Mindstorms - and several books (he needs to progress with this) 3.SnapCircuits - including 750 (but we can't get it to work w/ our laptop) 4.Engino (biggest set) 5.Knex roller coaster and smaller sets 6.Erector set - large metal, many models set What next? Electronic lab, which one? Fischertechnic? Books? He kind of wants to help his special needs older brother build large Harry Potter lego sets and go in on them together. They would be in his brothers room though and wouldn't really be "his" gift...
  8. Summer reading. The first 2 titles are from a summer book club I started for middle school girls. My children and I have been reading the HP series for the first time. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix 42. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince 43. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - now!! Plan on reading straight through all Labor day and all night :) Waiting at the library: Tales of the Beedle Bard Harry a History, Melissa Anelli The Gospel According to Harry Potter, Connie Neal
  9. My son wouldn't play with Minecraft anyway- he's weak spatially... Thanks so much for the help!
  10. Thank you! My kids want to see if they match pitch bc they are in CYT and aren't the best singers. :) I'll look into a Wii game and Magic Sing.
  11. We bought our 15yo son (with mental disabilities) a Wii for the summer. He loves to play Lego games and but the motion sports games weren't a hit ( but my husband and other son can play those occasionally). He doesn't like his Marvel hero games on the Wii bc they graphics are horrible. High graphics games like Transformers Cybertron aren't even available on the Wii. He knows how to watch his favorite titles on Youtube by copying the title into the search box. What usually comes up are the Ps3 or Xbox games with awesome graphics and he has been wanting one of those consoles. I'm thinking a Ps3 is the better deal. We spend so much money on our other kids activities and our special needs teen has so few interests. I really want to get him the Ps3 for his bday next month in addition to his Wii. He has been having health issues that are horribly distressing as well. So, I want him to have something he likes to do that he can lay down and play... SO, all of that to explain myself and ask my questions! Can you plug both systems into the same tv at the same time? Is the hand control really hard to use? He got the hang of the Wii no problem. Do you think a 160gb for Ps3 $249 is the best option? I'm not sure about used from Gamestop. We tried that with the Wii and it didn't work when we got it home. It was junk, so we exchanged it for a nice new one. Thanks!
  12. I was intensely curious as a child, particularly about history. We would learn a snippet in a textbook or lecture and I would check out library books about the subject. We study history chronologically in our homeschool and use TQ history. I have a HUGE living books library used in our checklists. So, I have come to the conclusion that they don't have the curiosity I did bc they are satiated intellectually. :001_smile:
  13. I like both of Debra Bell's books. Her writing is a mix of spiritual encouragment and academic advice. Her children did very well after graduation - and that encourages me a lot.
  14. Thinking ahead to a family Christmas gift. Thanks for any help!
  15. I can't explain it very well. I'm a believer in the KISS method of writing. I know Miller painstakingly re-worked several of Guerber's volumes into a chronological history series. The content feels very scattered to me, and the typesetting and pronounciation helps slow me down. Mills is just so superior in organization and writing (imo). When my 6th grader is a bit older, he can read them straight through with MP's guides. MP's Famous Men series comes with flashcards for review - a huge plus for us.
  16. My children and I started school today. We are going through logic stage middle ages. We own too many spines. We have many chapter books to enjoy, and we want to simplify our home library. They loved the following: Grammar stage A Child's History of the World Grammar/logic stage Story of the World series Now we want to continue on with: Logic stage Dorothy Mills series (I like Memoria Press workbooks for the future) Famous Men series Rhetoric stage Susan Wise Bauer, The History of... series Spielvogel, Western Civilization great books We do not like and want to sell Christine Miller's Guerber series! We have plenty of spines right? More than enough? They won't be deprived if the never read these? :001_huh:
  17. Evernote to sync lists and files with tablet, phones, laptops and desktop.
  18. I sideloaded K9 web protection onto my daughter's Fire. I had to google how to do it bc there isn't an Amazon approved Kindle app for it yet. http://www1.k9webprotection.com/support/kb/K9177.html She has 120 oop classic and good books on her Kindle. The Yesterday's Classic set sound great. She loves several game apps. I regretted that aspect at first because they played games more than I thought they would at first. Now, they just play once in a while. She watches Netflix on it when she is sick. My favorite feature of touch screen Kindles is clicking on vocab words while reading and getting a dictionary to pop up!
  19. Those prices on that website are just silly. I bought my complete mint 1950s set for $40.
  20. http://www.ihomeschoolnetwork.com/nbts-blog-hop-school-room-week/ I look forward to this blog hop every summer. Lots of ideas. :)
  21. I bought the TI-83plus w/ cable and cd-rom in vg condition on ebay yesterday for $54/free shipping. I found slightly better deals on just the calculator, but I wanted the cable "just in case" we needed it...
  22. Ok great. So, the size is probably ok? It made me nervous that it said 10 and up.
  23. My son is starting high school this year. He is 14 and 5'2". I want to get a really quality bag and I'm looking at L.L. Bean. What do you think of this one? Size ok? He is in a mod. disability class, so won't carry many textbooks around the halls or home. Just lunch, jacket, crafts, binder etc. http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/62852?feat=62851-ppxs&dds=y
  24. I was really inspired by story of Cushla when my special needs 15yo was little. I read to him at least 2 hours a day. He is still moderately mentally disabled, but he has an excellent vocabulary for his iq - shocks every tester. I think it is from reading, but also some educational tv like Magic School Bus. :)
