  1. This was our first year homeschooling and my son is older, but we did something similar to what Merry did (but not as well thought out). I gave him three questions: What did you learn this year? What do you want to learn next year? and What do you want to learn before you graduate high school? I like Merry's list better. :001_smile:
  2. How about Pretty in Pink or Sixteen Candles? My 14 year old nieces just discovered them and can't stop talking about them.
  3. I pulled my oldest out last fall because things weren't going well. He had just started middle school and bullying was the main issue. I'm pulling my other three out after this year and things have been going alright. DS11 and DS9 are doing great but aren't really being challenged. DS8 is struggling with some things and was just diagnosed with dyslexia, but all three are doing great socially and have lots of friends.
  4. Regular clothes. My son sleeps in his boxers, so throws jeans or sweatpants on before he comes downstairs.
  5. On a Friday night, that wouldn't be out of the ordinary for our neighborhood. Most of the 8-12 crowd on our street plays "spotlight" when it starts to get dark and goes home around 9:30/10:00.
  6. Just quizzed my 11 and 9yos. 11yo got it right away and 9yo got it with the hint "You can draw lines in it" from his brother. They use Everyday Mathematics at their public school. I wouldn't be worried if they couldn't remember how to do it a year from now.
  7. I homeschooled my oldest for the first time this year and I'm starting with the others in the fall, so I'm in the same situation. I've been looking at all the samples I can find, showing them to the boys and asking for their input and doing placement tests. Sorry, I don't have any advice about WWE or FLL, but I'm sure lots of people on here have switched into the higher levels and can give advice about placement.
  8. My 11 year old discovered Salinger's Nine Stories in our basement a few weeks ago and "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" is his favorite. :)
  9. We have two racks that are very similar to this in the storage area of our basement for jackets and ski pants. Boots, hats, gloves etc. are in plastic containers.
  10. I put make-up on at some point almost every day, but if I'm going somewhere in the morning or early afternoon and haven't put it on yet, it doesn't bother me. I know I look a little younger and more put together with a little foundation, bronzer, eyeliner and mascara on, but it's not a big deal.
  11. Every second day in the summer and maybe once a week in the winter. I wear dresses, skirts and shorts when I can.
  12. We all love Catcher in the Rye here. :001_smile:
  13. :iagree: My 13 and 11 year olds are both fine home alone (or together, or watching the 8 and 9 year olds) for more than four hours. I try not to leave them in charge of my 4 year old for that length of time, but my oldest has done it a few times.
  14. 501+ for each of the older four. Between dance, cheerleading, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, baseball, tennis, swimming and piano, it adds up pretty quickly.
  15. My kids have never been really into toys. They go through phases of loving lego or video games or board games, but they really prefer to play sports, rollerblade, ride bikes, swim, wrestle, dance, play music, make movies and read.
  16. I haven't used these, but they look great! I was hoping to find something to use as a mini-literature program for my 4th grader next year. :)
  17. My two oldest boys and I have iPhones and we all love them. Dh is happy with his Samsug Galaxy, but I think it's a little awkward and not nearly as intuitive as the iPhone.
  18. My 4yo was diagnosed with autism just before his second birthday and is doing great in preschool and ABA therapy. :)
  19. :iagree: Can she just continue with her tutor and take the AP French exam instead of going to the CC?
  20. I've never paid my kids to do that, but if I did, I'd pay ~$15 for the whole backyard. So, I'd estimate how many bags they'd fill, then divide $15 by that number (ie. 5 bags = $3/bag).
  21. My boys loved Holes and they've enjoyed everything else they've read from Sachar. A few other favourite authors are Gary Paulsen and Gordon Korman.
  22. My parents live in Siesta Key for 6 months of the year, so I know the area fairly well. When we visit, we rent a condo in their building, which is truly on the beach. I don't actually know of any hotels, but if you'd like a recommendation for a condo building, let me know. :)
  23. I asked the same thing in a different thread last week and I'm still curious about this. :bigear:
  24. Thanks for explaining that, MomatHWTK. :) I think something along those lines will work for History - having the older boys do extra reading and some writing assignments, but not making them do the activities I'll do with the younger ones. Thanks Ellie. :001_smile: That does seem to make the most sense, except I'm pretty sure my 11 year old could teach the Science I have picked out for the younger boys. :glare: I'll have a look around for something all three of them could use.
  25. The only one I can stomach is Arthur, so that's been everyone's favorite here. ;)
