After much thought, prayer, and talking it over with my husband, we have decided to try our youngest son who will be entering 4th grade next year in a new charter school. The charter school is a Core Kwoledge school based on Professor E. D. Hirsch, Jr philosophy. It's starting out as a k-4 school but will eventually become k-8. Each year they plan to add one grade. I just got done filling out the forms and my emotions are all over the place😂. Mainly because I know it's going to be a transition for the entire family. On a positive note my son said he likes to be homeschooled but he's willing to give the charter school a try. He's such an incredible , talented(piano), smart, and witty young man but he's also very strong willed. This year has been really rough for us. He and his brother are 16 months apart. His brother really needs the one on one attention because of his dyslexia and dysgraphia. There were many days when we couldn't get school done because the youngest was either throwing fits or just being really mean to his brother. He's definitely a kid that thrives on being around other kids. He loves to compete and likes to be challenged. I really do believe he would do well in a good school. A movie first thing in the morning will not work for my boys! Ask me how I know? Been there done that! I have two boys who are 16 months apart. My oldest is a late sleeper. He wakes up between 8:15-8:30. My youngest is up at 7:00. Most of the time I complete math and spelling with my youngest while the oldest is asleep. On other days he's allowed to watch 1 Brain Pop episode, practice his piano, read, or play with his Guinea Pig. A checklist work great for my boys because it allows them to see what they need to complete and it also allow them to see how much they have completed before they are allowed to watch tv.

Pen sorry but I'm not sure oh to quote with the new site. Anyhow if I were to sign up for the public school at home program it shouldn't be a problem to withdraw if we didn't like it.

No he hasn't taken the placement test. I'm scheduled to listen to the Verticy information meeting tomorrow night. Hopefully I can gain more info on the program and ask a few questions. I'm hoping to have him take the placement test later in the week. We also homeschool year round but if I decide to go under the public school we would have to complete the program in 180 days.

I'm thinking really hard about my 10yr old curriculum for next school year. I've eyed the Verticy program for a few months but I just don't have the money to try it. I found out last week that our local virtual public school is offering the Calvert and the Verticy program for "free". Yes I'm very aware that it's not really "free". I will have to register my son as a Public School student and he would also need to take the State mandated FCAT test at the end of the year. I'm really trying to weight my options here as I would really like to try the program. I don't know how I feel about the possibility of having the public school as an overhead. I've read so many negative comments when it comes to the public schools awareness and dealing with dyslexic kids. I had a chance to speak with the virtual school guidance counselor . She was very kind and seemed to be knowledgable on the phone. She informed me that we will still have flexibility in our schedule and we would also have access to Verticy Advisory Teacher. What resources are you using at home with the child who has Auditory Processing issues?

Trying to sort through a few things concerning my 10 yr old son. He recieved an assessment a few days ago which was performed by a SLP. I won't have the report in my hand until Monday. She did speak with my after the test. The biggest area of weakness was in the auditory processing area. She did state she has worked with other kids my sons age who showed similiar weakness and saw good results. She would probably only have to work with him for 3 months or so but she didn't make any promises. She was confident in knowing she could help him. My son was also tested a few weeks ago by a pedatirc ENT specialist and I was told his hearing was good? I guess right now I'm looking for resources to read until I at least get the results and recommendations in hand.

Does anyone know if Marie's Words app actually speak and pronounce the word to the child?

Youngest DS currently grade 3 Phonics- Hooked on Phonics, Master Reader, ETC bks 1-8, Bob Books, Early Chapter Books, Pathway Readers, Sonlight List. Handwriting- Zaner Bloser Books, Copywork WWE 1&2 Grammar- FLL 1&2, The Sentence Family(3rd grade), Mad Libs, School House Rock, Cleary books. Spelling-AAS 1 &2 ( moving into 3)

Overall I have somewhat of a good feeling about it. I get good vibes from the owner. She's very passionate about education and has years of experience as an educator. As a matter of fact her son and another board member son attend a very prestigious elementary school here and the both plan to pull them out and have them attend the Core Knowledge school.

I was able to attend a parents info meeting a few nights ago and this is what I have so far. For math they are trying to decide between Saxon or Singapore. Reading Mastery will be used for LA. History, Geography, Visual Arts, Music, and Science will follow the Core knowledge Sequence. On Friday, the core of the curriculum will be “Learn By Doing.†Students will be actively engaged in relevant, authentic experiences that reinforce academic lessons. When students can take concepts and skills learned in classroom instruction and apply them to life situations, they gain much needed connections between learning and the real world. Scholar will take advantage of corporate and community partnerships that bring real-world connections to the classroom. Once in middle school students will begin having a 6 period day. Four of these six periods will be dedicated to the focused study of English, math, science, and social studies. The fifth period will provide students with a special of foreign language, art, or music. The sixth period will provide students will the opportunity to be introduced to additional STEM curriculum.

There's a Core Knowledge Charter school opening in my area next fall. Trying to find out if anyone has any experience with the curriculum or school itself.
